Laboratory equipment and other property were gutted after a massive fire broke out in the chemistry lab of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research‰??s (CSIR) Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, in the wee hours of Sunday. However, no loss of life has been reported in the incident.
The fire department rushed two fire engines from Palampur to the IBHT campus. However, given the severity of the situation, a third fire engine was summoned from Baijanth.
It took firefighters 3-4 hours to douse the flames. Palampur deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Gurbachan Singh said the police was informed about the fire incident after midnight.
He said a watchman noticed the fire and informed the IHBT authorities who then called the fire department and the police.
A police team and firefighters rushed to the spot immediately, said Singh. He said prima facie short-circuit was said to be the reason behind the fire.
However, the exact reason will be known after a thorough investigation, said the DSP. He said the loss is being estimated and it may run into crores. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the IHBT authorities are likely to constitute a committee for an internal investigation into the incident.

Lansing ‰?? Michigan has disposed of more than 50,000 gallons of potentially harmful firefighting foam since 2019.
Firefighters and environmental advocates say that isn‰??t enough.
The foam targeted for removal contains PFAS, an abbreviation for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of manufactured chemicals used since the 1950s, but that scientists now link to harmful effects on people and the environment. Because of this, Michigan is working to limit their use.
Exposure to modern fires means higher cancer risks, said Rep. Jeff Yaroch, R-Richmond. Consistent exposure to PFAS foam increases that risk.
‰??When I was a firefighter, we weren‰??t aware this foam was that bad for us,‰?? Yaroch said. ‰??Now that we know, we need to take action.‰??

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX ‰?? Around 10:00 p.m. Saturday, the Corpus Christi Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a structure fire at Repcon Inc., a chemical plant and refinery construction company, in the 7500 block of Up River Road.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire and smoke. Units from the CCFD and Annaville Fire Department responded to a second alarm to provide additional resources.
Crews engaged in a defensive fire mode and used elevated water streams to attack the blaze. Water pressure was increased in the area due to the large volume needed to fight the flames.
Firefighters were able to limit the damage to one large-building and maintenance shop.
‰??Firefighters were faced with heavy fire and smoke conditions when arriving on scene,‰?? Fire Chief Robert Rocha said. ‰??They were able to suppress the fire with no injuries.‰??

Real-world safety case studies provide concrete examples of episodes that can be both instructive and memorable for students. We describe here a framework for teaching safety case studies using the RAMP risk management approach. Structured templates guide students to Recognize the hazards present, Assess the associated risks, and consider what risk Minimization and Preparation for emergencies steps were appropriate. The student is then guided to consider what RAMP steps were, or might have been, inadequately addressed. The process culminates with a root cause analysis that examines probable causes of the incident. This guided inquiry framework allows students to gain an understanding of risk management and reiforces the importance of the decision-making process for safety. The Supporting Information for this paper includes the templates, student instruction for the four parts of the process, an instructor‰??s guide, three examples of the process, and other resource material.

At the beginning of World War I, the couple dozen students attending American University suddenly found themselves shunted off campus, their classes held at professors‰?? houses, while more than 1,000 chemists and engineers flocked to what was then rural acreage in a sparsely developed corner of the District. Their mission: to develop and test deadly chemical weapons, including mustard gas.
Now, the most contaminated site from that era has been cleaned up, after two decades of work by the Army Corps of Engineers. The site, at 4825 Glenbrook Rd., NW, was one of the locations where chemicals and debris were dumped when the labs were dismantled after the war.
Amidst multi-million-dollar mansions on a leafy street in Spring Valley, the Army Corps set up a massive barn-like structure, 80 ft. long by 60 ft. wide, to prevent chemical agents from escaping while crews wearing full hazmat suits and oxygen tanks excavated the site by hand. At this one property, workers unearthed 556 ‰??munition items,‰?? 23 of which were filled with chemical agent, as well as 53 sealed glass containers of chemical agent. They also found and disposed of 2,139 pounds of laboratory debris and 7,500 tons of contaminated soil.
Six different chemical agents used only in warfare were unearthed at the Glenbrook Rd. property, including white phosphorous, arsenic trichloride, and magnesium arsenide. Arsine, a deadly gas, was found weaponized in 75 mm projectiles.

AN OPTIMIZED SAFE PROCESS FROM BENCH TO PILOT CGMP PRODUCTION OF API EPTIFIBATIDE USING A MULTIGRAM-SCALE MICROWAVE-ASSISTED SOLID-PHASE PEPTIDE SYNTHESIZER
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.oprd.1c00368

A growing industrial interest toward the peptide drug market fueled the need for the development of effective and cGMP compliant manufacturing methods for these complex molecules. Solid-phase strategies are considered methods of election for medium-length peptide syntheses not only on the research scale but for multigram-scale production, as well. The possibility to use microwave-assisted technology on the multigram scale, recently introduced, prompted us to evaluate the possibility to conveniently set up a safe and fully cGMP-compliant pilot process to produce eptifibatide, a generic peptide active pharmaceutical ingredient. Accordingly, we developed an optimized process on the laboratory scale (1‰??5 mmol), which was subsequently successfully scaled up to 70 mmol, obtaining all the information required by regulatory agencies to validate the process and qualify the pilot scale plant. The process consists of 5 steps: (1) automated microwave-assisted solid-phase synthesis of !
eptifibatide linear precursor; (2) cleavage from the resin with concomitant amino acid side-chains deprotection; (3) disulfide-bond formation in solution; (4) purification by flash column chromatography; (5) ion-exchange solid-phase extraction. Since the direct scale-up of a multigram-scale cGMP compliant peptide API production procedure is a challenge that requires an accurate understanding of each involved step, we initially performed a quality management risk assessment, which enabled a smooth and effective achievement of a successful final result.
