PEORIA (WEEK) -- Peoria firefighters responding to a report of a carbon monoxide alarm at a Peoria gas station instead found a leak of carbon dioxide.

The incident happened after 11 a.m. Thursday at the MacDonald Shell at 4709 North Sterling.

A release from the fire department says firefighters put on their self-contained breathing apparatus before entering the building to determine the cause of the alarm.

The inside of the store was searched for the cause of the leak while other firefighters shut off the carbon dioxide tank outside the building connected to the soda fountain.

The fire station commander at the scene on Mill Street told the Worcester News the material was chlorine thought to have spilled from the pool inside King's St Alban's.

He said: "There has been an accidental release of chlorine from the swimming pool area of the King's school. Three fire engines and two environmental agency workers are at the scene along with ambulances and police.

"We are putting together a plan of action to disperse the gas now and will remain at the scene until the gas is dispersed. Residents have been advised to close windows and doors as chlorine is a nasty chemical and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes."

Headteacher Gareth Doodes added: "‰??We had a suspected chemical spill contained within the plant room at our swimming pool.

The People‰??s Bank of China in November has refrained from using tools to limit the yuan‰??s advance, even as the currency heads for the longest run of monthly gains in six years. That‰??s a reversal from last month, when authorities made it cheaper to bet against the yuan and eased some control over the exchange rate, moves that were interpreted as part of Beijing‰??s effort to rein in appreciation.

One theory points to evidence that the rallying yuan isn‰??t actually hurting Chinese exporters. Demand is surging globally for everything from hazmat suits to medical instruments, in large part produced in China. A gauge measuring the country‰??s outbound cargo prices soared to the highest level in six years this month, according to data from the Shanghai Shipping Exchange. In October, China‰??s export rose at the fastest pace since early 2019, beating estimates.
