The driver of a heavy goods vehicle that shed its load of chemicals in Tromode closing the road for 10 hours has been fined.
Neville Marshall, of Conister Road in Douglas, admitted driving a vehicle with an unsecure load on Ballafletcher Road on 12 August last year.
The court heard he was a self-employed driver for a haulage firm and had not loaded the chemicals on to the curtained trailer himself.
Magistrates fined the 65-year-old å£400.
He was also ordered to pay å£500 in costs and given three penalty points on his licence.
The court heard he had been working as a driver for Graylaw and was given a job delivering six 1,000-litre containers to the Isle of Man Creamery in Tromode.
But when he tried to deliver the load to the creamery it was rejected as staff at the site did not have the machinery to offload the containers.
Three crates, which contained potassium borate, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), fell off the back of the vehicle as he exited the site onto Ballafletcher Road, with one spilling some of its contents onto the carriageway.
The defence said he had played no part in loading or securing the chemicals onto the trailer he had been towing as that was done by employees of the haulage firm.

A fire at the Kamenski chemical plant in southern Russia on the evening of 29 July killed one worker and hospitalised six others with serious injuries, according to multiple media outlets including Euronews. The fatality and injuries were reportedly primarily caused by chemical burns. The facility produces a variety of chemical products for both military and civilian use.
An official in charge of conventional arms and ammunition at the Russian ministry of industry and trade is overseeing an investigation into the incident, Agence France Presse (AFP) said. The ministry hinted that worker safety regulation violations were at least partly to blame for the fatal mishap. ‰??The technological operation during which the fire occurred is highly automated and does not foresee the presence of people on the shop floor,‰?? the ministry said in a statement quoted by AFP.

Banham Poultry has been evacuated after emergency services were called to a suspected chemical incident.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service were called at around 10.40am this morning [Wednesday August 4] to an incident at the poultry factory in Attleborough.
A spokesperson confirmed the incident was a hazmat leak and not a fire.
Pumps from Attleborough, East Harling, Thetford and Sprowston were in attendance, with crews using breathing apparatus.
They added everyone has been evacuated from the factory.

TULSA, Oklahoma - Tulsa Fire's Hazmat unit and the Tulsa Police Bomb Squad gave the all-clear Wednesday morning dangerous liquid inside an old safe near 11th and Highway 169.
"The device has vials of tear gas in it. So out of an abundance of caution, we contacted the police and fire department to see what we need to do with it," said Derek Taylor of Taylor's Treasure's Estate Sales & Consignments
The group was getting ready for an estate sale when they discovered the 100-year-old safe. A handwritten note was also found, saying the vials were either Nitroglycerin or Chloropicrin.
The note stated the chemicals inside the vials were highly volatile from World War I. Police say the bomb squad safely removed the vials and disposed of them at a secure location.

WAVERLY ‰??On Saturday evening, Waverly Fire and Rescue Department responded to a hazmat level 3 investigation at the Waverly Pool in Wayne Park.
Hydrochloric acid, a common pool disinfectant, had leaked onto the ground in the pump room at the pool. Parks and Recreation Director Shayna Murrell said the feeder tube connected to the acid had cracked, causing the leak.
WFRD responded with 11 personnel and were at the pool for about two hours until the issue was ‰??isolated and contained within the mechanical room of the facility,‰?? Assistant Chief Ryan Mueller wrote in an email.
WFRD was assisted by Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department‰??s hazmat team as well as Lincoln Fire Rescue. Lancaster County Sheriff‰??s Deputy was also in attendance to take care of the public.
‰??There were no civilian or fire personnel exposures that required medical attention on location or transport to an emergency facility,‰?? Mueller wrote.

The three-inch pipe was broken by an excavator while construction was underway on S. Shepherd Drive near U.S. 59, according to the fire department.
Multiple HFD crews, including HFD Hazmat, responded at 8:47 a.m. Wednesday morning. The hazmat team is currently monitoring air quality in the area.
Officials did not implement a shelter-in-place, but the fire department advised residents to avoid the area. There have been no reported injuries, according to HFD.
The situation was declared mitigated by the fire department at around 1:10 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

It's been a year since one of the world's largest ever non-nuclear explosions ripped through Lebanon's capital, killing more than 200 people.
On any given day in Beirut's worst-affected neighborhoods, theories about the explosion still circulate. No two stories of human tragedy are alike, and most interactions between people here end not with a goodbye, but with an invocation that Lebanon's ruling elite be toppled.
The political class is, overwhelmingly, blamed for the disaster.
At just after 6 p.m. on August 4, 2020, hundreds of metric tons of ammonium nitrate ignited, sparking the massive blast in the city's port.
The industrial chemicals had been improperly stored there for years due to the failure to act by successive governments and lawmakers across the political divide. That much is clear.
But for people across Lebanon, there are still many unanswered questions about what led to the tragedy, and there has been no sense of closure in the 12 months since the explosion.

Cincinnati firefighters remain at the Gamble-Nippert Branch of the YMCA in Westwood Wednesday afternoon after a report of a chemical vapor in the building relating to a hot tub being serviced, said a fire department spokesperson.
A 911 call came into dispatchers shortly after 2 p.m. of a chemical issue at the YMCA at 3159 Avenue, said Catherine Ritter, a spokeswoman for Cincinnati Fire Department.
Firefighters remained at the YMCA as of 4:20 p.m.
It remains an active scene, Ritter said.
While a hot tub was being serviced, chemicals were mixed, and it created a vapor or mist in the building, Ritter said.

Pune: Trade union members demonstrated outside the Industrial Safety and Health Department (ISH) and Employees‰?? Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) offices in Chinchwad and Nigdi, respectively, demanding action against officials for their alleged negligence that led to the fire at a chemical factory at Urawade, near Pirangut, in June.
Altogether 17 people had lost their lives in the fire.
Leaders and activists claimed that due diligence was not followed regarding the operation of the plant, owned by SVS Aqua Technologies. The plant was in operation for many years before the owners applied for ISH sanction, they said.
Ajit Abhyankar, leader of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (Citu), said some of the people who had perished in the blaze were not registered with the Employees‰?? State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), and the employees were registered with the EPFO only a month before the fire broke out.

City Commissioners voted to amend the conditional use permit (CUP) for Helena Agri-Enterprises, LLC, locally known as Helena Chemical, to allow them to periodically store anhydrous ammonia on site in order to manufacture ammonium polyphosphate to supply to local farmers as a fertilizer.
The storage will be located at the company‰??s property at 6201 18th Ave. N. According to the resolution background, the chemicals would likely be on site for approximately two weeks at a time with Helena Chemical estimating it will likely take place twice per year. However, there is no formal limit in the resolution.
The process would involve, per the background, a truck-mounted blending unit that will process an estimated 180,000 gallons of finished ammonium polyphosphate and will use all the anhydrous ammonia stored in the rail cars or trucks in approximately twenty-four hours that would be blended together.
