RICHMOND, Va. -- An early-morning wreck that caused a tanker truck to spill thousands of gallons of diesel fuel along Interstate 95 in Richmond closed the heavily-traveled interstate for much of Saturday.

Troopers were called to the crash involving a sedan and a tanker truck on I-95 south near the Boulevard exit just after 5:40 a.m., according to Sgt. Dylan Davenport with Virginia State Police.

VDOT
Investigators said that when a 44-year-old man driving a sedan changed lanes, he hit the front of the tanker truck.

The big rig then ran off the left side of the interstate, hit the jersey wall and overturned, according to Davenport.

That is when the truck started to spill thousands of gallons of diesel fuel, according to Richmond Fire officials.

September 11, 2021 (Warner Springs) ‰?? A San Diego County Sheriff‰??s warrant search related to a Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) extraction lab early Friday morning at 28519 Highway 79 in Warner Springs also found a psilocybin (psychedelic mushroom) lab.
‰??Psilocybin labs have specific safety concerns due to the unique dangers they create with potential for spore contamination,‰?? says Sergeant Kamon Harris.

Also found were three tons of hash oil with a street value of $81.5 million and hazardous materials indicative of a possible THC extraction lab, as well as a loaded firearm, over 460 pounds of processed marijuana, and 5.5 pounds of psilocybin with a street value of $6,600.

‰??These hazardous materials may enter the local ground water supply and streams, creating extreme environmental hazards,‰?? Sgt. Harris says. Due to hazardous materials being located on the property, the San Diego County's Hazmat Team and personnel from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) responded to seize the dangerous substances.

The 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York resulted in the loss of 2,753 people in the Twin Towers and surrounding area. After the attack, more than 100,000 responders and recovery workers from every U.S. state ‰?? along with some 400,000 residents and other workers around ground zero ‰?? were exposed to a toxic cloud of dust that fell as a ghostly, thick layer of ash and then hung in the air for more than three months.

The World Trade Center dust plume, or WTC dust, consisted of a dangerous mixture of cement dust and particles, asbestos and a class of chemicals called persistent organic pollutants. These include cancer-causing dioxins and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, which are byproducts of fuel combustion.

The dust also contained heavy metals that are known to be poisonous to the human body and brain, such as lead ‰?? used in the manufacturing of flexible electrical cables ‰?? and mercury, which is found in float valves, switches and fluorescent lamps. The dust also contained cadmium, a carcinogen toxic to the kidneys that is used in the manufacturing of electric batteries and pigments for paints.

Members of the public reported seeing the dead and distressed fish in the water at Aspley, near Huddersfield.

The substance involved has been identified as sodium hydrocholrite - a disinfectant and bleaching agent - but it is not known where the chemical came from or who is responsible for its illegal release into the river.

The Environment Agency said: "We received reports of dead and distressed fish in the River Colne on September 2 and responded immediately. Our incident response officer attended the site and found that the water had been polluted with sodium hypochlorite, killing a number of fish and other aquatic life. Our investigation has confirmed the sodium hypochlorite has stopped flowing into the water. We‰??re now investigating the circumstances that led to the pollution."

IG NOBEL FOR CHEMISTS WHO ANALYSED THE SMELL OF CINEMA AUDIENCES

The 2021 Ig Nobel prize for chemistry has been awarded to a group of researchers who analysed the odours emitted by cinema-goers to try to determine the levels of violence, sex, antisocial behaviour, drug use and bad language in the films they were watching.

The team behind the work were presented with their award by Nobel laureate Barry Sharpless in an online ceremony. Sharpless noted that ‰??research on smell is undervalued and it‰??s very important‰??, and explained that his experience memorising the smell of more than 3000 stockroom chemicals was pivotal in his development as a chemist ‰?? something that would likely be advised against today.

The Ig Nobel prizes have been awarded by the Annals of Improbable Research every year since 1991, recognising scientific studies that make people ‰??laugh, then make them think‰??.

In a video describing the science behind the chemistry prize, Jonathan Williams, who leads a research group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany, explained that the team used instruments ‰??normally used to investigate the chemistry going on over the Amazon rainforest‰??, to measure the concentrations of volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide in cinemas. The aim was to see if they could develop a data-driven method to determine the age rating given to different films. They concluded that isoprene spikes in cinema air were correlated with how shocking a scene is and might help determine what age rating a film should receive. The winners each received an Ig Noble trophy that they had to assemble themselves, and a counterfeit 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollar bill.

PREDICTING THE FIRE AND EXPLOSION PROPERTIES OF EARLY-PHASE ACTIVE PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.oprd.1c00197
Tags: laboratory, discovery, environmental, dust, pharmaceutical

Early-phase drug product (DP) manufacture from an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is often performed in the absence of fire and explosion data, as material for testing either does not exist or cannot be spared. This leads to onerous processing restrictions, as properties are assumed to be ‰??worst case‰?? or processes are run with an inadequate basis of safety, leading to accidents. Full testing for fire and explosion properties uses about 800 g of material. This paper discusses predictive methodologies used by GSK R&D based on chemistry knowledge and experiments using <1 g of material to identify ‰??materials of concern‰?? (e.g., low minimum ignition energy or adverse dust explosion properties) that require additional safety measures or accelerated testing. The methodology has been employed on over 20 compounds in GSK R&D.
