When we have the Gen Chem students do this at UConn, they use tongs to hold the "catchment" tube. We also have them do it in a hood. I found that the student in a class to get the first pop tends to drop the tube because they are startled by the sound (all of the other students now familiar with the sound don't seem to have this problem). Doing it in the hood keeps the potential broken glass contained.
