FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fire crews spent hours Sunday morning battling a massive fire that included several explosions in west central Fresno.

The flames broke out at Highway 99 and Olive just after midnight.

By the time they got there, the flames had spread through a storage yard and caused several tanks of some sort of fuel to explode.

Crews called for a second-alarm and began an aggressive attack on the fire while working to keep nearby buildings safe.

"At that point, they went defensive, started evacuating all the nearby structures and hotels to protect everyone in the event that it spread faster," says Shane Brown with the Fresno Fire Department.

Firefighters kept the flames from damaging any nearby buildings or homes.

Hazmat teams are still on scene Sunday morning and cleaning up the damage left behind by the flames.

NORTH HAMPTON ‰?? Former state Rep. Mindi Messmer believes residents who live near the Coakley Landfill Superfund site should be concerned by detections of another PFAS contaminant in private wells.

‰??It is concerning because once again we have people exposed to a chemical that we have no enforceable standards for,‰?? Messmer said after perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA) was found in private wells near the landfill. ‰??Other states are taking steps to regulate PFOSA and New Hampshire needs to do the same.‰??

Messmer, a scientist and environmental activist, said that although there is no federal or state standard for PFOSA in water, residents need to be protected from the chemical.

‰??People should be prevented from exposure to chemicals we know are dangerous,‰?? Messmer said. ‰??We need to protect the people, not the chemicals.‰??

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY RAIL SYSTEMS SEE FREQUENT TRANSPORT OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Approximately 107 trains, often carrying hazardous materials, pass through Champaign County‰??s 225 miles of active rail lines each day. Freight traffic accounts for about 101 of these trains.

These freighters transport a variety of materials and goods, including various hazardous materials. The trains carrying at least 20 rail cars of flammable liquids are known as High Hazard Flammable Trains, usually carrying diesel fuel or crude oil.

Fire Lieutenant Brian Ball, hazardous materials officer at the Champaign County Fire Department, is not concerned about these trains.

‰?? ‰?|despite the large quantities [of hazardous materials], the known materials don‰??t concern me as we are afforded the opportunity to pre-plan and train for incidents involving those materials,‰?? said Lt. Ball, in an email.

NEW DELHI: The overburdened Forensics Science Laboratory in Rohini has started a new wing called Veera Centre to deal exclusively with explosives and seized firecrackers.
The new wing has the technology required for quick forensic examination of pyrotechnics, which has become necessary after the National Green Tribunal banned the sale and use of fireworks to check air pollution. The new unit has so far received 19 cases.
With NGT hearing numerous pleas seeking action against pollution caused by firecrackers in NCR, especially when the ill health effect of poor air exacerbates the intensity of Covid-19 infection, it was important to have a dedicated forensics unit that could carry out quick examinations for faster results.

JAPAN OPERATOR SAYS HUMAN ERROR CAUSED MAURITIUS OIL SPILL

TOKYO (AP) ‰?? The Japanese operator of a bulk carrier that struck a coral reef and caused an extensive oil spill off the coast of Mauritius said Friday that the accident occurred after the ship shifted its course two miles (3.2 kilometers) closer to shore than planned so its crewmembers could get cellphone signals.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines said its investigation showed the accident was caused by human error, including inadequate nautical charts, navigation systems and risk awareness, and a lack of supervision and safety monitoring.

The company said the tanker's nautical chart provided little information about depth and other necessary information. Crewmembers on duty also failed to conduct safety checks visually or by radar, it said.

The captain and crewmembers were also using their cellphones while on duty, the company said.

It said it will invest about 500 million yen ($4.8 million) to provide electronic nautical charts, training to strengthen safety culture and other systems to enhance safety.

The environmental disaster began July 25 when the ship MV Wakashio strayed off course and struck a coral reef a mile (1.6 kilometers) offshore. After being pounded by heavy surf for nearly two weeks, the ship‰??s hull cracked and on Aug. 6 began leaking fuel into a lagoon, polluting a protected wetlands area and a bird and wildlife sanctuary.
