MARQUETTE, MI ‰?? A chemical used to extract THC from marijuana plants caused a fire that sent one person to the hospital in Michigan‰??s Upper Peninsula.
WLUC-TV reports that a 24-year-old Marquette man suffered burns in the fire, which occurred in a detached garage at Summit Street and Fitch Avenue in Marquette on Tuesday evening.
Police say the man was using a flammable chemical to extract THC from marijuana plants, which caused the flash fire.

A combination of increasing demand and a fire that closed a major chemical plant is likely to mean a shortage of swimming pool chlorine tablets and higher prices in the months ahead.
Rudy Stankowski, president and chief executive officer of Gainesville-based Aquatic Facility Training & Consultants, calls the situation in the pool industry a potential future "poolmageddon."
Jack Kidder, general manager of the Pinch A Penny Pool, Patio & Spa store off North Wickham Road in Melbourne, said pool owners are seeing an increase in prices for chlorine tablets that help sanitize pools.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) ‰?? Firefighters responded Thursday to a hazmat situation at a California Department of Transportation laboratory in East Sacramento.
The Sacramento Fire Department says it responded to a hazmat incident involving chemical vapors at the Caltrans Translab on Folsom Boulevard near 59th Street.
One person had to be taken to a hospital for minor respiratory irritation, according to the fire department.
The fire department says a hazmat team is working to remove the chemicals before anyone can reenter the building.

KARACHI:
A woman and her children were killed and five others were injured in an explosion that shook a residential building near Mosamyat Chowk on University Road on Tuesday morning.
Initial investigations suggest the explosion likely occurred due to a gas leakage.
The blast, which ripped through a pizza outlet located in the building ‰?? Crown Gardens, left the eatery and two neighbouring realtors' offices completely destroyed while three other shops were partially damaged.
Panic ensued and chaos reigned when the explosion occurred. The scale of the blast was such that a van of the K-Electric overturned and added to the casualties.
LPG cylinders, computers, fans and several other goods kept in the affected shops were blasted into the air. Besides, several cars parked in the vicinity were damaged by the debris.

When an airplane is coming in for a belly landing or has an engine on fire, the only way to prevent the entire plane from becoming engulfed in flames is by dousing the runway or the plane with fire-suppression foam.
Navy firefighters were trained in the use of this foam near the airplane runways at Alameda Point.
Over the past two decades, there has been one bad news story after another about the foam‰??s toxic ingredients contaminating drinking water.
These same toxic ingredients are also found in common consumer products. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that as many as 95 percent of the population have traces of these cancer-causing, endocrine-system-disrupting chemicals in their bodies.
That‰??s partly because consumer products with the same chemical compounds, such as water-repellant outdoor wear, carpets, food packaging, and even cosmetics, are still on the market.
Some household brand names that pioneered the marketing of products with the harmful chemicals, like Scotchgard and Teflon, have been reformulated and claim to be safe. Environmental advocacy groups like Earthjustice are not convinced.
As the science about the human health effects has become more compelling and public awareness so great, the military is now embarking on a cleanup program at active and former military bases, including Alameda Point.
In March, the Navy released a draft work plan to investigate soil and groundwater at the former firefighter training area at Alameda Point to determine the extent of the contamination and whether the chemicals are being released into the Oakland Estuary via tidal action.
The training area is located within a larger 14-acre cleanup area dubbed Site 14, which has already undergone groundwater cleanup of chlorinated solvents once stored there.

ENERGY MINISTRY, FIRE SERVICES AND OSHA PROBING NIQUAN EXPLOSION

A technical team from the Energy Ministry has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding an explosion at the NiQuan Energy gas-to-liquids plant in Pointe-a-Pierre.
The six-member team, led by Craig Boodoo, Senior Petroleum Engineer and Acting Head Petroleum Operations Management Division, will engage in a fact-finding mission to determine the contributing factors and root causes of the explosion.
The team is also tasked with reviewing the adequacy of existing controls and procedures and making recommendations which could reduce future risks and prevent recurrences.
The team will prepare a final report on completion of its investigation, which will be sent to Energy Minister Franklin Khan and other key stakeholders.
Its investigations have already begun.

Chemical safety agency The US Chemical Safety and Hazard Identification Board (CSB) announced that it is dispatching personnel to Yenkin-Majestic Paints manufacturing plant in Columbus, OH after an explosion and fire killed one person and injured eight others in the early hours of Thursday morning.
‰??According to initial reports, an explosion and two-alarm fire erupted at the paint plant around midnight on Thursday April 8th. Approximately forty employees were believed to be working on site at the time of the incident -- one of those employees was killed and eight were transported to area hospitals for injuries,‰?? the CSB wrote in a release. ‰??The blast shook neighboring buildings and at least one nearby business sustained damage.‰??
The agency said it will provide updates as information becomes available.
Emergency personnel were sent to the site after the explosion occurred and a two-alarm fire ignited at about midnight, Powder & Bulk Solids reported in an earlier story. Initial reports said one person was unaccounted for. The body of a 44-year-old worker was later recovered.

At least one person was unaccounted for and eight others were injured early Thursday following an explosion and massive two-alarm fire at a paint factory in Columbus, Ohio, according to reports.
The fire prompted area evacuations and sent firefighters scrambling to get the blaze under control, officials said.
Those injured included five people who were taken to hospitals after escaping the building on their own, the Columbus Division of Fire said in a statement.
However, two people were trapped inside the building and had to be rescued. They were in critical condition, officials said.
"Search and rescue efforts are continuing, as are extinguishment efforts at this time," the statement added.
