There have been three gas leaks at Lafayette High School this semester due to old equipment and hurricane-force winds, according to district officials.

The first gas leak at the school was discovered Sept. 30 on building 500, said Kyle Bordelon, director of planning and facilities for the Lafayette Parish School System.

"This is the pipe elbow that was leaking," Bordelon told board members at a meeting Wednesday night, holding up a piece of metal pipe for them to see. "It is where the gas pipe went up the side of the building, turned over the roof and fed some rooftop heating units. It has been replaced."

The second gas leak this semester was found in the cafeteria Oct. 1.

"It was an old stove and oven combination that has since been removed from the campus in its entirety, and a new unit is on order," Bordelon said.

A hazmat crew responded to a leak Sunday night at an industrial cleaning company building in Philadelphia.

Officials told NBC10 an unknown liquid began leaking in the basement of the National Chemical Laboratories building on 401 North 10th Street. There was also a broken steam pipe inside the building.

A hazmat crew set up a staging area along the 1000 block of Callowhill Street and are currently investigating. No injuries have been reported.

An enormous mound of mulch caught fire Sunday morning at Florida Recyclers of Brevard in Melbourne, sending a large plume of smoke billowing skyward off Sarno Road throughout the day.

The grayish smoke plume was clearly visible around Orlando Melbourne International Airport and surrounding neighborhoods.

Officials at Florida Recyclers of Brevard declined comment.

The mulch blaze was reported about 9:30 a.m., and two fire engines reported to the scene, said Cheryl Mall, city spokeswoman.

Breezy conditions helped fan the flames. The National Weather Service forecast called for a northeast wind of 15 to 20 mph Sunday afternoon in Melbourne, with gusts reaching as high as 25 mph.

Six workers suffocated on Saturday while trying to clean a chemical tank of a garment company‰??s factory near Naurus Chowrangi in the SITE Industrial Area.

After receiving information that some workers were trapped in a chemical tank, police and rescue workers from different welfare organisations arrived at the factory and took the six victims to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

Their bodies were later taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where a medico-legal officer examined them and confirmed that the six workers had suffocated. Police said that the tank of the garment factory was

full of chemicals and the workers had been trying to clean it when they lost consciousness.

They added that according to their preliminary investigation, the six workers had suffocated due to a poisonous gas because the tank contained a chemical substance.

Officials said that the tank was approximately 50 feet deep and it was half filled with chemicals, adding that one worker had initially climbed down the tank to clean it, but he fell unconscious there.

Emergency personnel were called to the Gardner Fields asphalt plant on Sunday morning when 70 tons of liquid asphalt caught fire in storage silos. The fire began around 4:00 am and it set off a series of explosions that released toxic chemicals into the air.

Investigators believe that a mechanical failure in a supply line and valve between several storage tanks are to blame, but they are still unsure how the fire started.

The burning asphalt may have released dangerous chemicals into the air, and local residents were advised to stay indoors for a few hours, but nobody was reportedly injured by the accident.

VENICE, Fla. ‰?? The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office on Friday released more information following an explosion and massive fire at a garage in Venice.

Thursday afternoon, deputies said they were called out to a home on Sunset Beach Drive for a report of an explosion. When they got there, they talked to the property owner, Paul Horvat, and his friend, Neil Cameron, who were both in the detached garage.

Both men were burned and said they had been reloading ammunition. Horvat then said the gun powder was continuing to flare up.

Deputies said the detached garage was filled with smoke and firefighters told both men to leave the building. Both were airlifted to Blake Medical Center for treatment of serious burns.
