TAMPA, FL ‰?? For the second day in a row, the Tampa Fire Rescue's hazardous incidents team has been called out to avert a catastrophe.
At 6:22 a.m. Tuesday, the team responded to a punctured buried gas line in the 3000 block of South Dale Mabry Highway.
The puncture was caused by a fence installation crew that unintentionally damaged the line.
The problem was remedied with no one sustaining any injuries.
On Tuesday, a gas leak at a Hyde Park business forced the evacuation of a shopping plaza.

UMBERTON ‰?? No one was injured, but the Lumberton Fire Department is sending off gear to be cleaned after firefighters dealt with a fire that caused a ‰??small-scale‰?? hazardous material release on Saturday, according to interim Fire Chief Chris West.
The fire department was dispatched about 1:03 a.m. Saturday to a fire at 2300 N. Cedar St. in Lumberton, West said. Crews encountered ‰??heavy smoke‰?? caused by the breakdown of residential pool tablets stored at the warehouse in a cardboard box that caught fire.
...
Residents in apartments on Godwin Avenue were located more than 300 feet away, so no evacuations or isolations were necessary, he said. If the event was a larger fire or if the fire had occurred in a more residential area evacuations would have been ordered.
The fire department is sending off eight sets of structural turnout gear to D&S Textiles in Fayetteville to be inspected and cleaned after exposure to the chemicals, West said.
Firefighters wore air packs to protect them from toxic fumes, and the hazmat group also used respirators to protect themselves, he said. Eight air packs will be sent back to the manufacturers or distributors to be inspected.
The building is owned by Hazmat Emergency Response and Remediation, or HERR, which cleared the scene of hazardous materials, West said.
The company will pay for the disposal of the material, which has been neutralized and is not a threat to the environment, according to the interim chief.
No fees or charges resulted from the Saturday fire.
The tablets that caused the fire were left over from other materials once stored in the warehouse, he said. There were about three to four pallets and empty barrels in the location at the time of the fire.

JOHOR BARU, Sept 15 ‰?? More than 30 residents from Kampung Baru Sri Aman in Seelong near here were evacuated after two residents fell unconscious from inhaling pungent chemical fumes from a nearby river late last night.
It was learnt that the incident occurred at about 10.15pm after two women from the village had trouble breathing and fainted due to the strong odour.
Following that, many other residents noticed the pungent chemical odour and immediately contacted the Fire and Rescue Department for assistance.
Johor Fire and Rescue Department‰??s Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) chief Saiful Bahri Safar confirmed receiving a distress call at 10.22pm and said a team was immediately despatched to the location.
He said the first team arrived at Kampung Sri Aman within 15 minutes.
‰??Two female victims in their 20s and 40s were rushed to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital and Sultan Ismail Hospital by the department‰??s Emergency Medical Response Service team after they had difficulty breathing.
Saiful Bahri said the Hazmat team then detected the suspected source of fumes at the nearby river.
‰??The personnel isolated and used damping technique in the river after they found spillage of a solid liquid upstream,‰?? he said.
A total of 24 firemen and five fire engines from the Kempas, Larkin and Johor Jaya fire stations have been dispatched to the village.
Saiful Bahri suspects the chemical liquid to be methyl alcohol based on initial tests.

A 31-year-old man died at a hospital one day after barricading inside his Anaheim apartment following an apparent explosion, police said Monday.
The incident unfolded around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, when fire authorities got a call about a possible explosion at an apartment in the 2600 block of W. Lincoln Avenue, the Anaheim Police Department said in a news release.
They arrived to find a home damaged by an apparent explosion, where they were told there was a man armed and barricaded inside.
The man, later identified as Larry Carter Jr., was confirmed to be in the apartment‰??s bathroom, armed with a knife, police said.
A SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene.

NORTH SMITHFIELD ‰?? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has completed a hazardous waste cleanup at the former Stamina Mills office site on School Street, according to a recent release from the agency.
The parcel is one piece of the Stamina Mills Superfund Site, which has undergone a larger ongoing cleanup and redevelopment project.
The focus of the completed clean-up was an area holding a structure that once served as the mill‰??s office, known to have asbestos containing material, in a state of disrepair and previously deemed unsafe to enter. After part of the roof collapsed into the building, there was an increased likelihood that asbestos fibers could be released into the environment, according to the EPA.

DELAND, Fla. ‰??
Five people were taken to the hospital after being exposed to a chemical substance at the West Volusia Solid Waste Transfer Station in DeLand.
Officials say the substance, since determined to be a mixture of household chemicals, got dumped onto the tipping floor and mixed into the transfer truck trailer.
The truck was authorized by Hazmat to be pulled from a building and stored outside.
Five people, including four transfer station employees and a customer, were hospitalized.
Officials say those involved complained of respiratory issues and eye and throat irritation.

DES MOINES, Iowa ‰??
Some employees at a FedEx Freight facility in Des Moines say they are fed up after three chemical spills in about two months. In one spill, several employees went to the emergency room.
Employees say the first, and perhaps most serious spill happened at the facility July 7 in the 5800 block of NE 22 Street in Des Moines. Employees say a worker inadvertently punctured a bulk container of formic acid. Formic acid, according to its safety data sheet, can cause difficulty breathing, nausea, coughing and more depending on the mixture of the chemical.
"It was pretty obvious there was a spill," said Cody Coenen, who was working on the facility's dock that night. "As you go into it, you just had to cough."
Coenen says the spill happened during the busiest shift.
"Nobody in the higher-ups told us at first that there was a spill," he said. "They didn't acknowledge what it was, that it was even hazardous, or that it was potentially a poison."
Coenen said he and other employees were offered facemasks, but kept working around the hazardous chemical.
"A handful of employees had to be sent to the emergency room," he said.
KCCI was able to speak with and independently confirm one of those employees who went to the emergency room.
"The whole dock was flooded with toxic vapors," said Alex Patch, a FedEx Freight worker. "They didn't tell anyone. They didn't tell them what it was, or what the hazards were. They told them to get back to work.

Authorities are not releasing the name of that product at this time.
Authorities say it is expected to be a lengthy cleanup process and cannot give an estimate of when the incident will be cleared.

Muncie, Ind. ‰?? It‰??s crucial to read labels on pesticides before each application.
Mark Carter, Purdue Extension educator in Delaware County, asked farmers to be cautious each time they apply chemicals, when speaking at the Davis Purdue Ag Center field day.
‰??Read the label,‰?? he said. ‰??It gives direct information about toxicity, active ingredients, mixing, personal protective equipment, first aid treatment, registration number and special instructions for use. The label is the law.‰??
According to Environmental Protection Agency, reading the label not only prevents accidents, but it saves money.
