Two people were transported to the hospital after an inhalation incident at Ascend Performance Materials in Cantonment Tuesday afternoon, according to Escambia County, but Ascend says there was no chemical leak.
No information was available on the condition of the individuals.
Davis Wood, spokesperson for Escambia Fire Rescue, said the two patients were exposed to cyclohexane. Cyclohexane can be harmful if swallowed or inhaled. It can cause eye iand skin irritation, respiratory symptoms, drowsiness, or coma in high enough concentrations, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Wood said there was no danger posed by the incident to anyone outside the plant. He said Escambia Fire Rescue was initially dispatched to the call on Chemstrand Road, but canceled because it could be handled by Ascend‰??s internal fire department. Escambia County EMS did transported the two individuals.

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Oct 5 (Reuters) - Ships in record numbers have jammed the port complex near this weekend‰??s oil spill in California, according to port data, as investigators look into whether a ship‰??s anchor could have hit a pipeline to cause the leak.

More than 3,000 barrels of oil leaked into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California over the weekend, killing wildlife, damaging sensitive environmental areas and closing beaches. Officials are investigating whether an anchor could have hit the pipeline, owned by Amplify Energy Corp of Houston.

An anchor strike is a plausible explanation, said two former Amplify employees who asked not to be named. They noted that anchor strikes have dented or scratched offshore pipelines before.

There were certainly more anchors in the area due to supply chain bottlenecks as consumer demand has rebounded from the depths of the pandemic. As of Tuesday morning, there were 63 container ships in San Pedro Bay waiting to unload at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, according to the Marine Exchange of Southern California. On Sept. 19, a COVID-era record 97 ships were backed up.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. ‰?? When Orange County Fire rescue veteran Erik Siena lost his five-month battle with brain cancer this past May, his wife Christy filed for the line-of-duty death benefit provided under Florida Senate Bill 426.
Christy, who served as a paramedic with the department for 16 years, never received out-of-pocket medical expenses, the $7,500 designated for funeral expenses or the $75,000 death benefit promised under the existing law.
The county twice denied claims for line-of-duty death, finding that the brain cancer was a ‰??personal medical condition,‰?? not a result of his job.
‰??It‰??s not fair,‰?? she told News 6. ‰??He always worried about exposure to one warehouse chemical fire.‰??
The 46-year-old firefighter was convinced exposure to hazardous chemicals at an Orlando warehouse chemical fire his unit responded to in April 2006 exposed his team to carcinogens that would eventually catch up to them.
Photographs of the scene obtained by News 6 showed barrels clearly marked hazardous material and toxic.
Christy recalled him telling her that the water turned green as they fought to bring the blaze under control and the protective gear ‰??fell apart‰?? as they packed it for cleaning after the fire.

UPDATE: ARRESTS MADE AFTER HAZMAT CALL ON HAUNGS AVENUE IN PEORIA

UPDATE 6:15 P.M. -- In a release, Peoria Police said officers were dispatched around 5:26 p.m. Monday to the 500 block of Haungs Avenue where officers noticed a strong smell of ammonia chemicals coming from a nearby alley.

Officers observed a man entering a camper parked in the back of the property where two people were inside. Officers noticed the smell was coming from the back of the camper as they approached.

Police blocked off the alley of Madison leading to Haungs, according to the release, and a perimeter was established around the home to prevent any injuries to the public if a chemical explosion occurred.

Officers noticed two men exit the back of the residence -- one man ran away when officers made contact but was subsequently caught and arrested for an active warrant.

Illinois State Police advised Peoria Police that there was a suspected meth lab on the property, but it is believed one of the suspect(s) that fled from the residence took the mobile lab with them.

In addition to Miller, Michael T. Lorance, 35, and Paul M. Salamon, 37 were also arrested -- Lorance for a Peoria County warrant and Salamon for a parole violation warrant.

Police located one gram of a substance that was later determined to be meth.

AMHERST, N.Y. ‰?? When the fire at Premium PPE broke out on July 20, Amherst fire inspector John Pidgeon told WGRZ that "we are monitoring with the DEC and state agencies to make sure no hazard come up."
2 On Your Side has learned through a Freedom Of Information Law request that air, soil, and water tests conducted on July 21, a little more than 14 hours after the fire started, determined nearly three dozen "pollutants of concern" were detected at the site.
According to the documents obtained by WGRZ, the testing was conducted by John Richter, Pretreatment Coordinator of the Environmental Control Division at the EPA/NYSDEC.
In an email to state and federal officials, Richter says cyanide and dioxane "may have entered both the Town of Amherst Sewer Lateral System and the Town of Amherst Storm Water Collection system."
According to a spreadsheet of all chemicals detected at the site of the fire, 1.23 mg/L of cyanide were discharged into the sewer system, "slightly above town standards," Richter said in that email to state and federal officials.

Officials said no more oil is leaking into the waters off Huntington Beach, but weather and ocean flows will be key as they try to contain the spill that has already spread down as far as Dana Point.

Officials with Amplify Energy, which operates the offshore oil rig believed to be the source of the leak, and with the U.S. Coast Guard said in response to a question they‰??re looking into a ship‰??s anchor striking and rupturing a pipeline as a possible cause of the spill of at least 126,000 gallons of oil.

‰??That is one of the distinct possibilities,‰?? Amplify CEO Martyn Willsher said Monday, Oct. 4.

Willsher said the company hasn‰??t yet pinpointed the origin of the spill, but its divers have inspected 8,000 feet of pipeline and found an ‰??area of interest.‰??

Asked whether one of the many cargo ships at anchor waiting to enter the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach could have caused damage to the pipeline, Willsher said it‰??s a possibility that is part of the ongoing investigation. Port officials deferred questions to the Coast Guard.

The Franklin Fire Department responded to a hazmat incident Monday morning at a local assisted living facility.

According to the FFD, two cleaning products that were mixed together by an employee at The Lantern at Morning Pointe at 1015 Generations Way resulted in the response. Firefighters were dispatched at 9:30 a.m. for a commercial fire alarm activation.

Franklin Fire Battalion Chief Joe Polenzani said the alarm was activated by a smoke detector in a resident‰??s room. Firefighters observed a haze in the room when they arrived, but upon investigation, determined it was caused by hazardous gas.

Polenzani said the hazardous gas was inadvertently created by an employee who mixed chlorine bleach and ammonia together in order to clean up fecal matter. Residents had already been evacuated to a safe area of the building due to the alarm when firefighters arrived.

BAL HARBOUR, Fla. ‰?? Three floors of a Bal Harbour high-rise condominium building were evacuated Monday afternoon after police saw suspected chemicals in a unit where a tenant had recently been evicted.
The 14th, 15th and 16th floors of the Majestic Towers Condo at 9601 Collins Avenue were evacuated, residents said, noting that they had received calls telling them to leave their homes.
Bal Harbour police confirmed that a tenant on the 15th floor was evicted last week. On Monday, the property manager went into the unit and called police after seeing something suspicious.
Bal Harbour police say they saw chemicals in a suspected lab of some sort and called Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Miami-Dade police‰??s bomb squad and narcotics detectives are assisting in the investigation.
Miami-Dade police referred to it as a ‰??narcotics scene‰?? in a news release.

Roanoke County couple whose home and farm was seriously damaged when a passing truck overturned and spilled embalming fluid on their land has settled a lawsuit against the driver and his employer.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed in a brief order dismissing the case filed Monday in Roanoke‰??s federal court.

On June 11, 2014, a tractor-trailer ran off the side of Jae Valley Road, a steep and winding road on Windy Gap Mountain that frequently causes trouble for oversized vehicles. The tanker split open from the impact, spilling about 4,400 gallons of embalming fluid it was carrying to a Roanoke chemical company.

The toxic fluid percolated into the soil of Christopher and Susan Sheldon‰??s farm, contaminating their well, damaging their crops and livestock and causing emotional and physical injuries, according to a multimillion-dollar lawsuit the Sheldons filed two years later.

An order signed by U.S. District Judge Thomas Cullen stated that the Sheldons had reached ‰??mutually agreeable terms‰?? with Nichols Transport Co., a South Carolina company that owned the truck and employed its driver.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it had urged U.S. airports to limit the use of firefighting foam with the chemical PFAS due to the environmental and public health risks as it evaluates possible alternatives.

PFAS, nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they do not break down easily, have been associated with various illnesses including kidney cancer. They have been used for decades in household products such as nonstick cookware, stain- and water-resistant textiles, rugs, food packaging, photo imaging, and in industrial products. Many states have already outlawed their use in food packaging.

The FAA said more than 400 research tests have been completed which evaluated 15 fluorine-free firefighting foam products. The FAA said it "expects a replacement product to be identified and eventually adopted."

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) - A second lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a worker injured in last week‰??s plant explosion at Westlake Chemical.

‰??Without any warning, there was an explosion,‰?? said Attorney Mo Aziz.

Aziz is representing two of the workers injured on the job.

‰??Both were rendered unconscious. One was recently released from the hospital but is still scheduled for some more surgeries, and Mr. Green is still in the burn unit at Lafayette,‰?? Aziz said.

Westlake operators issued what‰??s called a ‰??hot work permit‰?? which gave allowance to welders to do the job they had to do.

‰??These men should‰??ve never been issued hot work permits if it was not ensured by Westlake that the lines were clear, completely purged, and there was no flammable in the area,‰?? Aziz said.

Kurt Arnold, an attorney who filed one of the suits, currently represents 14 people claiming they were injured in the explosion.

‰??I mean I think it‰??ll be dozens before it‰??s all said and done. You have to remember that there are certain people that are burned, a person lost a leg, but ultimately, many many,‰?? Arnold said.
