From: Cardinal, Susan Next fall, August 22 - 26, at the ACS National Meeting & Exposition, the Division of Chemical Information will be presenting a symposium called Chemistry Babylon: Overcoming Language Barriers to Share Chemical Information, and we need a few speakers. Here is a description of the symposium: Chemical information has been and is expressed in many different languages. In fact, many American universities used to have language requirements (in Russian or German) for chemists in training. Asian language publications have increased significantly in recent years. Some companies have developed methods to translate non-English chemical names to structures. Others have developed automated language translation. In this symposium we will explore the roots of technical language translation, discuss services that support chemists whose primary language is not English and find out how close we are to a ‰??Universal Translator.‰?? The format will be 25 - 30 minute talks. The exact date and time of this half-day symposium has not yet been set. If you are interested in being one of the speakers, please submit an abstract by April 12th using the program link below. Feel free to contact us if you have questions.
