Syracuse, N.Y. ‰?? At 12:32 P.M., Monday May 10th the Syracuse Fire Department was called to 947 James Street for reports of a strong chemical odor inside the building. The first firefighters to arrive immediately began to evacuate everyone and called for the Hazardous Materials Response Team. Some of the building‰??s occupants began complaining of chest pain and difficulty breathing. Firefighters began treating those affected, and several AMR ambulances were called to the incident. A total of seven people were evaluated or treated at the scene, and four were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions are not currently known.
Firefighters utilized detection equipment to determine what chemical compounds were present in the air. Several substances were identified, most of which were common solvents. One of the occupants refused to leave the building or cooperate, and would not permit firefighters to check his apartment or the area surrounding it. The Syracuse Police Department made contact with the individual, and spent nearly three hours negotiating and urging him to allow firefighters to check that portion of the building. He eventually agreed to come outside and firefighters were able to check his apartment and the nearby hallway. At that point, the chemical odor had completely dissipated and it could not be determined exactly where it had originated.

HYDERABAD: A mysterious explosion triggered panic at Petbasheerabad late on Tuesday. Police said a bag hurled by a ragpicker at a dog who was chasing the former had exploded. Police suspect that a chemical substance in the bag had exploded.
Clues team and bomb squad were called into examine the material. The samples are being collected and sent for forensic examination. Police said the ragpicker collected some material from a garbage dump and packed it in a bag. A stray dog then chased him. To shoo the dog away, the ragpicker hurled the bag at it that exploded with a loud noise.
Locals in area ran for help and there was panic in the area. Police also rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area and detained the rag picker. He is being questioned and a case has been registered at the Petbasheerabad police station.

An interstate highway has reopened near after a crash and hazardous materials spill led to evacuations of nearby homes near the Georgia-South Carolina line, authorities said.
Interstate 85 reopened around 8 a.m. Monday, WYFF-TV reported. The northbound lanes had been closed for more than 10 hours.
A commercial vehicle overturned and leaked the chemical methyl acrylate, authorities said.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Four people were hospitalized and another three were treated after chemicals were found ‰??present in the air‰?? at a Green National hospital, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.
Firefighters and police responded to the Chestnut Crossing Apartments, located at 947 James Street, just after 12:30 p.m. for a reported strong chemical odor in the building, according to a fire department news release.
Those who were inside evacuated from the building and some developed chest pains and struggled to breathe, the release said.
The fire department said they do not know conditions the four people hospitalized.
The chemicals in the air were common solvents, according to the fire department.
One man refused to leave the building and wouldn‰??t allow firefighters to check his apartment, the release said. Syracuse police had to negotiate with the man for three hours before he allowed firefighters to check his apartment, according to the fire department.

TOKYO, May 11 (Reuters) - An explosion at a Sakai Chemical Industry plant in Fukushima prefecture in northeast Japan has injured at least four people, public broadcaster NHK reported.
An image published online by NHK showed a plume of smoke rising from the plant. The company manufactures chemicals used in paints, printer ink, plastics and other products.
Police and fire service officials are investigating the cause of the incident, NHK said.

Five deputies who went to a call of a man not breathing at a Pico Rivera home later felt sick and ended up at a hospital Monday, May 10.
The deputies were treated and released, said Deputy Eva Jimenez, a Los Angeles County Sheriff‰??s Department spokeswoman.
What made the deputies ill remained a mystery as of Monday night.
Hazmat teams from the Sheriff‰??s and the Los Angeles County Fire departments didn‰??t find hazardous materials in the home on the 8400 block of Kellam Lane, according to Inspector Sean Ferguson, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire.
Fire Capt. Ron Haralson added that the teams didn‰??t detect carbon monoxide either.
The incident started when the Sheriff‰??s Pico Rivera station received a call at 12:21 p.m. of a man not breathing. Firefighters also went to the same house.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene then left, Ferguson said. But firefighters were called back to the home at 12:51 p.m. because several deputies weren‰??t feeling well, Ferguson said.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA (FOX Carolina)- The Georgia Department of Transportation says truck crash causing the spill of hazardous materials near Sandy Cross Road in Franklin County is delays on all northbound lanes of traffic on I-85.
Georgia Department of Safety officials say that a commercial vehicle carrying hazardous material crashed near mile marker 160 in Franklin County. The hazardous material spilled as a result of the crash, according to officials.
Initially, the entire interstate was shut down, but around 11 p.m., Department of Public Safety officials said southbound lanes were reopened. Officials say that northbound traffic is being detoured off of the nearby exit ramp and allowed back onto I-85 on the other side.
Officials say that a hazmat team is currently working to clean up the spill and load the hazardous material onto another truck. Officials add that the hazardous spill is contained at this time.

Escambia Fire Rescue responded to another active structure fire at Ascend Performance Materials on old Chemstrand Road Sunday afternoon, the second fire at the chemical plant in a week.
The fire was in an area about 150 yards from the location of a fire at the plant last week.
Multiple Escambia Fire Rescue stations responded to assist Ascend‰??s internal fire department. Ascend requested two engines for assistance with an active fire, according to Escambia County spokesperson Laura Coale. A total of 12 Escambia Fire Rescue units responded, including three engines, a squad truck and one ladder truck.
There was no danger to the public outside the plant, and there were no evacuations ordered.
There were no injuries.
Escambia Fire Rescue also responded to a structure fire at the plant on May 5.
