ACID SPILL AT GUELPH CARGILL PLANT

GUELPH - Emergency crews responded to an acid spill at the Cargill Dunlop plant in Guelph on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for Cargill said there was a peracetic acid leak outside of the plant. She said the affected area was roped off immediately and there are no safety concerns outside of that area.
The plant shut down as soon as the spill occurred and emergency crews were called in, along with the Ministries of Labour and Environments.
Testing by the city and the Ministry of Environment found the spill didn't reach the river, the spokesperson said.
Three employees had to be treated at the site for eye irritation. One employee was taken to hospital "out of an abundance of caution" due to skin irritation.
Guelph police and fire both responded to the spill around 10 a.m. Tuesday. Police said they were mostly there to help with traffic control.
Cargill is now working to restart the plant.
Residents are asked to avoid the area, including trails at the former jail property, during the investigation.

TRAPPED WORKER RESCUED FROM CHEMICAL TANK IN SALT LAKE CITY

SALT LAKE CITY ‰?? An adult male was rescued from a chemical tank on Tuesday and then hospitalized in stable condition.
Salt Lake City Fire Captain Anthony Burton said they were called to a scene at 4285 West and 1385 South in the early afternoon.
Burton said that the worker was servicing a chemical tank and was following ‰??most of‰?? his company‰??s safety procedures, but ended up becoming trapped after losing consciousness.
Upon arrival, a HazMat team from Salt Lake City Fire checked the atmosphere in the tank. They were trying to determine the substance or substances that would have caused the worker to lose consciousness.
The chemical tank in question typically hauls methane, Burton told KSL. The tanks are purged with nitrogen.
But not knowing the substances can be a dangerous situation for the rescue workers, as well as for the victim, Burton said. The rescuer‰??s potential danger was increased by the confined space where the victim had been working.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. ‰??
A fire near Cinderella Castle sprouted from a tree around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, according to Reedy Creek fire officials.
Fire officials say the fire could have been caused by debris from the classic fireworks show set off at the castle.
The fire department said Cinderella Castle was evacuated, along with surrounding areas.
In a "very unusual occurrence," Walt Disney World staff escorted the first responder trucks down Main Street, said Reedy Creek Fire Association president Jon Shirey.
No one was hurt in the incident except for one person who accidentally inhaled the chemicals from a chemical fire extinguisher used by the fire department, Shirey said. That person was treated on the scene.
A representative from Walt Disney World described the fire as small. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, according to Disney.

NEDERLAND, Texas ‰?? Nederland residents are dissatisfied about how they were informed of a leak from a transport trailer that has left some with headaches, nausea and eye irritation.
Emergency response crews spent most of Monday monitoring and suppressing the chemical leak at Beauxart Garden Road near Highway 69. The incident was first reported on Sunday but began Saturday afternoon.
The leak has closed the road and surrounding neighborhoods are being closely monitored.
Officials released multiple statements saying the chemical released by the leaking trailer may linger in the air for several days. This has left Beauxart Garden residents concerned, as they have already been experiencing mild side effects.
The leaking product, known as Lubrizol 1389, is producing a low level of hydrogen sulfide gas, according to a City of Nederland press release. Lubrizol 1389 is a mineral oil blend used as a lubricant additive.

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) ‰?? An illegal family business was uncovered in Tulare County after the home it was operating out of exploded over the weekend, according to Sheriff‰??s office officials.
According to deputies, they were called to the home on the 16800 block of Claremont Street in Woodville shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses described fire and smoke coming from the inside of the home and several people were hurt. Investigators established that the explosion was caused by a Butane honey oil laboratory.
Around an hour later, Sheriff‰??s office officials were informed that two severely burned men were admitted to Kaweah Delta Hospital ‰?? and both admitted to deputies that they lived at the same home where the explosion took place. They were both later airlifted to the hospital.
According to Sheriff‰??s office officials, a search of the residence found evidence of a honey oil lab, as well as approximately 105 lbs. of processed marijuana, nine illegal guns, and several illegal firearm magazines. Investigators also say there was evidence of illegally manufacturing firearms without serial numbers, also known as ghost guns.

MINING COMPANY WILL PAY $1.6 MILLION IN GOLD KING MINE SPILL LAWSUIT

A Denver mining company will pay the state of Colorado $1.6 million in a settlement connected to the 2015 Gold King Mine spill, which infamously turned the Animas River a sickly hue of orange.
The settlement, announced Monday, resolves a lawsuit by the state against the Sunnyside Gold Corp. The company does not own the closed Gold King Mine near Silverton but did oversee the construction of barriers, known as bulkheads, below the mine.
A federal investigation found these bulkheads caused a build-up of water. When contractors with the Environmental Protection Agency accidentally triggered the spill, about three million gallons of toxic, stored water spilled into a tributary of the Animas River, fouling waterways not only in Colorado but also New Mexico, Utah and the Navajo Nation.
The water, laded with heavy metals, caused significant damage to farmers and to the Navajo Nation, in particular. The federal government had to deliver water to those affected, though not all those in need received help.
In the settlement with Sunnyside, whose parent company is based in Canada, the company does not admit fault. Sunnyside reached similar no-fault settlements with the state of New Mexico and the Navajo Nation earlier this year, for $11 million and $10 million, respectively.

THREE KILLED AFTER EXPLOSION AND FIRE AT YEOSU CHEMICAL FACTORY

Three workers were found dead following a chemical factory explosion and fire at an industrial complex in the southern city of Yeosu, Monday, according to firefighters.
The explosion and resultant fire occurred at 1:37 p.m. at a petrochemical manufacturing factory in the Yeosu Industrial Complex, 450 kilometers south of Seoul.
A total of seven people were working at a chemicals storage facility in the factory, and three of them were found dead in a nearby section, apparently due to the strong impact of the explosion.
The other four were confirmed safe, the firefighters said.
The emergency authorities issued a Level-2 warning, which enables them to call in support, including firefighters, from other areas.

Three people required medical attention after breathing in gas following a chemical spill at a freezing works in Mosgiel this morning.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokeswoman said they were called to the spill at the Duncan South facility, in Puddle Alley, about 10.25am.
Two fire appliances responded, one from Lookout Point and one from Mosgiel.
Two people had inhaled gas during the incident, she said.
St John later confirmed that three people were taken to hospital.
Some of the firefighters at the scene were wearing breathing apparatus.
The facility was about 100m from the road and close to AgResearch's Invermay campus.

US SENATE CONFIRMS CHEMICAL SAFETY BOARD NOMINEES

Two new members of the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) were confirmed by the Senate Dec. 9. Since April 2020, the five-member board had been hamstrung, operating with a single member.
The new members are Sylvia Johnson, an epidemiologist with labor union experience, and Stephen Owens, an attorney and former federal and Arizona state regulator who focused on environmental, safety, and health issues.
President Biden also nominated Jennifer Sass, a senior scientist and toxicologist with the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental nonprofit organization, to CSB. Sass faced criticism from Republican senators during her confirmation hearing in September. Her nomination was not brought up for consideration by the Senate with those of Johnson and Owens.
The three nominees have chemical science, human health, and regulatory expertise. However, they lack direct experience working for the chemical industry. Historically, CSB members often were former industry employees with engineering backgrounds. AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE UNEXPECTED CORROSION OF NICKEL ALLOY VESSELS WITH SELECTFLUOR

Selectfluor is one of the most widely used fluorinating agents in the pharmaceutical industry. These reactions are often scaled up in reactors made with corrosion-resistant metals such as Hastelloy because of the presence of fluoride in Selectfluor. Herein we report an investigation into the variable performance of a fluorination reaction in the belzutifan synthesis, which initially focused on the unexpected corrosiveness of the reaction toward the high-nickel alloys Hastelloy C-276 (N10276) and Hastelloy C-22 (N06022). This investigation identified that the corrosion, rather than being inherent to the reaction, was associated with the particular lot of Selectfluor used and could be correlated with elevated levels of chloride and iron in the lot of Selectfluor. Further investigation found that the increased aggressiveness was associated with the elevated chloride level (some chloride can be found in nearly all lots of Selectfluor), and the presence of metals does not impact !
the level of corrosion. A corrosion-reaction pathway involving the presence of an oxidized chloride species is proposed which accounts for both the poor reaction performance and the corrosion observed.
