WEST HARTFORD, Conn ‰?? Police said a homeowner trying to get rid of some chemicals ignored restrictions, which led to a smoky scene, a large hazmat response and his arrest on Wednesday.
Officers responded to the area of 61 Ballard Dr. for a hazardous material call.
According to a release, the driver from Paine‰??s Recycling company reported an unknown substance in the back of the garbage truck he was operating caused a chemical reaction.
The driver told police a white cloud began to come from the rear of the truck, which was confirmed by first responders on scene.
As a result, additional West Hartford Fire resources were called in along with AMR Ambulance, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, EnConn Environmental Police and a UConn Fire Haz Mat team.
Police said the homeowner had ordered a bulky trash pick-up. However, some of the items had to be refused by Paine‰??s as they were unknown chemicals.
According to officials, the homeowner then threw the items into the rear of the open garbage truck anyway, leading to the chemical reaction and the large emergency response.
Ballard Dr. had to be closed and remains shut down in that area until a hazardous waste clean-up is completed.
Police said the homeowner, 66-year-old John Brennan, will be responsible for the clean-up and was making his own arrangements with a licensed contractor.

The Taranaki Regional Council will take no further action on a chemical spill that closed a stretch of State Highway 3 through Stratford for four hours.

Fire crews from around the region were called to the town's main street on Monday night after two chemicals reacted and boiled over when a shop owner and plumber attempted to clean a drain.

The plumber inhaled the reaction, and was assessed at the scene as having minor injuries, while crews had to call Australia for help in dealing with the spill.

In an emailed statement, Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) compliance manager Bruce Pope said the contaminant was discharged into the waste water system.

Pope said there was no discharge to storm water, and no impact on the environment.

BIDEN EPA IS BANNING THE USE OF CHLORPYRIFOS, A PESTICIDE LINKED TO HARM IN KIDS, ON FOOD

The Environmental Protection Agency will ban the use of a pesticide widely applied on food crops but linked to neurological damage in children, reversing one of the Trump administration‰??s most fraught public health decisions.
The final rule released Wednesday will put a stop to the spraying of chlorpyrifos on fruits and vegetables across the country, to protect the health of both farmworkers dispersing the pesticide and children eating produce treated with it.
The move to curtail use of the potent insect-killing chemical on food overturns a 2017 decision by then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt to keep the pesticide on the market despite a recommendation by the agency‰??s scientists to restrict it, given its potential risks.
‰??This comes after more than a decade of science in which it became pretty clear that there were potential neurodevelopmental effects on children that were being observed at lower levels than people had previously thought,‰?? Michal Freedhoff, the EPA‰??s top official for chemical safety and pollution prevention, said in a phone interview.
