ALLENTOWN, Pa. | Hazmat teams responded to an unknown spill in Jordan Creek on Thanksgiving morning.

The Allentown and Lehigh County hazmat teams were called to the creek near Gordon Street Bridge off American Parkway, said Chief James Wehr, of the Allentown Fire Department.

The teams placed booms, otherwise known as an absorbent, to soak up and contain the unknown chemical spilled in the creek.

Wehr says the hazmat teams are still investigating what caused the spill, and what substance the spill was.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said as of Thursday afternoon, the Lehigh County hazmat team determined it was caused by a motor vehicle accident Wednesday evening.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The fire that closed northern Kentucky‰??s Brent Spence Bridge started after two tractor trailers collided early on November 11. Officials have said the fire ‰??burned intensely‰?? in part because a truck that struck a jack-knifed semi was carrying potassium hydroxide.

That chemical is considered a hazardous material, according to federal rules that govern potentially flammable and caustic cargo.

In 2013, federal documents show, Kentucky designated Interstate 75 north of I-275 as a route where shipments of all hazardous materials are forbidden. That stretch of I-75 includes the lower section of the double-decked Brent Spence Bridge, according to official maps.

The designation remains listed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ‰?? the only such restriction in the state.

Yet it‰??s not common knowledge, even among large trucking groups whose members include companies that move such materials. Top officials with the Kentucky Trucking Association and the Ohio Trucking Association said this week they were not aware of any such restricted routes in Kentucky.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTWO/WAWV) ‰?? Glas-Col, a Terre Haute-based business since the 1930s, was inducted into the Indiana Manufacturers Association‰??s (IMA) Hall of Fame during the annual Hall of Fame Inductions and Manufacturing Excellence Awards event held virtually earlier this month.

The honor was announced Wednesday by Katie Shane, Director of Membership Development and Communications for the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce.

Glas-Col manufactures laboratory products for science and industry. In addition to products used for heating, mixing, evaporation and air purification, they also manufacture instruments and controls.
....
Like many companies, Glas-Col was born out of a need for a better system. In 1939, the founder was injured in a laboratory fire when heating chemicals over an open flame. In his spare time, he and his wife developed the heating mantle, still the standard in laboratory heating to this day.

The Williams Lake Salvation Army was briefly evacuated Wednesday, Nov. 25 to vent fumes following a chemical reaction.

Williams Lake Fire Chief Erick Peterson said six members responded to safely inspect and ventilate the building shortly after 11 a.m. when an employee reported strong chemical odors.

Tamara Robinson of the Salvation Army later clarified to the Tribune the incident happened after a plumber used their own chemical to deal with a clogged toilet.

‰??(The staff) took immediate action to reduce risk to clients and staff, called proper authorities to rectify the issue,‰?? Robinson noted, adding her staff are fully trained with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS).
