HAZMAT INCIDENT AT WOODRIDGE'S NEWBURG EGG PROCESSING CENTER

WOODRIDGE, NY ‰?? On Sunday, April 25, at 12:12 p.m., the Sullivan County 911 Center received a report of two employees at the Newburg Egg processing facility, at 17 Novogrodsky Road in Woodridge, having a possible allergic reaction. Mobilemedic EMS arrived a short time later and immediately requested the Woodridge Fire Department for a possible chemical leak.
Woodridge firefighters responded and, along with the Woodridge Police Department, started to evacuate the facility. Shortly thereafter, all 95 people working in the facility were successfully evacuated and accounted for.
Orange County Hazard Materials Response Team responded, as well as the Rolling V Bus Transportation Services. All the employees were evaluated for any illness, and in total, 19 were transported to Garnet Health Medical Center ‰?? Catskills in Harris, all for non-life-threatening injuries. All were complaining of dizziness and headache, with a few complaining of shortness of breath.
While the cause of the exposures and the chemical involved is still under investigation, it is believed that there was a small leak in one of the supply lines involved in the processing and preserving of the eggs.
Part of the facility has been temporarily closed for inspection and repair. The unaffected sections remain open.

TANKER LEAKED HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WSMV) ‰?? Multiple agencies responded this morning after a tractor trailer tanker ruptured and began leaking.
The Homeland Security District 6 Hazardous Materials Team comprised of Manchester Fire and Rescue, Tullahoma Fire and Rescue, and other agencies responded to a tractor trailer that was parked behind Mountain Top Chinese restaurant.
When they arrived, they saw the truck with a large hole in the side of the tanker. A ‰??shelter in place‰?? order was made for the immediate area while crews worked to contain the spill.
Officials say the chemical was ‰??Chlorobutane.‰??
No injuries were reported, and what caused the tanker to develop a large hole is under investigation.

An explosive gender reveal display has shaken a New Hampshire town and its surrounding community (literally).
With a reported 80 pounds of chemical substances, party hosts recognized a growing family, while unassuming people in the orbit of the blast have since given interviews to multiple news outlets.
Residents in Kingston, New Hampshire and nearby areas felt the effects of a massive blast on Tuesday, which multiple reports attributed to a gender reveal party. The explosion reportedly shook houses and buildings up to 20 miles away in parts of southeastern New Hampshire and neighboring Massachusetts. Some residents told local outlets it sounded like a bomb.
The explosion came from a quarry located in Kingston. Police told the New Hampshire Union Leader that a man detonated 80 pounds of Tannerite ‰?? an explosive that‰??s available for purchase over-the-counter. The man added in blue chalk for the big reveal.

A man inhaled a mixture of hazardous chemicals while working on a farm near Uttoxeter.
Firefighters were called to the farm off the B5027 in Field at 5.05pm on Thursday, April 22, after receiving reports that the man in his 20s had inhaled the chemicals and was suffering from the effects of it.
He had been cleaning out the dairy at the time.
It was found that the chemical mixture was low quality and the man was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a farm, off the B5027 in Field, near Uttoxeter, at about 5.05pm on Thursday.

FIRE AT CHEMICAL MANUFACTURING UNIT IN THERGAON

A chemical-manufacturing unit in Thergaon caught fire on Saturday afternoon, causing explosions that pressed panic buttons in the area for some time. No casualties were reported.
The fire broke out at the magnesium powder-manufacturing unit near the Pudumjee Paper Mill around 3.30 pm. It led to a few explosions. The impact was such that the walls of the unit collapsed and the noise of the explosions was heard from a few kilometres away.
On receiving information, a Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade team rushed to the spot. Fire brigade officials said workers of the powder-manufacturing unit were moved away from the spot to safety.
It was not possible for the fire fighters to extinguish the flames using water showers as burning magnesium explodes when mixed with water. So they used sand instead and poured it over the burning chemical-manufacturing unit using their equipment.

NEW DATABASE AMASSES TOXICITY STUDIES ON PFAS

first-of-its-kind database assembles hundreds of toxicology studies on 29 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The database is aimed at assisting communities exposed to PFAS contamination and helping policy makers access scientific literature on these substances, says Katherine E. Pelch, a professor at the University of North Texas School of Public Health. ‰??We‰??ve heard conflicting stories over how much data is available‰?? on the hazards of various PFAS, she tells C&EN. To help settle this issue, Pelch led a team that assembled the PFAS-Tox Database. The database contains the findings from peer-reviewed studies that identify toxicity or that document no significant adverse effects from exposure to specific PFAS or mixtures containing them, she says. The 29 chemicals in the database have been detected in people or the environment. They include commercial replacements for perfluoroå-octanoic acid and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, both once widely used. They also!
include fluorochemical industrial by-products such as Nafion by-product 2, which forms during the manufacture of Chemours‰??s Nafion sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene‰??based ionic polymers. Pelch and her colleagues plan to update the database regularly.

TIGHT EU REGULATION OF THREE SILOXANES RECOMMENDED

All uses of the cyclic methyl siloxanes D4, D5, and D6 should be tightly regulated, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) says in an April 14 recommendation.
Some uses of the three siloxanes, formerly ingredients in personal care and cleaning items, are already restricted in consumer products in the European Union. But some commercial applications of these substances remain, including use in the production of electronics and in closed dry cleaning systems, ECHA says.
All uses of the cyclic methyl siloxanes D4, D5, and D6 should be tightly regulated, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) says in an April 14 recommendation.
Next, the European Commission‰??the EU‰??s executive branch of government‰??along with the European Parliament and EU member states will consider the ECHA‰??s recommendation. If they adopt it, D4, D5, and D6 will be added to the authorization list under the EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) law. After that, companies would have to seek official authorization from the ECHA to use any of the compounds.

A Lee County Sheriff‰??s Office bomb squad went to a scene involving hazardous materials off US-41 in Bonita Springs Wednesday night, where Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District first responded during the late morning.
According to the fire district‰??s Facebook post, firefighters originally went to the scene at 11:45 a.m. to the plaza of a Rural King farm supply store off US-41 near the intersection with West Terry Street, where an accident happened inside a truck when roofing tar and muriatic acid combined to create noxious fumes that seeped into the receiving bay of the business.
Rural King managers and employees immediately evacuated the building and called 911.
Firefighters went to the scene and checked the building for toxic levels of acid with hazmat test strips and then wore their hazmat suits to mitigate the chemicals with absorbent.

RED RIVER PARISH, La. (KSLA) - An explosion occurred at ADA Carbon Solutions just west of Coushatta the afternoon of Thursday, April 22, the Red River Parish Sheriff‰??s Office reports.
Sources with knowledge of the situation say at least two people reportedly were burned.
At least 2 hurt when explosion rocks chemical plant outside of Coushatta
It is still an active scene at the plant in the 200 block of Red River Mine Road near Armistead.
Details about the explosion are slim.

Four persons were killed and 23 were injured, including fire service officials, in a fire at a building in Old Dhaka's Armanitola area early today.
Fire service officials rescued around 15 residents of the building including children and a pregnant woman on arrival, Abdul Halim said adding that locals and volunteers also managed to get several people out of the building through broken windows of different floors.

The fire broke out at a chemical storage on the ground floor of the six-storey building around 3:15am, said Brig Gen Md Sazzad Hussain, director general of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The firefighters managed to contain the blaze on the ground floor, said Abdul Halim. Most of the injured fell ill due to inhaling of smoke.

EXXON MOBIL PROPOSES HUGE CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE HUB

Once resistant to carbon reduction initiatives, ExxonMobil has unveiled a plan to build one of the world‰??s largest projects for carbon capture and storage (CCS) along the Houston Ship Channel in Texas. Likened by some to be the equivalent of dialysis for a planet, CCS involves stripping CO2 from industrial plant emissions‰??or from the air‰??and storing it in a secure underground location to prevent the gas from contributing to global warming.
The proposed project would cost $100 billion and would capture and store 100 million metric tons of CO2 per year. The emissions saved would be equivalent to removing 1 in every 12 cars on US roads, the company says. ExxonMobil is proposing to build infrastructure to capture its own CO2 emissions, as well as those from power plants, oil refineries, and chemical plants in the Houston area. The CO2 would be piped into a storage reservoir thousands of meters under the water in the Gulf of Mexico.
For the project to be economically viable, it would need major public funding and the introduction of a price on carbon in the US. ExxonMobil says the project could be fully operational by 2040.
‰??ExxonMobil believes, and experts agree, that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will need to play a critical role if the United States and other countries are to meet the emissions-reduction goals outlined in the Paris Agreement,‰?? Joe Blommaert, president of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, says in a statement.
