Hi Jyllian,
 
I recommend using an ignition tube (a heavy wall rimless test tube) for this experiment as it can take the impact of a small explosion.  Test tubes with rims may have small chips that compromise their integrity.  A test tube clamp should be used to hold the test tube.  The reaction should be far away from the experimenter's face.
 
I always do this with a candle, or other flame, located on a bench or table top and move the inverted test tube to the flame.  That way the reaction is not near my face.

Hi all--I'd appreciate any thoughts on someone wearing just eye protection for this demo. On the one hand, it's a small amount and the test tubes don't have constricted necks. On the other hand, it looks like a glass tube held in bare hands near the face.
