fire broke out at a chemical factory in the Battal Ballian industrial area of Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district in the early hours of Friday. The fire was doused after three hours of firefighting.
The fire started at the factory of Dhanuka Agritech Limited at around 12.30 am. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot but the fire went out of control. Following this, the Air Force was called in to douse the fire. Fire tenders from defence forces were also roped in for extinguishing the fire.
Speaking to India Today, an Air Force officer said, "We got a call from fire tender Udhampur that a massive fire has broken out in the industrial area. We rushed to the spot and for the last three hours, we have been trying to douse the fire but it is still out of control."

WILL BIDEN ROLLBACK CHEMICAL SAFETY RULES THAT CONTRIBUTED TO DEADLY 2013 EXPLOSION IN TEXAS?

The Biden administration has overturned dozens of environmental rollbacks from the Trump presidency, but a handful of key regulatory reforms to chemical safety remain on the backburner.

The proposed rule changes actually pre-date the Trump administration, going all the way back to a deadly 2013 explosion in a small Texas town. The same dangerous conditions that contributed to that disaster are still permitted today, nearly a decade later.

BENCHMARKS FOR INTERPRETATION OF QSAR MODELS
https://jcheminf.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13321-021-00519-x
Tags: laboratory, discovery, environmental

Interpretation of QSAR models is useful to understand the complex nature of biological or physicochemical processes, guide structural optimization or perform knowledge-based validation of QSAR models. Highly predictive models are usually complex and their interpretation is non-trivial. This is particularly true for modern neural networks. Various approaches to interpretation of these models exist. However, it is difficult to evaluate and compare performance and applicability of these ever-emerging methods. Herein, we developed several benchmark data sets with end-points determined by pre-defined patterns. These data sets are purposed for evaluation of the ability of interpretation approaches to retrieve these patterns. They represent tasks with different complexity levels: from simple atom-based additive properties to pharmacophore hypothesis. We proposed several quantitative metrics of interpretation performance. Applicability of benchmarks and metrics was demonstrated on a!
set of conventional models and end-to-end graph convolutional neural networks, interpreted by the previously suggested universal ML-agnostic approach for structural interpretation. We anticipate these benchmarks to be useful in evaluation of new interpretation approaches and investigation of decision making of complex ‰??black box‰?? models.

Authorities in Worcester shut down a portion of Webster Street for about 30 minutes due to a hazmat situation that occurred Wednesday in one of the rail cars that sat above the road on the train tracks.

At around 10 a.m., firefighters responded to a call of a hissing noise coming from one of the rail cars, which was located on the railroad tracks near 100 Webster St., Worcester Deputy Fire Chief Martin Dyer said.

After arriving, firefighters determined the car had high levels of carbon dioxide in it, Dyer said. The issue stemmed from a release valve on the rail car, which is part of its design when pressure becomes too high, Dyer said.

QUETTA:
A ship full of hazardous materials arrived on Wednesday in the coastal town of Gadani located in Balochistan‰??s Lasbela district despite repeated Interpol warnings.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lasbela has taken notice and ordered concerned authorities to conduct an inquiry into how a ship filled with hazardous materials can be docked at Gadani Shipbreaking Yard. According to sources familiar with the matter, it has been brought to the yard for shipbreaking.
The Gadani Shipbreaking Yard is the third largest ship-breaking yard in the world and consists of 132 ship-breaking plots.
Authorities familiar with the matter said the Interpol had asked Pakistani authorities including the Federal Investigation Agency on April 22 to stop the ship from entering Pakistani waters as it contained 1,500 tons of highly dangerous mercury sludge. The ship was not allowed to enter the waters of Bangladesh and India due to the same reason.

A major company has made a commitment to cleanup hazardous material throughout Southland.

In a multi-million dollar move, Rio Tinto will continue to relocate aluminium dross left at a old mill in Mataura - and take it to the smelter at Tiwai Point.

Once this is complete, hazardous material throughout Invercargill will also be taken to the smelter.

Environment minister David Parker told Heather du Plessis-Allan the renewed commitment is likely due to media pressure - and an already damaged reputation.

"There's been a change at the top, a new chief executive, and they came to meet with us and wanted to turn a page and they are going to get cracking removing some of this aluminium dross."

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. ‰?? Central Park Boulevard was closed in Southfield as authorities investigated a potential hazmat situation at a hotel Wednesday morning.
According to Southfield police, an employee at the Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham, located on Central Park Boulevard, smelled chemicals in a room. The smell reportedly was so bad they had to close the door, police said.
According to authorities, the fire department evacuated everyone within 300 feet of the room from the building as officials worked to find out what kind of chemicals they were dealing with.
The area was reopened just before 2 p.m. Wednesday when authorities said the caustic chemical smell was revealed to be hair dye.

Many people collected hazardous debris washed ashore from a fire-stricken container vessel off the Western coast, despite warnings. Authorities have urged people living along the coastal belt between Wattala and Negombo area not to touch debris from the ill-fated ship X-Press Pearl, some of whose containers have fallen into the sea.

The crew abandoned the vessel on Tuesday morning (25) following explosions on board the vessel. Well informed sources said that firefighting efforts hadn‰??t been successful and the fire fuelled by chemicals seemed out of control.

Chairman of Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Siripala Amarasinghe yesterday (26) warned of the danger of collecting various items washed ashore as the vessel was carrying a range of chemicals and other toxic items.

CEA Chairman Amarasinghe said that they had taken steps to prevent environmental damage caused by the ship, but the Negombo beach was littered with debris from the stricken vessel.

Waste Control was temporarily closed Wednesday morning as firefighters responded to the reported leak of an unknown chemical.

Longview Fire Department and the hazmat team from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue responded to the possible hazardous material leak first reported around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. The caller reported the leak was irritating several employees‰?? eyes.

Waste Control evacuated the building and relocated the product to a safe area away from other buildings, customers and employees before the crews arrived. Staff tried to identify the product using their video camera system and ventilation system.

The crews sent a team into Waste Control‰??s primary building to monitor for certain gases and found high levels of refrigerant and low levels of volatile organic compounds, according to the press release.

The team also tested the product that had been removed from the facility and came up negative, the release stated. They concluded some type of refrigerant had released, likely from the weight or impact of other debris.

He knew it was coming.

Having spent half of his 20-year career educating other firefighters about how to protect themselves from toxic smoke on the job, Jim Burneka wasn't surprised to hear he had thyroid cancer last month.

"I've known for a while that it wasn't a matter of if, but when," he said. "I know I've been a ticking time bomb."

The chemical cocktail inhaled or absorbed into skin while battling blazes gives the nation's roughly 400,000 career firefighters a 9% greater chance of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% greater chance of dying from it than the general population, making cancer the top cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service.

Perhaps no one knows that better than Burneka, 41, a member of the Dayton Firefighters Local 136 who 10 years ago started his own cancer consulting business to educate other firefighters about the risks of the job. He also hosts a podcast, "The 25 Live," distributed by the nation's largest fire magazine, Fire Engineering.

FINDINGS SHOW 2019 TANK FIRE EXPLOSION IN CROCKETT WAS DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN

CROCKETT, Calif. - The double explosion of two chemical tanks back in October of 2019 in Crockett that resulted in a 15-acre fire, scared a lot of people and set off a year-plus investigation.

In a 525-page scathing and damning report published on Tuesday, federal, state, and local investigators found that the NuStar tank explosions and fire were a disaster waiting to happen.

Static electricity build-up or a spark in one tank that was due to improper grounding are the most likely causes of the first tank, which contained ethyl alcohol, to explode. When the roof blew off that tank, it landed on a neighboring tank causing a second explosion.

Federal investigators join probe of fire at fuel storage facility in Crockett
Fire crews work to make sure flames at NuStar Energy plant in Crockett don't reignite.

"It seems they had a lot to cover up," said Crockett resident Ed Tannenbaum, who is also a member of the publicly set up Fenceline Monitoring Committee, a citizens group that closely the refinery next door.

"I'm a little bit afraid of this company right now," said Tannenbaum.

The reason for his concern is found in a report issued by a joint commission of Contra Costa agencies.
