SENECA ‰?? Multiple hazardous materials teams were brought in Thursday morning after ‰??some chemicals were mixed‰?? at a home at The Pier, according to Oconee County Emergency Services director Scott Krein.
Krein said a resident of Clemson University‰??s off-campus housing mixed chemicals, ultimately ‰??creating a gas.‰??
Emergency officials from multiple agencies decontaminate a hazmat team near a house where officials say ‰??some chemicals were mixed‰?? Thursday morning at The Pier in Seneca.
Officials received a call about the incident around 8:40 a.m.
‰??We‰??re presently going in and trying to make sure we can contain that, so it doesn‰??t spread,‰?? Krein said. ‰??Situation is contained to just the home, and we‰??re working through that to make sure that cleanup and security of the area for the safety of the public is contained.

JENNINGS, Mo. ‰?? The Florissant Valley Fire Protection District is working with other departments to put out a fire at an abandoned commercial building. The Hazardous Materials team has been called to help with the situation.
Smoke is billowing from the structure and the fire is through the roof. The buildings are located on Xograph Avenue. The smoke from the fire is moving to the southeast from the fire in Jennings.
The Buzz Westfall Shopping Center is being evacuated as a precaution. St. Louis County Police recommend that people and businesses evacuate the area. If you are can‰??t leave then close your windows, turn off the air conditioning, and shelter in place.

Florissant Valley Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Mark Flautern says that the smoke is becoming a concern from the fire. There are 14 different fire departments working to put it out. They are using elevated ladders to work on it.
The building is an old bowling ball factory and there are a lot of residual chemicals at the location. Crews have responded within the last couple of weeks for hazardous materials calls.

Alameda and Contra Costa prosecutors recently joined 32 other district attorneys and city attorneys across California in reaching a settlement with Ulta Beauty, Inc., and its affiliates for alleged hazardous waste violations.

The statewide settlement, which includes $752,000 in civil penalties and other costs, stems from Ulta stores improperly storing, handling and disposing of hazardous and other regulated waste materials, as well as inadequate employee training, prosecutors said. All three Ulta stores in the Tri-Valley were involved in the case.
"Companies must be held responsible for business practices that pose a harm to the environment," Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton said in a statement Sept. 20. "Ulta was cooperative throughout the investigation and in correcting the issues."

CHEMICAL INHALATION INJURY AT WATERTOWN HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS

At approximately 12:26 today the Watertown Fire Rescue was called out to the Holiday Inn Express for a male with possible chemical inhalation injury in the pool area of the hotel.
Paramedics arrived on scene and transported one patient to Prairie Lakes Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Watertown Fire Rescue responded with a Battalion Chief and a fire engine with two Hazardous Materials Technicians.
Watertown Fire Rescue ventilated the affected area and ensured it was safe, monitored air quality, and all chemicals were in the proper storage containers upon clearing the scene.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Emergency crews responded to a chemical spill Wednesday morning.
The Charleston Fire Department says HazMat crews responded to liquid spilled from a vehicle on Promenade Vista Street just after 10 a.m.
Crews determined the spilled liquid was hydrochloric acid.
Officials say the area has been isolated and clean-up is underway.

The Canadian Coast Guard now says that more than 100 shipping containers, at least two of them carrying hazardous chemicals, fell off a cargo ship that later caught fire, and marine experts are concerned fish and even whales could suffer from chemical burning as a result of the accident.
Fire broke out aboard the 13-year-old MV Zim Kingston last weekend and officials initially estimated that two containers carrying a chemical used in mining were the source of the fire, while about 40 containers had gone overboard. But on Wednesday, the coast guard said the number of containers that fell from the vessel is now calculated at more than 100.
‰??Right now, our best count is 109. This is still an ongoing challenge, of course, and it could change because there‰??s a possibility that some were burned up in the fire that we‰??re not aware of yet,‰?? said Mariah McCooey, deputy federal incident commander with the coast guard.

Chemical scientists and engineers are interested in controlling chemical processes to attain specific goals, from synthesizing a desired substance to hindering a particular transformation. Nevertheless, students typically have few opportunities to develop the understandings and practices that are required to effectively engage in chemical control. In this study, we investigated similarities and differences among individuals with different levels of expertise in chemistry in the ways they think about how to control and act to control a chemical reaction. Our findings revealed that all types of study participants engage in the manipulation of similar control parameters but with different approaches and purposes. In particular, we observed a shift from a focus on physical to chemical factors, from experienced-based to model-based reasoning, from qualitative to quantitative methods, and from trial-and-error to guided investigation approaches in the thinking and acting of the mor!

US LAWMAKERS PROBE EPA NEW CHEMICALS EFFORTS

At an Oct. 27 hearing, lawmakers in the US House of Representatives scrutinized the Environmental Protection Agency‰??s program for reviewing new commercial chemicals before they enter the market. That program is facing allegations that its managers downplayed safety concerns to get chemicals onto the market quickly under pressure from the chemical industry.
The agency is taking steps to address the alleged problems in the new-chemicals program, Michal Freedhoff, the EPA assistant administrator for chemical safety and pollution prevention, told the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change. For one, Freedhoff has told the agency‰??s Office of Inspector General that her office will cooperate in an investigation into the process for new chemical reviews. Also, the staff of the new-chemicals office is undergoing scientific integrity training, she said, and the EPA is creating new procedures for elevating and resolving disagreements on scientific matters.
The new-chemicals program is severely understaffed, Freedhoff told lawmakers at the first House oversight hearing on the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) since Congress revised that law in 2016. ‰??We estimate that we have less than 50% of the resources that we need to review and approve new chemicals the way Congress intended us to.‰??

LARGE OIL SPILL IN NORTH EDMONTON SENDS CREWS WITH BOOMS INTO STORMWATER FACILITY

EDMONTON - Firefighters, HAZMAT teams and EPCOR crews were all working to contain a large oil spill in north Edmonton Wednesday afternoon.
A 911 call was made at 2:11 p.m., after about 1,000 litres of oil was spilled from a Jiffy Lube location at 164A Avenue and 45 Street..
A tanker truck that was taking old oil away from the shop overflowed and oil poured onto the ground, an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services official said.
The oil entered a drain and made its way toward a nearby stormwater pond.
‰??There is some evidence (of contamination) down in some of the sewer systems. EPCOR is actually digging out one of the closest manholes to see if it made it that far down," EFRS HAZMAT coordinator Duane Breit said.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) ‰?? Hazardous materials crews were called out to the University of Utah after reports of a spill at a building on campus.
Crews from the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to the Merrill Engineering Building Wednesday evening.
Multiple emergency vehicles were called out, including at least three fire trucks, an ambulance and other personnel.
After conducting a preliminary investigation, HAZMAT teams determined a very small amount of solid material was spilled.
People in the lab were able to clean and dispose of the material using pre-established protocols for similar situations.
Details about the kind of material that spilled were not immediately available.

irefighters and hazmat officials are investigating an "unknown irritant" in the air reported at a senior facility in Oceanside Wednesday night.
Oceanside Police Department Lt. McKean said the initial call was for a gas leak at the Oceanside Silvercrest Residence on Lake Boulevard, but when firefighters arrived at the scene, they found an "unknown irritant" in the air.
The San Diego County Hazardous Materials Division was called in to investigate.
Residents of the second floor of the facility were evacuated and other residents in the building are being sheltered in place, said Jake Minger, with the Salvation Army.

ACCIDENT EXPERIENCES AND REPORTING PRACTICES IN CANADIAN CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORIES: A PILOT INVESTIGATION

Accidents in chemistry and biochemistry laboratories are a regular occurrence and have been associated with injuries, property damage, and deaths. However, despite a high prevalence rate of accident involvement reported in previous investigations of academic lab personnel (approximately 30%), little is known about the context in which academic lab accidents occur. Previous findings also suggest a high degree of accident underreporting (25‰??40%), but again, little is known about this phenomenon. Pilot data was gathered from a convenience sample of 104 students and postdoctoral fellows in chemistry-related fields through an online survey. Results showed a high level of accident involvement (56.7%); of that number, most of those (65.9%) had been involved in multiple accidents. Most accidents involved only personal injuries and happened on a weekday afternoon with other lab members present. The majority of participants reported wearing multiple types of PPE at the time; however!
, adherence rates for any one type of equipment (e.g., goggles, gloves, coat) was less than 50%. Most (69.6%) reported their accidents to multiple individuals and were at least somewhat or very satisfied (81.2%) with their decision to report. Participants who chose not to report their accidents reported barriers such as beliefs that the accident was not severe, concerns about judgment, self-blame, and not knowing they had to report the accident or how. Implications for safety training and reporting practices are considered.

Emergency services are investigating a chemical incident at a recycling facility which saw one worker taken to Lismore Base Hospital.
Workers at North Coast Recycling at Northcott Crescent in Alstonville called Fire and Rescue NSW just after 12pm on Wednesday.
‰??A garbage truck that returned to its facility seems to have come back with a chemical that has aggravated the workers,‰?? a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
‰??The substance seems to be off-gassing but at this stage we are still investigating the cause.‰??
Fraser Hindry, station controller from the Fire and Rescue NSW Lismore station, said the unknown substance was controlled and identified by his team.

Hyderabad: Two workers were injured, allegedly when a reactor exploded in a chemical company, at the industrial area in Saregudem in Dundigal on Tuesday.
Sources said the mishap occurred when the workers, Mahesh (32) and Srinu (35), along with co-workers were working on the chemical reactor, wherein alkaline metals undergo chemical reactions. Other workers rushed to their rescue and shifted them to a private hospital in Balanagar. Their condition was said to be stable and they were under observation. The Dundigal police are investigating.

The fiery midnight crash of a tractor-trailer and the resulting cleanup halted or slowed down traffic through Auburn on Interstate 85 North throughout the morning and most of the day Tuesday.
Assistant Chief Mike Harris with the Auburn Police Division said late Tuesday afternoon that the remnants of the truck had been removed and that the Alabama Department of Environmental Management was still working on replacing dirt off the interstate that had been affected by chemicals being hauled on the truck.
The right northbound lane of I-85 was closed until around 5 p.m., slowing traffic for about 17 hours.

Los Angeles Fire Department hazmat crews were called to the intersection of Crenshaw and Jefferson boulevards just after 8 a.m. when ten plastic 55-gallon drums containing an unknown substance fell off a flatbed truck near an Arco gas station.
‰??It was loud and it seemed like the containers kept falling off,‰?? said Corey Yuguchi, a witness. ‰??You could hear them one at a time.‰??

WORKERS INJURED IN EDMONTON OIL TANK EXPLOSION

An explosion and fire broke out at a crude oil tank farm near Edmonton on Saturday.
There have been no reports of casualties but it is believed that several workers were injured by the explosion.
Emergency responders were attended the scene at SECURE Energy‰??s Elk Point facility near Edmonton around 2.35pm on Saturday, said local police in a statement.
Along with the RCMP and the EMS, 35 firefighters responded to the call.
‰??There were no fatalities. Some people were hurt from what I gather, but the extent of their injuries is unknown at this time,‰?? said Two Hills County Reeve Don Gulayec in a statement.
