Minimum Experience/Education Bachelor‰??s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.‰?¬Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Three to four years of progressive experience in safety systems in a University community environment.

Knowledge in specialized areas of environmental health sand safety to include; general occupational safety, chemistry and environmental safety.

Proficient knowledge in analyzing and problem-solving using available diagnostic techniques and equipment.

Experience with applying safety and training-related matters in a concise and accurate approach to the University mission and goals.

Familiarity with instructional theory, OSHA and NCDEQ, EPA, NC State of Human Resources, Office of State Fire Marshal, Dept. of Insurance and University administrative and safety guidelines.

Knowledge in electrical safety, Hazardous Material Technician (HAZMAT), Lock Out Tag Out, and Asbestos Awareness.

Required License or Certification

Primary Purpose of Position This position is primarily responsible for management of the University‰??s chemical inventory in accordance with the NCDEQ‰?? s regulations as well as federal EPA requirements in handling and disposal of all waste chemicals. Prepare and submit emissions calculations to comply with NCDEQ regulations for air permits. Ensure compliance to OSHA Hazard Communication and laboratory standards. Perform all related employee training. Monitor radiation and bio-safety conditions for compliance with federal standards. Maintain SDS database/files, removes waste from labs and takes to storage facility; consolidates waste for disposal.

Secondary responsibilities for this position include responding to after hour (on-call) safety-related situations. The position must effectively communicate regulations in a concise and accurate manner (i.e., EPA, OSHA, NCDEQ, OSFM and other Federal/State safety regulations). Completes duties in a responsible manner, establishes and recommends procedural changes to ensure safety standards and methods are applied, determines corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified. This position works with a diverse group including faculty, staff, students, the public as well as external agency representatives.
This position must manage sensitive matters in a professional manner.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit The purpose of the Environmental Health and Safety Office is to provide a variety of Environmental Health and Safety services to all administrative units, student programs and all academic schools and departments. Services include: risk assessment (hazard analysis; risk identification; loss control safety measures for the University), response to on-campus calls regarding fire alarm malfunctions, installation and service; and to reduce the actual loss of labor and equipment resources in the administration of services.

Work Hours 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; Monday - Friday; work on-call and respond to emergency call backs as necessary

Hiring Range: $41,903 - $52,379
