Emerson‰??s testing center was abruptly shuttered Tuesday afternoon after a fire forced the evacuation of the surrounding Tufts Medical Center complex, fire officials said.
Firefighters were sent to Tufts‰?? Biomedical Research and Public Health Building at 136 Harrison Ave. at 3:32 p.m. after an ‰??unknown haze‰?? was reported on the seventh floor of the building, the Boston Fire Department wrote on Twitter. Responders treated the event as a potential Level 2 hazmat situation, indicating the potential of ‰??irritating, corrosive or flammable vapors.‰??
Officials later determined that the haze was caused by a fire in a walk-in refrigerator.
No illnesses or injuries were immediately reported due to the fire, the department said.
Firefighters sealed the refrigerator and, after running tests on the air quality, confirmed that no dangerous chemicals were present, the department said. As of 4:53 p.m., a Hazmat specialist was awaiting an environmental cleanup crew at the scene.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Fire crews responded to a chemical spill at the Town Pump by the airport in Great Falls Monday around 10:30 p.m.

Gore Hill Fire Rescue Chief John Schmiedeke tells us a truck was carrying Thionyl Chloride, which is equivalent to rat poison.

Crews shut down part of Thirty-first Street SW and part of the gas station until 10:45 a.m.

Gore Hill Fire Rescue requested help from Great Falls Fire Rescue, Montana Air National Guard and more equipment from Helena.

Schmiedeke says there is no threat to the community at this time, and crews have cleaned up most of the toxic chemical and will continue cleanup the remainder of the Tuesday. According to Schmiedeke, the toxicity has cleared overnight.

CARLISLE, Iowa ‰?? 20 cars from a Union Pacific train derailed Friday evening about one mile east of Carlisle where the tracks cross the Middle River, according to Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Many of the cars contained either lumber, corn oil, corn syrup and polyethylene pellets. One car carrying pellets slid down the riverbank and leaked pellets into the river, the DNR said.
Hazmat teams were on site Saturday morning and set up a device around the cars trapping the pellets from floating downstream into the Des Moines River. Some pellets, however, made it the river. But the DNR has found no environmental impact.
A car carrying about 30,000 gallons of corn syrup leaked and soaked into the ground. The DNR said none of it has reached the river as of Monday afternoon, and clean-up will be challenging due to all the trees.

No injuries were reported after the Jefferson City Fire Department was called out Monday morning for a reported hazardous materials incident at Missouri Farm Bureau on South Country Club Drive.
According to JCFD reports, the call came in at 10:52 a.m. Crews arrived and found the building was being evacuated due to an odor inside.
Fire officials investigated and found a small bottle of pesticide spilled in the building and the smell made its way through the building, causing some employees to report their eyes were burning.
The fire department assisted with ventilation of the building as well as cleanup that was needed before employees were allowed back inside.

(WSIL) -- Sierra Club Illinois and the Prairie Rivers Network announced that they filed a Notice of Intent to sue Sugar Camp Energy LLC and American Consolidated Natural Resources for violations of the Clean Water Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

This announcement comes on the heels of a report that operators at the Sugar Camp Mine dumped 46,000 gallons of fire fighting foam, including at least 660 gallons of concentrated PFAS-based foam deep into the underground mine in an unsuccessful attempt to extinguish a fire that has been burning underground for the past two months.

Sierra Club Illinois and the Prairie Rivers Network‰??s notice states that samples collected by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency from nearby surface water locations found concentrations of PFAS higher than EPA health advisory levels, Illinois drinking water health advisory levels, and Illinois draft groundwater standards.

Sugar Camp‰??s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit does not authorize any discharges into the nearby watersheds, nor does it allow for the discharge of PFAS or other toxic substances found to be present in the nearby watersheds.

ORLANDO, Fla. ‰?? Could a fire that Channel 9 covered 15 years ago be responsible for a string of cancer cases among local firefighters?

A local attorney and his clients believe so, and they said their claims for compensation have been denied.

The families of at least four Orange County firefighters believe their cancer can be traced back to a 2006 fire.

So far, though, their attorney said line of duty death and medical benefits are tough to come by, and that is true for other fires, too.

Residents were evacuated and health officials issued a public health warning after a large fire erupted at a wastewater treatment plant in east Christchurch.

The blaze broke out at the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bromley just after 3pm on Monday, causing the collapse of the roofs of two buildings used for filtration and forcing the site‰??s evacuation.

Almost 50 firefighters battled the blaze, which sent a huge plume of black smoke across the city and caused an acrid stench for kilometres around, triggering health warnings.

Witnesses described hearing an explosion, and nearby residents described seeing ash and chunks of material falling into their yards, prompting the city council to confirm there was no asbestos at the site to allay fears.

For food research, control, and production, valid and trustworthy analytical data are important. Our practical chemical food safety course for engineers therefore uses real-life studies for the ease of understanding the concept and the needed requirements for high analytical quality in relation to enabling correct evaluation of chemical food safety. Concepts of chromatography and mass spectrometry were applied and left open for inquiry-based learning and students‰?? search for information for their actual case study during this 3 week practical course. Three case studies, with three different analytical chemistry challenges, were addressed, namely, iodine, ethyl carbamate, and N-nitrosamine determination by ICP-MS, GC‰??MS, and LC‰??MS/MS, respectively. Each group of students successfully concluded one case study by integration of method validation and other appropriate analytical quality concepts with practical conduction of the analysis. The assignment included obtaining t!
heir own results, and evaluation of the results in the context of a food safety assessment. Successful vocabulary attainment and learning of quality assurance, analytical concepts, and data evaluation were communicated in report writing as well as oral presentations in front of the other students (in groups) and at the final examination (individually).
