Emergency services swarmed into the street by Top Nails in Brislington, Bristol, where officials could be seen wearing hazmat suits. WASHINGTON ‰?? The FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating ‰??questionable vials‰?? labeled "smallpox" and found in a freezer last night at a Merck facility outside Philadelphia, according to an alert sent to Department of Homeland Security leadership on Tuesday night.

There were reportedly a total of 15 questionable vials, according to the unclassified "For Official Use Only" alert, a copy of which was obtained by Yahoo News. Five of the vials were labeled as ‰??smallpox‰?? and 10 were labeled as ‰??vaccinia." The vials were secured immediately.

The discovery of the vials prompted a lockdown of the facility, which has since been lifted. The FBI and CDC launched investigations, which remain ongoing.

Smallpox, a disease caused by the variola virus, is considered so deadly that only two labs in the world are authorized to store samples of the virus, including one in Russia and the other at the CDC in Atlanta.

‰??The noise from the explosion was very scary,‰?? the resident says.

‰??The sound of the chemicals exploding was loud enough for neighbouring property owners to come out to see what was happening.

‰??Several people, including two children, had to be hosed down by one of the several fire crews which attended the event.

Virudhunagar: After 10 hours of struggle, officials on Tuesday evening recovered the bodies of two woman employees from the debris of a cardboard tubes manufacturing unit building which collapsed following an explosion in Sivakasi on Monday. The unit was allegedly manufacturing crackers illegally.
The charred bodies were identified as those of Hameedha, 55, and Kartheeswari, 33. Though it was suspected that owner Ramanathan and his wife Panchavarnam were also trapped under the building, no other bodies were found. The two-storeyed building had completely collapsed under the impact of the blast on Monday. Two people who sustained 60% and 30% burn injuries respectively were rushed to the Sivakasi government hospital.
Official sources said fire and rescue services personnel from Sivakasi were carrying out the work of removing debris to ascertain if any others are trapped. Since chemicals required for cracker manufacture were stored inside the building, officials stopped the work. Virudhunagar district collector J Meghanath Reddy inspected the spot and monitored the rescue operation.

In the wake of Brexit, the UK formed a Scientific Advisory Group on Chemical Safety in Consumer Products (SAG-CS) and established its own REACH regulation ‰?? both of which need to be understood and navigated by industry carefully, says the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) chief.
Commissioned by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), SAG-CS had been formed earlier this year‰?? to monitor chemical safety of products on the UK market; mirroring the work previously conducted by the European Commission‰??s Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety (SCCS) when the UK formed part of the EU. The mission of SAG-CS was ‰??to provide OPSS with scientific advice and risk assessment in the areas of public health and consumer safety‰??‰?? across three categories: cosmetic products and cosmetic ingredients; toys; and textiles.

So, were there any cosmetic chemicals up for discussion in the first year of SAG-CS? And should cosmetic manufacturers be concerned about any specific ingredients?

‰??Its main focus is toys‰?? for now, but processes must be clarified‰??

Dr. Emma Meredith, director-general of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), said that, for now, nothing on cosmetics or cosmetic ingredients had been raised.

Addressing attendees at SCS Formulate 2021‰??s first day of ‰??inform‰?? sessions in Coventry, UK, Meredith said: ‰??Currently, it‰??s not looking at cosmetic ingredients; its main focus is toys.‰??‰??

At the University of Innsbruck, Austria, a routine experiment in the Pharmacy department leaked diethyl ether from the reaction vessel into the room, resulting in an explosion. (9) While no one was injured, a lab worker in the room suffered shock due to the loud and unexpected nature of the event. Such was the power of the blast that walls were dented and, most notably, water pipes damaged. Together with activation of the sprinkler system, the pipe damage caused by the initial explosion led to extensive flooding throughout the few years-old university building. Indeed, emergency responders had to begin work to minimize equipment damage by suctioning floodwater 5 cm (nearly 2 in.) deep on the fourth floor. Damage extended all the way to the ground floor. Some 300 occupants of the building present at the time of the explosion were evacuated safely. The full extent of the financial damage caused remains to be seen.
