When chemistry PhD student Shiva Dastjerdi burned herself in a lab accident, she assumed her school would cover her medical bills. Isn‰??t that what employers do? As it turns out, university policies about workers‰?? compensation don‰??t always include graduate students. Interviews with students, professors, university officials, and lawyers across the US reveal that whether graduate students are considered employees‰??and are thus eligible for workers‰?? compensation‰??is far from clear. Consequently, when accidents happen, they can leave students recovering from significant injuries while facing huge medical bills. And PhD students may not have any idea.

SOUTH JORDAN ‰?? One man was critically injured Saturday due to an explosion inside a home where federal agents found approximately 20 pounds of highly explosive materials and partially made bombs over the summer.
Emergency crews were called to 3371 W. Snow Moon Place about 4 p.m. Saturday on a report of an explosion and possible fire.
‰??The first arriving firefighters located an adult male in critical condition with lower leg injuries,‰?? South Jordan fire said in a prepared statement.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital.
No fire was found. But due to the home‰??s history, South Jordan police, agents from the FBI and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as bomb squads from West Valley City and the Unified Fire Authority were called to the scene.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. ‰?? A chemical leak at the Hexion chemical plant in Springfield shut down Second Street early Sunday.
The roads are back open now.
Fire crews told us a few people were transported to the hospital for evaluations, but there were no serious injuries.
Officials said it was a hazardous chemical which resulted in a full hazmat response.

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) - A hazmat situation reported Saturday at the South Point Water Plant has been contained.
Officials with the South Point Fire Dept. say they and several other agencies including the Lawrence County Hazmat Team responded to the call.
Mayor Jeff Gaskin says a leaky fitting on the chlorine tank. Gaskin says the air was quickly cleared and the leak fixed.
Fire crews say no injuries were reported.

Nov. 4, 2000, 10:28 p.m., a connecting pin sheared on a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train, causing a coupler to fall to the tracks, resulting in a derailment in northwest Scottsbluff near the Avenue I crossing.
The derailment resulted in the spillage of about 80,000 gallons of the chemical benzene and an immediate evacuation of most of the city. After residents were allowed to go back home the next morning, though toxicologists recommended a second evacuation of a smaller portion of town.
Looking back, Mark Harris, Scottsbluff mayor at the time, said the evacuation process is what he regrets about the decisions the city made in the hours following the derailment.
‰??When we made the decision to let people know that they could go home, we made it with the information we had, but in retrospect, yeah, I wish we wouldn‰??t have done that,‰?? Harris said. ‰??In the overall scheme of things, that‰??s the thing I was most disappointed with. Beyond that, I thought things ultimately ended up as good as we could have hoped for.‰??
The initial response to the derailment fell in the hands of the Scottsbluff Fire Department and emergency management coordinators. Troy Shoemaker, now chief of the Alliance Fire Department, was Scottsbluff‰??s hazardous materials coordinator at the time.

BMC TO FLOAT WEATHER BALLOONS TO DETECT GAS LEAKS

The BMC has decided to install weather balloons at key locations in the eastern suburbs, where three incidents of foul smell similar to gas leaks have been reported by residents in the past six months. Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said these balloons won‰??t be permanent and will be floated whenever there are specific complaints. Air samples from these balloons can be tested for specific substances ranging from sewage emissions to gas from pipelines and leaks from chemical factories.
Kakani said the fire brigade has been instructed to procure and install the equipment at the affected locations in Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Govandi, Bhandup, Chembur, Mulund and Powai. The fire brigade will also operate and monitor them. He said the technology will help find both the cause and the source of gaseous smell.
A weather balloon is also known as a sounding balloon. It primarily comprises a battery-powered telemetry instrument called radiosonde that records various atmospheric parameters ‰?? pressure, temperature, humidity and wind speed ‰?? and sends them to a ground receiver. It can collect air samples, too.

The Office of the Attorney General has taken action against additional defendants in its lawsuit to hold manufacturers and distributors of foams that contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as ‰??forever chemicals," liable for the harmful effects of their product, according to a released statement.
The chemicals have been linked to adverse health effects such as infertility, birth defects, and an increase in the risk of certain cancers.
News:Guam Department of Education will add food to meal bundles
Although the chemicals have not been detected in Guam‰??s drinking water, several water wells have tested above the Environmental Protection Agency‰??s health advisory levels and two wells have been rendered inoperable.
The Office of the Attorney General sued eight companies last year alleging that they engaged in false, misleading and deceptive acts about the risks posed by their products.

GRAPEVINE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) ‰?? Two workers were hurt after a chemical spill inside a Grapevine warehouse Friday, Oct. 30.
It happened after 8:00 p.m. at Kurita America on Westport Parkway near State Highway 360.
Grapevine Fire Chief Darrell Brown told CBS 11 workers were mixing chemicals when some spilled.
One worker suffered chemical burns and another had breathing problems from the fumes.
Both were taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not thought to be serious.

PORT NECHES, Texas ‰?? New information is being released about the explosion at the TPC plant in 2019.
The Chemical Safety Board released a new 13-page report detailing the timeline and what led up to the TPC explosion.
Nearly a year later, an attorney is calling this report a step forward.
Federal officials said about 6,000 gallons of liquid vapor, mostly butadiene escape one of the processing towers at the TPC plant in Port Neches. Two minutes later, the plant was on fire.
While the investigation into the explosion is not over, the report summarizes what happened before and after the explosion.
Once the investigation comes to an end, TPC will take actions to address any of the Chemical Safety Board's concerns, a TPC spokesperson said in a statement.
