I found that article entitled "How To Write A Reproducible Lab Protocol" at
https://media.nature.com/original/magazine-assets/d41586-021-02428-3/d41586-021-02428-3.pdf very interesting.
It doesn‰??t mention documenting safety aspects of lab work, but that is probably because it is focused on biological lab work rather than chemical research. However, I think that it‰??s important to note that the limits of 20th century scientific publishing practices are being felt on several fronts and ACS‰??s leadership on documenting safety practices in the lab is an important piece of that trend.
The guidelines discussed in the article are:
- Document as you go
- Write less, show more (in video format)
- Link, template, standardize (in Electronic Lab Notebooks)
- Deposit and document reagents
- Communicate
I can testify that all of these are important even in the simple chemistry I use in researching ventilation patterns in labs.
Best practices in including safety in this work are discussed in the CHAS workshop on Writing Safety Statements in Publications coming up on Oct 4. You can register for this workshop at

Spread the word to lab people you care about!
