A mum was sprayed with antifreeze as she was in her car with her infant son during a road rage attack in a Lidl car park.

The victim felt itching to her eyes, a burning sensation to her nose and feared that acid had been thrown over her.

Firefighters were contacted and a hazmat team was also deployed following the incident on June 29, 2019.

Manners appeared before Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to an offence of administering a noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

Howard Shaw, prosecuting, said the victim was in her car with her two-year-old son outside the store on Amberton Road as she waited for her husband.

A chemical leak closed Gainesville's City Hall Thursday and forced the cancellation of this afternoon‰??s City Commission meeting.

Rossana Passaniti, a city spokeswoman, wrote in an email that two chemicals being used in roof work at City Hall entered the building through the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Gainesville Fire Rescue evacuated the building until air quality issues can be resolved," she wrote.

The City Commission meeting scheduled for today has been rescheduled for Monday at 3 p.m.

Johnson & Johnson issued a recall July 14 for all lots of several of its Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreens because of benzene contamination. Benzene is a known carcinogen that can be absorbed through the skin, lungs, and digestive tract.

The recall follows a late-May report by the independent research lab Valisure, which detected benzene in 78 sun-care products, including several from Neutrogena. J&J says it did its own testing and found benzene in five product lines.

Valisure CEO David Light says he isn‰??t aware of any other public actions taken by makers of the sun products, though the drugstore chain CVS appears to have stopped selling a store-brand aloe spray in which Valisure found benzene at high levels.

The source of the benzene is still unclear, and Light says his firm is eager to collaborate on ways to figure it out. He says the ethanol used in some aerosols could be the culprit; in March, Valisure found benzene in 44 ethanol-based hand sanitizers.

BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) -A flipped semi-truck off of US 301 in Bradford County has kept the road closed off nearly all morning into the early afternoon as fire rescue crews from Gainesville and Bradford County worked to clear the scene of the accident.

‰??Upon arrival, we did find a tanker rolled over that was containing some hazardous materials,‰?? said Bradford County Fire Division Chief, Ben Carter.

To be specific, the KC Industries truck held ferric sulfate, which is an acid harmful to people, the environment and aquatic life.

‰??Which is a type of acid, added Carter. ‰??It was corrosive material based on the type of hazmat placard that was on the truck as well as the type of actual tank that it was being carried in and so we identified that pretty quick off.‰??

Two people were taken to the hospital with minor irritation after pool chemicals became mixed and created a dangerous gas at a building in the Woodroffe area.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) says the hazardous materials team was called to a building on Edgeworth Avenue near Carling Avenue at around 3:36 p.m. Wednesday after people reported the gas had irritated their eyes.

Everyone had evacuated the garage where the chemicals had mixed by the time the crew arrived.

"Haz-Mat technicians located a pool chlorine product which had mixed with other chemicals causing the reaction and creating a dangerous gas," OFS said in a release.

Ottawa Paramedics told CTV News Ottawa that a 45-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman were taken to the hospital for treatment. A third person was assessed at the scene but did not go to the hospital.

An odor emanating from lab ovens Wednesday morning led to a hazmat incident report outside of the Chemical and Nuclear Engineering building.

After faculty members observed a smell coming from the ovens, they placed the equipment outside of the building, according to a statement provided by a University of Maryland spokesperson. They alerted the hazmat team ‰??out of an abundance of caution,‰?? according to the statement.

The hazardous materials response team found no indication of the harmful gases or chemicals in the area, according to the statement. The fire department deemed the area safe just before 10:40 a.m., according to an alert.

The alert came in the heat of a power outage announced hours earlier, which affected at least 20 campus buildings, according to a UMD alert. Between the two events, the university‰??s digital alert system sent seven messages in less than four hours.

MIDLAND, Mich. (WJRT) - One person was injured from a carbon dioxide leak in Midland Costco store‰??s refrigeration system on Tuesday afternoon.

The Midland Fire Department says employees evacuated the store at 4816 Bay City Road before they arrived just after noon. Investigators found a leak in a pipe coming from a compressor in the carbon dioxide refrigeration system.

Firefighters dressed in full hazardous materials suits and self-contained breathing systems entered the store and turned off the refrigeration system to stop the leak. Fire crews ventilated the store to clear the excessive carbon dioxide levels.

The Midland Fire Department used equipment from Dow Chemical Co. and Climate Pros to monitor carbon dioxide levels in the store and determine when the building was safe for the public again.

BLOOMINGTON ‰?? Harvest season is just around the corner, and the top leader of the Corn Growers Association, a fire in Northern Illinois this past June, will hurt farmers all across the state.

In June, the Chemtool plant in Rockton, Illinois, accidentally exploded, causing the plant to be a total loss.

Rodney Weinzierl, executive director of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, says the plant produced around 50% of the grease farmers use on machinery.

‰??I know there was a really bad fire up in Rockford here a number of weeks ago, and there‰??s been a lot of issues around, you know, whether there‰??s what kind of pollution or toxins were released. But, you know from a farmers perspective, you know, you kind of feel bad for what happened up there to the workers and the factory and all that. But, here not too recently, that that factory produced a lot of the grease that‰??s used in the machinery area.

DULUTH, Minn.- The DECC‰??s public spaces were clear of ammonia and safe to enter Wednesday, after a major leak overnight. DECC officials say it‰??s the result of the convention center‰??s aging infrastructure that needs serious investment.

‰??Went through the lion‰??s share of the building with a reader to see if any of the ammonia smell was around anymore and the vast, vast, vast majority of the building is at 0,‰?? said Dan Hartman, the DECC‰??s Executive Director.

The leak was discovered in the machine which cools Pioneer Hall and the Duluth Curling Club, and keeps the club‰??s ice frozen.

That machine was built in 1976. ‰??This is a pretty common thing in ice-making facilities,‰?? said the Executive Director.

Hartman said his engineers won‰??t be able to assess it for 5 days ‰?? but it could be the most expensive repair in a decade.

‰??We‰??re gonna have to get a new ice plant,‰?? he said. ‰??So, and that won‰??t be cheap or easy. So, but that‰??ll be something we‰??ll have to figure out in the future.‰??

CSHEMA ‰?? Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association ‰?? is awarding the Research Safety Culture Program the Marketing ‰?? Single Media Award for the Research Safety Orange Folder, an interactive resource designed to assist with onboarding and training researchers at CSU. CSHEMA is a national organization for environmental, health and safety professionals in higher education.

The Research Safety Orange Folder was developed by Research Safety Culture Coordinator Anthony Appleton, Communications and Events Manager Lauren Klamm and Web and Content Specialist Emma Mannino. They will receive the award on July 26 at the CSHEMA Virtual Conference.

‰??This award confirms that research safety takes a village ‰?? from researchers discussing their needs to research support being easily accessible to open communication leading to collaboration ‰?? the Research Safety Orange Folder required people from across Colorado State University,‰?? Appleton said. ‰??In the end, I believe we created a resource that is the manifestation of our Principles of Community, at least from a research safety perspective.‰??
Removing barriers
Work on the project started in Spring 2019 and became a useable resource by Spring 2020. Appleton said the fact that its release coincided with COVID‰??s effects on research made its impact especially critical.

‰??Anyone, anywhere, could, for the first time, help themselves or others to determine what research safety and compliance training they needed using one webpage for all safety and compliance needs for any researcher at CSU,‰?? he said. ‰??Improving culture through convenience leads to compliance.‰??

Appleton explained that the webpage has helped to remove barriers to access and has significantly reduced researcher burden. With ease, researchers now have access to onboarding, compliance training, safety training, reporting safety mechanisms, and all research support contact information on one webpage.

DEVELOPMENT OF A SAFE CONTINUOUS PROCESS TO SODIUM NITROTETRAZOLATE VIA SOLID PHASE ‰??CATCH AND RELEASE‰??

Sodium nitrotetrazolate (NaNT) is a key intermediate to copper(I) nitrotetrazolate (DBX-1), a material of interest as a replacement for lead based primary explosives. Historical syntheses of NaNT were plagued with safety issues that prevented the large-scale manufacturing of NaNT. In this article, we detail the development of a safe process to generate NaNT in a continuous flow reactor via solid phase ‰??catch and release‰??; a process that also reduces the formation of the most detrimental impurities that inhibit the synthesis of DBX-1. Furthermore, we discuss the demonstration of this process in 100 and 1000 mL continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) and implications of scale-up of this process for robust production of NaNT at the manufacturing scale.
