BROOKFIELD ‰?? There has been a hazmat spill at the Candlewood Lake School Construction Site in town, according to a release. No one was placed at risk from the spill, the town said.
On Friday afternoon, Dec. 10, Brookfield leadership was informed of a hydraulic fluid spill caused by a burst hose from a concrete pump truck on the site of the new school project, which led to a leak of an estimated 5 to 15 gallons of hydraulic fluid located to the far northwest corner of the property, at the new Candlewood Lake Elementary School construction site on the Huckleberry Hill School property, according to a report on the town‰??s website Sunday evening.
At no time were students, staff or neighbors placed at risk from the spill, the report said.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) ‰?? A preliminary investigation has pointed to six errors that may have contributed to the COVID-19 infection of a scientist at a P3 (Biosafety Level-3) facility in Taiwan, the first case of its kind.
A former worker at Academia Sinica‰??s Genomics Research Center (GRC) in Taipei was confirmed to have contracted the Delta variant last week, sparking public fear after more than a month of zero local cases and raising concerns about safety practices in one of the country‰??s most advanced scientific research centers.
James Liao (ŒÈ?ŠÀ?¾?¼), president of Academia Sinica, said in a legislative briefing on Monday (Dec. 13) that workplace negligence in six aspects was responsible for the incident, per the Liberty Times.
These include failure to duly report a scientist being bitten by lab mice; not working with lab mice in a biosafety cabinet; not following protocols in removing hazmat suits; new personnel not receiving adequate training; lack of supervision and monitoring during experiments; and lax management in lab practices.

JEFFERSON COUNTY ‰?? Several fire departments have responded to a reported chemical leak at a tank wash business on Beauxart Gardens Road off Highway 69.
Nederland Fire, with assistance from the Port Neches Fire Department and Groves Fire Department, are on scene and have blocked roads around the area while they respond.
Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter and firefighters with Nederland Fire Rescue say there are no evacuations. Nederland Fire says they‰??ve been on scene since yesterday. Residents told us the odor is strong and that it‰??s irritating, Firefighters say they‰??re monitoring the situation and spraying water to help minimize the impact of the leak.

An 11-year-old girl has died and several other people have fallen ill after apparent pest control chemicals were found at a block of flats in east London.
Paramedics called in police on Saturday afternoon after reports of a girl unresponsive in a flat in Shadwell. She was taken to hospital and died a short time later.
Other residents in the building reported feeling unwell and three people were taken to hospital, where they remained on Sunday, the Met said.
It said the girl‰??s death was being treated as unexplained and a postmortem examination would be carried out.
London fire brigade said it was called to the scene just after 7pm and discovered a number of chemicals believed to be used in pest control.

If there is, she brings the washing in and closes the windows and doors to stop the smell of burning rubbish getting inside her house.
"We don't go outside, we close all the windows, put all the deodorisers on," she said.
Nicole Power lives about 350 metres from the Kealba Landfill, on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne's west.
It is a built-up area, with lots of young families. They say the tip was not much of a problem until the spotfires developed underground more than two years ago.
"It varies between the smell of living in the back of a cattle truck, to a chemical-based burning odour," Ms Power said.
The fire has been burning since November 2019, and is not expected to be put out until May 2022.

One worker has died and a further five seriously injured at ChemPark in Dormagen, Germany on 9 December. The park‰??s operator, Currenta, reported that the serious incident involved sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) being used for cleaning work.
Three employees of one of the park‰??s resident companies and three rescue workers were involved in the incident. One of the employees died from their injuries at the scene. The cause of the incident is unknown.
Currenta operates three ChemPark sites ‰?? in Dormagen, Krefeld-Uerdingen and Leverkusen. In July of this year, a solvent tank explosion and fire in a waste disposal area of the Leverkusen site killed seven people and injured a further 31.

The owner of a chemical factory died and 13 others were hospitalised following liquid chlorine gas leakage near Chithode in Tamil Nadu‰??s Erode district on Saturday, December 11. According to the police, Damodharan, the owner of Sridhar Chemicals, was attending to a blockage in the chlorine gas pipe on Saturday afternoon, when the gas reportedly leaked from the pipe.
Damodharan (40) died on the spot after inhaling the poisonous gas, police sources said. As over 13 others working at the factory too breathed in the poisonous gas and faced breathing difficulties, they were rushed to the Thanthai Periyar Government Headquarters Hospital in Erode.
Four fire and rescue service vehicles were deployed to rescue the workers from the factory. The team also worked swiftly in controlling the leak before it spread.

GOODS TRAIN BOGIE CARRYING CHEMICAL CATCHES FIRE NEAR KHANPUR STATION

RAHIM YAR KHAN: A bogie of a freight train caught fire near Khanpur railway station, some 45 kilometres from here, while it was travelling from Karachi to Lahore on Saturday morning.
Due to the fire, rail traffic remained suspended on the down track for an hour.
According to railway sources, the 105-Up ZBC Super Parcel goods train was en route to Badami Bagh, Lahore from Karachi loaded with chemical bags and drums. When it was crossing Khanpur around 9am, railways staff saw smoke in one of its wagons. They stopped the train away from the platform and called Rescue 1122 service that took time to arrive. Resultantly, the chemical in the bogie was damaged.
Khanpur Station Master Muhammad Arbi told Dawn the train was stopped and the affected wagon isolated because of a populated area nearby. Immediate and vigilant action by railways staff saved the train from any major loss, he claimed.
Sources said the freight trains transported highly inflammable and dangerous chemicals without following safety protocols that could endanger human life. Besides, there were no proper arrangements to tackle any problem in case of emergency during a journey, they added.

n a letter to the Chemical Industries Association, Environment Secretary George Eustice, 50, revealed that the UK may postpone changes to the country‰??s chemical safety rules.
The letter comes after the chemical industry in the United Kingdom demanded that the government reconsider its plans to create a safety database, which could cost businesses up to å£1 billion.
Brexit Britain ‰??is committed to an effective regulatory system for chemicals that properly protects both human health and our environment,‰?? the Camborne andamp; Redruth MP wrote on December 6.
‰??It will take time to fully investigate an alternative registration model and, if we want to go ahead with it, to develop and pass the necessary legislation,‰?? Mr Eustice added.
‰??To allow time for this work, we intend to consult separately on extending the deadlines for the full registration data.‰??
‰??We are considering extending the deadline from October 27, 2023 to October 27, 2025, subject to that consultation.‰??
Companies had only until October 28 this year to provide basic chemical substance regulations to the new UK Reach database.

A "potentially hazardous" chemical spill in an academic building on LSU's campus Friday was determined to be acetone, the Baton Rouge Fire Department said.
An emergency crew responded to a call about a spill on the second floor of the school's Life Sciences center shortly before noon, according to BRFD spokesman Justin Hill.
Hill said the crew determined the mysterious liquid to be a gallon of acetone that had "mostly evaporated" by the time they arrived.
The area was evacuated so the hazmat team could ventilate the building.
Though exposure to acetone over a short period of time can be toxic, Hill said there was no immediate safety threat.

Researchers at Hokkaido University, Japan, have discovered a new method to prepare Grignard reagents using mechanochemistry ‰?? and what‰??s more these reagents aren‰??t destroyed by air. ‰??It‰??s easier and faster,‰?? says Deborah Crawford from the University of Bradford, UK, who was not involved in the study. ‰??I would now employ [this] method if I was to need a Grignard.‰??
Grignard reagents are organomagnesium compounds widely used in organic synthesis for their versatility to create new carbon‰??carbon bonds. However, their preparation often requires controlled temperatures, dry solvents and protection from air and moisture through inert-air methodologies like Schlenk lines. ‰??This is the first example of Grignards [being] prepared under ambient conditions ‰?| it‰??s remarkable,‰?? says Crawford.
The Japanese team‰??s secret weapon was mechanochemistry ‰?? grinding reagents together using a ball mill. While other researchers had studied the reactivity of organohalides and magnesium in these conditions, this team took it a step further. ‰??We found that [adding] small amounts of [tetrahydrofuran] efficiently promoted the formation of Grignard reagents,‰?? explains Koji Kubota, who co-led the study. ‰??The set-up is really simple: a stainless-steel ball, an organic halide, magnesium and THF [all] added into the milling jar. Then you just press start.‰??
