EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso firefighters initiated a triage and hazmat response after a plane made an emergency landing Thursday evening at El Paso International Airport with numerous passengers reported to be nauseous after being overcome by unknown fumes.

The Frontier Airlines flight, containing over 200 passengers, landed about 7:30 p.m. and went to gate B-10. An ABC-7 crew at the scene observed several passengers taken off the plane by stretchers and loaded into ambulances; in all, six people were being treated for possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

The flight originated in Las Vegas and was headed to San Antonio after being delayed 30 minutes for a leaky fuel line to be fixed, according to passengers. Those passengers told ABC-7 that they smelled strong chemical fumes midway through the flight, which prompted the emergency landing in El Paso.

"When they opened the window of the plane, there was just, you could see all the ambulances -- yeah, dozens of ambulances, fire department and everything. Scared us to death. And then they told us, this is a quote, 'if anyone else feels nauseous, sick to your stomach, please come to the front of the plane. Everyone else remain seated,'" passenger Dee Hart told ABC-7.

A man on probation for a chemical vandalism spree in Marin has been arrested in connection with a toxic incident in Terra Linda, police said Wednesday.

Shahin Farman, 39, of San Rafael was identified through video surveillance footage and eyewitness reports, police Lt. Dan Fink said.

The alleged crime happened Tuesday morning to the Northgate One shopping center off Manuel T. Freitas Parkway and Northgate Drive. A witness said a man poured a liquid out of a jug into a planter box, and the liquid emitted haze, Fink said.

Police closed part of the shopping center, and one person received treatment for chest pain, Fink said. The county‰??s hazardous materials crew disposed of the chemicals.

Police arrested Farman at about 3 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment on Nova Albion Way near the shopping center. He was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of vandalism and disposing hazardous waste.

Farman is on probation for a set of similar crimes last year. On Aug. 2, he was recorded on surveillance footage pouring acid into the gas tanks of trucks at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank center on Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael.

Tags: us_ME, public, discovery, environmental, other_chemical

On November 23, Maine‰??s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW), in conjunction with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, issued a ‰??Do Not Eat‰?? advisory for deer taken in parts of a six-county region surrounding Fairfield, Maine. The announcement comes after high levels of PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) were found in several deer collected in the area.

According to the MDIFW, PFOS is part of the group of human-made chemicals called Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), which are used in industrial applications and consumer products such as carpeting, waterproof clothing, upholstery, food wrappings, personal care products, fire-fighting foams, and metal plating. The chemicals are widely used and extremely long-lasting. The Maine advisory notes that high levels of PFOS have been found in some farm fields in Fairfield, as well as in the well water and surface water near or on those fields.

STUDY ON AUTOCATALYTIC DECOMPOSITION OF DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE (DMSO) III: INVESTIGATIONS REGARDING THE MAIN DECOMPOSITION

Tags: Japan, laboratory, discovery, environmental, other_chemical

It is important to know the entire decomposition mechanism of energetic materials for safety purposes, such as the assessment, control, mitigation, and prevention of thermal hazards. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a common solvent that is widely used in laboratories and industrial applications; however, several severe incidents due to its decomposition have been reported. The decomposition mechanism of DMSO has been studied for several years; however, it has not been sufficiently clear until now. To elucidate the complicated decomposition pathway, analyses of materials from DMSO decomposition were conducted. Several new chemical bonds were found in the decomposition products through gas chromatography‰??mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, which suggests a radical reaction. Atomic sulfur S(0) or organic divalent sulfur S(II) was found on the inner wall of the vessel after decomposition, which indicates that the sulfur atom in DMSO was reduced during decomposition. In addition t!
o the chemical analyses, a kinetic study was carried out for the data obtained through isothermal heating tests. All of the DMSO samples with or without the studied impurities showed similar activation energies for the main decomposition. Autocatalysts in DMSO decomposition are proposed to work not by accelerating the main decomposition but rather by shortening the induction period. It is proposed that the main decomposition of DMSO occurs via a radical pathway.

REPORT DISSECTS US RESPONSIBILITY FOR PLASTIC WASTE IN OCEANS

Tags: public, discovery, environmental, other_chemical

The US plays an oversized global role in contributing plastic waste to the oceans, a National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine committee says in a report released Dec. 1. The US is the world‰??s largest generator of plastic waste by mass and per capita, the report finds. Plastics recycling can be complicated because items are made from many combinations of resins and additives and sometimes include layers of various materials, the report says. Consequently, with the price of raw materials kept artificially low by fossil fuel subsidies, virgin plastics are more profitable for companies to produce than recycled products, the committee finds. The report also critiques plans of many manufacturers to turn to chemical recycling‰??breaking plastics into component molecules and reusing them as feedstock‰??as a way to reduce waste. ‰??Such processes remain unproved to handle the current plastic waste stream and existing high production plastics,‰?? the report says. It !
emphasizes the need for a US policy to reduce plastic waste in the environment, a goal that US plastics makers fully agree with, Joshua Baca, vice president of plastics at the industry group American Chemistry Council, says in an emailed statement.

BURNS HARBOR, Ind. (WLS) -- A massive explosion at a steel mill rocked the and the surrounding community in Northwest Indiana Tuesday afternoon.

Residents and business owners said the explosion shook their homes and shops at around noon.

Cleveland-Cliffs spokeswoman Patricia Persico said the blast took place in a slag pit at the mill along the Lake Michigan lakeshore in Porter County. The mill itself was not involved. Steel slag is a molten liquid byproduct of the steelmaking process, and it is taken to pits where it solidifies as it cools.

William Arney is the fire chief in Burns Harbor, a town of 1,200 surrounding the big former ArcelorMittal plant, Cleveland Cliffs bought it last December. It sits adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park.

"I was sitting in my office and felt the building shake, went outside, saw the plume of smoke, immediately started to head that way," said Arney.

HAVERHILL, MA ‰?? Two people were injured in Haverhill Tuesday after an accident at an electronic parts sourcing company, the Haverhill Fire Department reported.

At the Fusion Worldwide plant in Haverhill, a small glass bottle of cleaning solution material was mixed by a cleaning crew, then pressurized and broke, Haverhill Fire Chief Robert O'Brien told Patch. The spilled material let out potentially toxic chemicals, and one worker got glass in his eye while another got burned on his hands, O'Brien said.

Both workers were transported to Lawrence General Hospital by Trinity EMS, Haverhill Fire reported on Facebook. The building was evacuated as fire, police, and state hazmat teams investigated. As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, the building is still evacuated, O'Brien said. Though the Facebook post describe the incident as a "mass casualty event," O'Brien said that it was not.

Just after noon Tuesday, HFD reported on Facebook that the chemical appears to be contained.

Investigators have concluded that malfunctioning equipment caused an April explosion and fire at the Yenkin-Majestic Paint and OPC Polymers Corp. factory on the Near East Side that left one man dead, injured several others and caused more than $1 million in property damage.

The official determination of the cause of the April 8 blast and fire, which heavily damaged the facility in the 1900 lock of Leonard Avenue, was reached by the Columbus Division of Fire, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Health Investigation Board and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

‰??The investigation shows the explosion and resulting fire was accidental‰?|,‰?? according to a press release from the Columbus Division of Fire. ‰??In this instance, there is no evidence of any criminal or intentional act.‰??

Specifically, investigators determined an agitator that mixed products in a 3,000 gallon kettle stopped working, causing a chemical reaction that eventually released a highly flammable gas inside the factory. The fumes then ignited, resulting in the massive explosion that could be seen miles away and fire.
