Full disclosure: I am a member of ACGIH.

Since OSHA specifically acknowledges that its Permitted Exposure Levels are out of date (see https://www.osha.gov/annotated-pels as I happened to this morning on the trail of a PEL), it's important to know the origin of alternatives such as TLV's. For this reason, I believe that this notice is appropriate information for DCHAS members.

Despite the name of the organization, government funding does not support this work. In the case of ACGIH's recommendations, research into and publication of documents related to TLVs are "crowd-funded". The crowd-funding does not cover the cost of the expertise needed to generate and document the TLVs (which is provided by volunteers), but there are many overhead expenses (including preparation for legal challenges) that need to be met to maintain this resource.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Since its inception, one of ACGIH's core purposes has been to protect workplace employees through the development of science-based occupational exposure guidelines widely known as the TLVs and BEIs. These guidelines have become recognized throughout the world as forming the scientific basis for subsequent development of workplace standards.

The goal of ACGIH and the FOHS Sustainable TLV/BEI Program is to generate philanthropic financial support to ensure the continued development of ACGIH TLVs and BEIs.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, it's been made very clear that "science has been threatened". ACGIH supporters have a meaningful opportunity to maintain the serious science our organization produces by donating to the Sustainable TLV/BEI Program. Please consider a monetary gift to ensure the continued protection of workplace employees.
