HUDDLESTON, Va. (WDBJ) - UPDATE: The Smith Mountain Lake Parkway is back open and the scene is clear after a hazmat cleanup Tuesday, according to the Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department.
EARLIER: Fire crews in Huddleston closed a portion of the Smith Mountain Lake Parkway Monday as they worked to clear a hazmat situation.
According to David Elliot, Assistant Chief with Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department, the parkway was closed from the intersection at Crab Orchard Road up to the intersection with Route 43, which is about a 2.6 mile stretch of road.
Elliot said a propane truck overturned and fell into a ditch. The State Department of Emergency Services has requested a regional response from the Roanoke and Salem hazmat teams.

Firefighters closed a section of road in Hsinchu County for three hours after a gas cylinder being transported from the Hsinchu Science Park caught fire while leaking highly volatile silane gas today, January 26.
The Hsinchu County Fire Bureau received a report that a gas cylinder on a truck was emitting flame, and thick, yellow smoke on Shuangyuan Road in Baoshan Township at 8:54 am.
Fire fighters sprayed water on the cylinder, while police closed pedestrian and vehicular traffic in both directions.
Personnel from Taiwan‰??s Environmental Protection Agency Toxic and Chemical Substances Bureau, and Hsinchu Science Park‰??s Environmental Safety Group were dispatched to the scene to assist and supervise operations.

Hazardous material teams were dispatched to an Ottawa highrise Monday night to clear out an airborne chemical that was causing breathing problems and eye irritations to residents, according to emergency response teams.
Residents of an apartment complex on Cambridge Street North called emergency services at 9:19 p.m. Monday night to report what they believed to be a kind of pepper spray in the hallway, a spokesperson for Ottawa Fire Services said Tuesday morning.
Firefighters arriving at the scene confirmed the presence of a ‰??chemical product‰?? in one hallway of the building, the spokesperson said.

This week, in a first, firefighters are demanding independent testing for cancer-linked chemicals known as PFAS in their gear and that their union drop sponsorships from chemical and equipment makers.
Every day at work for 15 years, Sean Mitchell, a captain in the Nantucket Fire Department, has put on the bulky suit that protects him from the heat and flames he faces on the job. But last year, he and his team came across unsettling research: Toxic chemicals on the very equipment meant to protect their lives could instead be making them gravely ill.
This week, Captain Mitchell and other members of the International Association of Fire Fighters, the nation‰??s largest firefighters‰?? union, are demanding that union officials take action. They want independent tests of PFAS, the chemicals in their gear, and for the union to rid itself of sponsorships from equipment makers and the chemical industry. In the next few days, delegates representing the union‰??s more than 300,000 members are expected to vote on the measure ‰?? a first.
‰??We‰??re exposed to these chemicals every day,‰?? Captain Mitchell said. ‰??And the more I looked into it, the more it felt like the only people who were saying these chemicals were safe were the people who make it.‰??
The demands come as the safety of firefighters has become an urgent concern amid the worsening effects of climate change, which bring rising temperatures that prime the nation for increasingly devastating fires. In October, two dozen firefighters in California ‰?? where a record 4.2 million acres burned across the state last year ‰?? filed suit against 3M, Chemours, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and other manufacturers, claiming that the companies for decades knowingly made and sold firefighting equipment loaded with toxic chemicals without warning of the chemicals‰?? risks.

Washington ‰?? Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and OSHA on Jan. 8 signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formally coordinate efforts amid EPA‰??s ongoing review of new chemicals under the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, which amended the Toxic Substances Control Act.
According to an EPA press release, the agencies have previously collaborated on workplace exposures to EPA‰??s review of new chemicals, as required under TSCA.
EPA states the MOU will advance that partnership and ‰??help achieve the agencies‰?? shared goal of ensuring workers are protected from potential health and environmental risks‰?? through measures including:
Establishing designated staff and management points of contact from EPA and OSHA to discuss and resolve workplace exposure issues related to EPA‰??s review of new chemicals.
Providing to OSHA regular updates on EPA‰??s new chemical determinations, including any necessary worker protections.
Documenting EPA‰??s role in identifying and informing OSHA of requisite formal consultation concerning EPA‰??s review of new chemicals.

PHOENIX - Some residents in a Phoenix apartment complex were forced to evacuate after a hazardous situation on Monday, Jan. 25. To make matters worse, they lost power.
Crews say a tree fell over and broke a gas line near 11th Avenue and Bell Road.
First, the residents were dealing with the intense weather the Valley experienced, then a hazardous situation call.
Hazmat trained firefighters and the gas company arrived on scene to secure the leak. Residents say the wind was extremely strong and they were worried about trees coming down.

SINGAPORE - An industrial gas supply firm was fined $340,000 while its managing director was fined $45,000 on Tuesday (Jan 26) for workplace safety lapses which led to a blast in 2015 that killed one employee and injured at least seven others.
....
The explosion, which ripped through Leeden National Oxygen's laboratory in Tanjong Kling Road near Pioneer Road, also left at least seven wounded.
On Dec 1 last year, the company and its managing director Steven Tham Weng Cheong, now 69, were each convicted of an offence under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.
The court heard that they had failed to take measures to ensure that unsafe modified regulatory valve assemblies (RVA) were not used when testing combustible gases.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ‰?? A 10-year-old boy was killed while five other persons were injured after a gas cylinder tank accidentally exploded outside a house in Norala town, South Cotabato on Sunday.

New Zealand‰??s significant ammonium nitrate stocks have been reviewed since an explosion killed 200 people in Beirut earlier this year.
The August 4 blast also wounded thousands and damaged a significant part of Beirut's port and central city.
It was fuelled by 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been stockpiled at an unsecured port warehouse for about six years. Lebanese authorities are still investigating the explosion.
Documents released by WorkSafe under the Official Information Act reveal five sites were identified as ‰??Upper Tier Major Hazard Facilities‰?? in New Zealand, each storing a significant amount of technical and fertiliser grade ammonium nitrate.
