Does your college offer personal assistance for ADA students? I’ve seen ADA students who have a person with them in class to help them. Note taking is common. If the lab has space, possibly an upper classmen in your chemistry program could perform those particular tasks for the student until the prosthetic is fixed.

If your college doesn’t offer this benefit. Maybe you could find a pre-med or pre-pharmacy student wanting a volunteering opportunity as a resume builder. Preferably one that has already taken organic chem.

I know it’s better to have the student do the work themselves and develop the skills, but this would work until you find a fancier solution.

Thank you,

Subject: [DCHAS-L] lab help for student with prosthetic hand

Hi all,

A student's prosthetic hand has been damaged (not lab related) and unfortunately they now have very limited ability to grasp/steady items such as graduated cylinders, flasks, etc.  Does anyone know of some sort of countertop item that could help stabilize graduated cylinders and other "tippy" items?  I can imagine a few creative designs but I would rather have a commercial ADA-type product if possible.  I've done a small bit of online searching but no luck so far; I'm probably not using the correct search words.

Thanks

Pat
