One person injured as biosolids silo explodes at Avonmouth

An explosion at a wastewater treatment works in Avonmouth, UK, has left four workers dead and one more injured. Three of the dead were employees of Wessex Water, which runs the site, and the fourth was a contractor.

The explosion happened on 3 December, in a ‰??silo that holds treated biosolids before it is recycled to land as an organic soil conditioner‰??, according to a statement from Avon and Somerset Police. Wessex Water is working with the UK‰??s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to determine the cause of the blast, and ‰??will not be speculating on the cause of the explosion while such work is being undertaken‰??.

Several possibilities exist that could lead to this type of explosion, as outlined in a HSE report on the risks from sewage sludge drying plants. They include buildup of an explosive composition of methane and air within the silo, or a dust explosion if the material had been dried. The true cause of the incident should be revealed by the HSE‰??s investigation in due course.

LA PORTE, Texas (KTRK) -- A shelter-in-place order issued for residents in La Porte has been lifted after a chemical fire prompted the notice on Saturday afternoon.

The La Porte Fire Department responded to reports of an odor near 16th Street between Spencer Highway and Fairmont Parkway around 12:20 p.m.

Firefighters confirmed a fire occurred at Ameritech Heat Treating Services, Inc., located at 420 16th Street.

The shelter-in-place was issued for all areas in the city east of Sens Road and Bay Area Blvd due to large amounts of smoke in the area and uncertainty surrounding what may have caused the fire, authorities said.

Fire crews responded to a call of a chemical spill in Edmonton‰??s north side Saturday morning.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services received a report about a spill at a commercial building in the area of 126 Avenue and 156 Street just before 8:30 a.m. Fire officials say the spill happened as a result of overheating while mixing chemicals.

Fire officials say the company was attempting to cool the mixture by pouring water on the chemicals when it started to overflow into the parking lot. Fire crews, hazmat, drainage and Alberta Environment were all called in to assist.

Edmonton city police assisted with a road closure.

No injuries were reported and fire crews left the area soon after 12 p.m.

Fire officials were unable to say what the chemical was but described it as resin-like.

Hyderabad: Panic gripped residents of areas surrounding the Jawaharnagar dump yard when they heard an explosion from the heap of garbage here on Thursday. Nobody was hurt in the explosion, which was a minor one.

The incident triggered panic in the colony with residents fearing it was a bomb blast. On receiving information, the local police reached the spot apart from the CLUES team and Dog Squad. Samples were collected and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to identify the substance which led to the explosion. Officials denied it was a bomb.

‰??It was not a bomb. We suspect someone from a nearby workshop or chemical factory or automobile servicing centre has disposed the explosive material here. We are enquiring with local residents apart from examining footage from surveillance cameras in the surroundings,‰?? police said.

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old fireman died after he accidentally inhaled fumes of some hazardous chemical during a firefighting operation at a company in Navi Mumbai's Taloja early on Saturday, an official said.

The victim, Balu Ramu Deshmukh, belonged to the fire brigade from Ambarnath in Thane district, he said.

He was carrying out the firefighting operation along with others after a blaze erupted around 12.15 am at the company that manufactures material for pharmaceutical industry, the official said.

"Short circuit triggered the fire. As there was a huge stock of chemicals, including that of methanol, at the unit, the fire spread quickly. After being alerted, the personnel of fire brigades from Navi Mumbai, CIDCO, MIDC reached the spot," he said.

The fire brigade staff from Ambarnath also came to the site to help, the official added.

"However, during the firefighting operation Deshmukh inhaled fumes of a hazardous chemical, after which he complained of dizziness. He was then rushed to a private hospital in nearby Kamothe locality, where he died during treatment around 4.30 am," he said.
