Highly flammable chemicals caught fire at a construction supply company on Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen Tuesday morning, authorities said.

North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue members responded to White Cap Construction Supply at 10:05 a.m. after two pallets of chemicals had caught fire inside the facility, NHRFR Chief Frank Montagne said. The facility‰??s sprinklers helped to keep the fire under control.

Montagne said the chemicals catching fire created a hazardous materials situation, and the Jersey City Fire Department Hazmat Unit was called in to assist. No workers or firefighters were injured in the incident, Montagne said.

SEATAC, Wash.. ‰?? A two-alarm fire, which completely destroyed a SeaTac auto service business, was preceded by a thunderous explosion, according to witnesses.
The fire began before noon Tuesday at Guru Auto Techs ‰?? which customizes Prius, according to its Facebook page ‰?? and caused towering flames to erupt from the building located in the 21200 block of International Boulevard.
People who work in nearby businesses told KIRO 7 the explosion and following fire were so intense that they could feel it through glass doors and windows across the street.

‰??It was a very big boom,‰?? said Michael Curry, who was blocks away from the building. ‰??I was at home when it broke out,‰?? he said. ‰??I heard a boom, and it made me look out the front door, and I saw a mushroom cloud.‰??
The people who work at Guru Auto Techs told us off camera there were six workers inside, and everyone was able to make it out unhurt. But the two-alarm fire was hard for even multiple fire departments to control. Multiple cars were burned around the building.

Around 7:30 a.m., the Visalia Fire Department Hazmat team was called to Kaweah Delta Medical Center to help with a patient who'd "accidentally ingested" organophosphate ‰?? widely used in insecticides.

Organophosphate is used in agriculture, home, gardens, and veterinary practice, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Three hospital staff were exposed to the chemical and suffered minor symptoms, Hughes said.

Once the Hazmat team and other fire units arrived, they were told hospital staff had already taken action. Those actions included the decontamination, isolation, and treatment of the patient and the isolation and treatment for the exposed emergency department staff.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is taking steps to address the hazards posed by dozens of barrels of radioactive waste mixed with incompatible chemicals, which have the potential to explode.

The lab is responding to a report in October by the federal Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, which found the lab had failed to analyze chemicals present in hundreds of containers of transuranic nuclear waste.

Incompatible chemicals could blend together and cause a container to burst, releasing a high level of radiation that would threaten workers and the public, the report said.

That‰??s what happened in 2014, when a waste container from the Los Alamos lab was packaged in a volatile blend of organic cat litter and nitrate salts, which caused the container to rupture and spew radiation at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad.

AS FOUNDATION FOOD GROUP PLANT CLEARS SOME INSPECTIONS, SOME WORKERS CONCERNED ABOUT RETURNING TO SITE OF DEADLY NITROGEN LEAK

As investigators have released the majority of the Foundation Food Group plant back to the company, advocates in the community say workers are concerned about returning to the workplace that saw six deaths and 12 total people hospitalized.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board told The Times Tuesday, Feb. 16 it had released the majority of the facility which experienced a liquid nitrogen leak Jan. 28.

‰??There is one area which the (chemical safety board) has asked the company to preserve,‰?? according to the chemical safety board. ‰??This area is known as the exclusion zone and the company is able to run the operation without impacting this part of the facility. It is now up to the company to determine their start-up plans.‰??

The chemical safety board said the exclusion zone is a single room that houses a two-stage nitrogen freezer.

‰??If you were to be working at an office or a warehouse or anywhere where your coworkers died in front of you, it‰??s completely understandable that even you or me would have reservations about returning to work,‰?? said Elliot Lepe, outreach paralegal with Southern Poverty Law Center.

WASHINGTON ‰?? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency‰??s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) should make changes to its systematic review process under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to ensure it is comprehensive, workable, objective, and transparent, says a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Recent changes to TSCA require EPA to establish a standard process for chemical risk evaluations and complete those evaluations under a strict timetable. OPPT‰??s 2018 document Application of Systematic Review in TSCA Risk Evaluations details the agency‰??s new standard approach for systematic reviews used in TSCA chemical risk evaluations. The committee that wrote the National Academies report reviewed this document and other materials to analyze OPPT‰??s approach.

The report recognizes OPPT‰??s challenge in meeting the strict statutory schedule for completing assessments, but says OPPT‰??s systematic review does not meet state-of-practice standards. It offers recommendations to improve the process

US DEPARTMENT OF LABOR‰??S OSHA ISSUES PROPOSED RULE TO UPDATE HAZARD COMMUNICATION STANDARD

Tags: us, public, discovery, environment

WASHINGTON, DC ‰?? The U.S. Department of Labor‰??s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today issued a proposed rule to update the agency‰??s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to align with the seventh revision of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

OSHA expects the HCS update will increase worker protections, and reduce the incidence of chemical-related occupational illnesses and injuries by further improving the information on the labels and Safety Data Sheets for hazardous chemicals. Proposed modifications will also address issues since implementation of the 2012 standard, and improve alignment with other federal agencies and Canada.

Individuals may submit comments identified by Docket No. OSHA-2019-0001, electronically at http://www.regulations.gov">http://www.regulations.gov, which is the Federal e-Rulemaking Portal. Read the Federal Register notice for details. The deadline for submitting comments is April 19, 2021.

OSHA has preliminarily determined that the proposed modifications would enhance the effectiveness of the standard by improving dissemination of hazard information so employees are more appropriately apprised of exposure to chemical hazards in the workplace.

A warning has been issued to the public after a barrel of potentially deadly phosphoric acid was washed up on a beach in Cornwall.

Crinnis Beach, Carlyon Bay, was cordoned off while firefighters clad in bright green hazmat suits made the site safe.

The drum of phosphoric acid, which can used in the manufacture of agricultural fertilisers and appears in minute amounts in the recipe for Coca-Cola but can be extremely dangerous in pure form, washed up onto the beach near St Austell during stormy weather on Sunday, February 14.

The source of the barrel remains a mystery.

The beach was closed to the public during the clean-up operation, and the barrel was handed over to a specialist contractor to be disposed of.
