The Tampa Bay Times dropped part one of its "Poisoned" series Wednesday ‰?? an investigative look into the dangers of the Gopher Resource, a lead-smelting factory in Tampa.

Why it matters: The only lead smelter in the state, Gopher employs more 300 people ‰?? mostly Black or immigrants ‰?? and they've been exposed to dangerously high lead levels for a decade.

"Regular tasks" left workers "caked with [lead] dust, as though they'd been dunked in powdered sugar."

Health department records show the plant is why Hillsborough has more adult lead poisoning cases than any other county in the state.

The reporters examined thousands of pages of regulatory reports and company documents, including data tracking the amount of lead in the air and in workers‰?? blood.

Points of intrigue:

Gopher's company-contracted doctor didn‰??t tell workers their blood-lead levels put them in danger and cleared them for work even when they had lead-related health problems.

The company hasn't crossed OSHA's line for the maximum amount of lead allowed inside a worker‰??s body ‰?? but the Times points out that standard was established 42 years ago, and health officials have called it "out of touch with modern science."

WINDSOR, ONT -- Municipal officials are ‰??shrinking‰?? the evacuation order down to just two properties and allowing all 31 residents to return home.

‰??We can‰??t carry this on forever,‰?? Chatham-Kent Fire Chief Chris Case told CTV News Saturday.

‰??We cannot tell people it's safe. We can tell people that there was a risk, that risk is still there but the actual gas is no longer present that‰??s all we can tell them.‰??

On June 2, 2021, a hydrogen sulphide gas leak was detected inside 15 Erie St. North in Wheatley.

Chief Case describes it as 'toxic and highly explosive gas coming out of the ground in sufficient quantities that it could have exploded.'

First responders shut off all utilities to a block of buildings at Erie and Talbot, evacuated 31 residents and closed 12 businesses.

Chief Case says firefighters have been on scene ever since testing the entire perimeter every 15 minutes for gas.

ROCKTON, Ill. (WTVO) ‰?? Rockton residents continue to deal with the aftermath of Monday‰??s massive chemical fire.

Although an evacuation order‰??which was keeping some people from their homes‰?? has been lifted, several families started off their weekend working to clean up their properties.

We caught up with one of them who they tell us they‰??re expecting a long road ahead.

Although they believe the worst of the situation is behind them, they‰??re expecting it will take weeks or even months to return to normal life

‰??There doesn‰??t seem to be any damage, pretty much just a little debris in the backyard. Other than that, same old place,‰?? said Wayne Desjardin.

Rockton resident Wayne Desjardin says his mother and father-in-law were two of the people who were told to evacuate early Monday morning after they heard an explosion coming from the Chemtool plant.

‰??They said it actually rocked the house, it shook the house,‰?? said Desjardin.

A hazardous materials incident at New Jersey State Police offices in Mercer County was not as serious as it initially sounded, a NJSP spokesman said.

A pool pump overloaded, causing a haze in the ground-floor gymnasium at 1040 River Road, the spokesman said.

The haze set off a smoke alarm which prompted a brief evacuation of the building at 1040 River Road in Ewing, according to Sgt. Alejandro Goez.

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Hazmat crews cleaned up a chemical spill at an industrial company in Fresno County on Friday morning.

CAL FIRE/Fresno County firefighters were called to Custom Ag Formulators Incorporated on Willow Avenue near North Avenue.

Officials say the chemical spilled, and crews from the Fresno County Environmental Health Department, Fresno County Sheriff's Office and Fresno Fire were helping to mitigate the hazard.

CAL FIRE confirmed the substance that spilled inside the building was nitric acid.

All employees were evacuated from the building.

No one was injured, and investigators have not yet said what led to the spill.

ROCKTON ‰?? An evacuation order remains in effect for homes and businesses within one mile of the fire-ravaged Chemtool plant on Prairie Hill Road as state and federal officials study chemicals in the debris.

There is no timetable for allowing evacuees to return to their homes, but test results from ash, debris and water collected by the Environmental Protection Agency are expected to be returned Friday morning.

No field tests have identified any chemicals or substances of concern so far, "which I think is very optimistic," said Sandra Martell, administrator of the Winnebago County Public Health Department. Those field tests must be confirmed with further laboratory testing.

"It's kind of like a finger stick for your blood glucose versus laboratory testing to diagnose diabetes," Martell said. "We want to confirm those results."

SOUTH YARMOUTH ‰?? One Stop & Shop employee was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after she was exposed to an unknown acid.

An employee from the 55 Long Pond Drive Stop & Shop came into the Yarmouth Fire Station at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday complaining about her hands burning from what she thought was a chemical exposure while stocking shelves, Lt. Matt Bearse said.

Fire department staff rinsed her hands off and she felt better, Bearse said. Firefighters then went to Stop & Shop to investigate. They isolated the totes she was using to stock shelves and asked for a hazardous materials team to come in, Bearse said.

The hazardous materials team found an unknown mild acid substance in one of the totes and recommended the employee go to the hospital as a precaution. Another employee drove her to the hospital, and the hazardous materials team is investigating what the substance and where the boxes came from, Bearse said.

NEW PHILADELPHIA ‰?? About three gallons of a chemical used in the water treatment process were accidentally released from the water department into the Tuscarawas River on Thursday afternoon.

The material, sodium permanganate, did not harm the water or wildlife, according to Fire Capt. Robert Snyder. He said the chemical is used to treat metals in water.

"It's going to be OK. There's not going to be any problems. It'll just mix with the water," Snyder said.

Firefighters were initially called at 3:09 p.m. about a red cloud above the river behind Gradall, at 406 Mill Ave. SW.

Snyder said that he responded to the nearby city boat ramp to view the situation. Police had already arrived.

New Philadelphia firefighters went up river in a boat and soon found the source of the contaminant was a tank belonging to the water department, at 310 Mill Ave. SW.

The weather is heating up and the price to maintain swimming pools is rising right along with the temperatures.

Pool owners and pool supply stores are feeling the impact of a nationwide chlorine shortage.

WAAY-31 spoke to a non-profit about the impact on their swimming pool operations.

The price of a small tab that helps keep swimming pools clean has gone up more than 25% and that‰??s putting a pinch on places like Thornton Acres pool.

"Last year, this time, a 5-gallon bucket of 2-inch chlorine tabs would've cost us around $80. This year, our first 5-gallon bucket cost us $150," said Susan McDougal.

Susan McDougal is the treasurer at Thornton Acres pool and she said she can't believe how much the price has gone up for the chlorine.

It‰??s because of a huge chemical plant fire in Louisiana last year that led to a shortage of chlorine tablets.

ROCKTON, Ill. (AP) ‰?? Government officials say a company hired to extinguish a fire that gutted a northern Illinois chemical plant used foam containing toxic compounds that have contaminated many U.S. waters.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the company sprayed foam made with PFAS chemicals onto the fire Tuesday at the Chemtool factory near Rockton, near the Wisconsin line.

Federal and state officials say the company switched to a foam without the chemicals after they intervened.

PFAS substances are used in many industrial and household products and are called ‰??forever chemicals‰?? because they don't degrade in the environment.

Officials are testing groundwater and a nearby river and say no PFAS pollution has been detected.
