NEW HAMPTON, Iowa ‰?? Crews continue to work to limit the damage from a spill after a train derailment southwest of New Hampton, nearly 24 hours after the crash. Chickasaw County Emergency Management reports families are being allowed back in that were initially evacuated due to the leak of anhydrous ammonia and diesel fuel.
Weather models indicate any toxic clouds from the crash are of no danger to New Hampton or its residents. Authorities will make an announcement if that were to change. The Iowa DNR is on scene monitoring water quality downstream.
The conductor and engineer from the incident were both taken to Mercy One New Hampton as a precaution and were treated and released. No other injuries have been reported. Authorities still want everyone to avoid the area due to the presence of heavy traffic and work equipment. 220th Street will remain closed between Jasper Ave. and Ivanhoe Ave.

HAZMAT CLEANS UP 7K GALLONS OF MILK ON 91 IN RIVERSIDE

A big rig carrying about 7,000 gallons of milk crashed and overturned, spilling some of its load, Sunday in Riverside.
The crash occurred on the eastbound 91 freeway at the downtown Riverside interchange about 5:20 p.m., according to the Riverside Fire Department.
The department sent 21 firefighters to the scene, along with three engines and two trucks, the department reported.

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol has reopened I-80 westbound between I-77 and I-71 Sunday evening.
The turnpike is closed near mile marker 168 after multiple semi tractor-trailers were involved in a crash that resulted in a chemical spill, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers are diverting traffic at exit 173, a dispatcher said. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
The crash occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m., the OSHP said. Debris blocked lanes and authorities could not clear the crash until the EPA Safety Team arrived to clean up the spill.

AVONDALE, AZ ‰?? Officials say two men have died and four firefighters suffered heat-related injuries after a hazmat situation at an Avondale truck wash Sunday afternoon.
Rescue and hazmat crews responded to the scene at Danny‰??s Truck Wash near 99th Avenue and Van Buren Street shortly after 1 p.m.
The Avondale Fire Department says two men died after being caught inside the vault of a semi-truck container holding an unknown residual chemical substance.
Fire personnel say they extricated the two men out of the vault while wearing full protective gear.
During the incident, four firefighters suffered heat-related injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.

SCOTTSDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT DEPLOYS DRONE TO HELP SECURE GAS LEAK

PHOENIX ‰?? Scottsdale Fire Department was assisted by the use of a drone to repair a gas leak near the intersection of Larry Hughes and Madera drives in north Scottsdale on Friday.
The gas leak was quickly identified as a six-inch main that had been torn into two pieces, according to a release.
The drone was able to discover the location of the leak while keeping risk levels low for firefighter personnel.
Firefighters said the leak was emitting a jet engine-like sounding noise.
Footage from the drone also allowed firefighters to find the safest entry points to reach the leak and secure the area.

A UK Covid testing super-lab next to the plastics plant that went up in flames was evacuated after the blaze.
Virus samples have been sent to other facilities across the country after The Rosalind Franklin laboratory, located next to the Leeson Polyurethane Ltd plant, was evacuated as a result of the blaze yesterday (August 27) morning.
The super-lab, which is the first of its kind in the country and deals with thousands of tests daily, opened last month and is operated by the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).

It was evacuated yesterday and staff were sent home - and there is no word on when it will open for business again.
Along with a number of samples being moved from the site, some samples are also being assessed to see if they have been impacted or damaged as a result of the fire.

About two thirds of Louisiana industrial sites with toxic chemicals lie in the path of Hurricane Ida, a storm with the potential to batter or flood refineries, storage tanks and other infrastructure that can release oil and other harmful liquids and gases into communities and the environment.
A Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate analysis of industrial data and Ida‰??s predicted route through the state indicates 590 sites that produce or store toxic chemicals are in harm‰??s way. Almost 380 of them are within 50 miles of the coast, putting them at particular risk from storm surge, strong winds and heavy rain, according to the analysis of sites listed in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency‰??s Toxics Release Inventory.
‰??That number of facilities at risk is something communities need to be aware of and make personal decisions about getting out of the area in case those facilities accidentally release or have incidents,‰?? said Wilma Subra, a scientist with Louisiana Environmental Action Network, on Saturday.

AMRAVATI: A major fire broke out at a chemical factory in MIDC on Badnera mini bypass road in the wee hours on Saturday, causing substantial damage to machinery and property.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but sources said short circuit might be the reason behind it. No casualties were reported in the incident. It took around seven hours for 11 fire tenders from Amravati Municipal Corporation and other municipal councils to douse the flames.
The factory of National Pesticides and Chemicals caught fire around 2am. The smoke could be seen from 2km, witnesses said. The factory building has developed fissures due to the fire and the possibility of it collapsing is being expressed.

YORK Co., Va. - The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety is on the scene of a fire at a local pool business.
The fire is at Best Pools, located off of George Washington Highway in Yorktown. Pictures and video from the scene show heavy smoke coming from the structure.
According to Chief Steve Kopczynski, the fire was called in just after 11 a.m. by an ambulance returning to a local hospital. Arriving crews reported heavy fire coming from the building.
Due to the hazardous conditions potentially caused by the business's pool chemicals, the adjacent businesses were evacuated, and crews are checking on residents in the neighboring subdivision.
Kopczynski said that hazmat crews are on scene monitoring air quality in the vicinity. The fire is currently under control, however crews continue to address hot spots and are continuously monitoring air conditions.

MANASSAS, Va. ‰?? Several employees were hospitalized after a chemical spill at a recycling facility in Manassas Friday morning, according to Prince William County Fire Department.
Fire units arrived at the scene just before 6:30 a.m. to the hazardous incident located in the 7900 block of Notes Drive, officials said. The incident happened at a solid waste collection business called Republic Services Recycling.
Officials said 15 employees were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Several employees told officials that they had trouble breathing.
At this time, crews do not know where the chemical came from. They believe the source of the spill was a household chemical in the recycling material used at the facility.
Officials said the area and businesses nearby have not been affected by the spill.

At least 15 labourers were killed after a massive fire broke out in a chemical factory in Pakistan's commercial capital of Karachi on Friday, police said.
The factory, located in the populated Korangi industrial area, caught fire when around 26 workers were present in the building, Korangi SSP Shah Jehan said, adding that rescue operations were on to find the other workers.
Fire brigade officials said that the incident happened when the blaze started in a drum of chemicals used to manufacture various items and spread across the factory, Geo TV reported.
Faisal Edhi, a rescue official, said 15 bodies have been taken out from the fire site.
"It is a chemical factory and apparently the fire broke out due to some short circuit but we are assisting in locating all the workers," he said.
Jehan said there were still some people trapped inside the building and might have died.

A POLYSTYRENE FOAM FACTORY FIRE IN A BANGKOK SATELLITE CITY: INCIDENT AND LESSONS LEARNED

A massive fire occurred at a Ming Dih polystyrene foam and pellets chemical factory in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan, Thailand, a Bangkok satellite city, and home of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport. People nearby heard a loud explosion on July 5, 2021, around 3 a.m. local time. Nearby windows were shattered. This explosion was followed by a massive fire sustained by the continuous burning of chemicals, mainly styrene monomer, which were stored in excess of 1,600 tons. Other chemicals reportedly stored at the site included 60‰??70 tons of pentane and almost 10 tons of benzoyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide. The fire burned fiercely and emitted intense heat and enormous clouds of black smoke containing toxic gases. Fire extinguishing progressed slowly due to the lack of experience and resources of local authorities. It took more than 24 h to keep the fire under control with the help of 35 fire engines, two helicopters, a generous supply of foam, and more than 200 staf!

The damages include 1 death (a firefighter), over 30 injuries, and yet-to-be-estimated property damage (Figure 1) ‰??not to mention the release of huge amounts of styrene, CO2, and byproducts from partly combusted styrene including CO, carbon particles, and PAHs. This is one of the worst fires involving chemicals in Thailand. Two other notable cases are the Klong Toey chemical warehouse fire in 1991 and the Thai Oil refinery fire in 1999.

OVERCHARGED BATTERIES FORCE EVACUATION OF EAST BOSTON FIREHOUSE

A firehouse in East Boston was evacuated Thursday evening after high levels of Hydrogen cyanide and Hydrogen sulfate were detected inside the building, the fire department said.
Over-charged batteries are believed to be the cause of the toxic levels that triggered a Level 3 hazmat response at the firehouse at 239 Sumner St, the department tweeted at about 7:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
The batteries were part of a spare fire apparatus, the department said.
‰??The batteries have been removed and the air quality is back to normal,‰?? the department tweeted at about 8 p.m.

VILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Crews worked to contain a fire at a wood finishing company in west Louisville on Thursday night after a Metrosafe spokesperson said it was likely struck by lightning.
The blaze in the 3100 block of Del Park Terrace was first called in to the Louisville Fire Department around 8:20 p.m.
Louisville Fire Capt. Bobby Cooper said the business, Anderson Finishing, is an 80,000 square foot building that is filled with chemicals including paints, solvents, and explosive liquids. Crews worked to contain the fire to prevent any explosions.
