An Australian man and his British colleague working to map unexploded bombs across Solomon Islands have been killed in an explosion at their home in the capital Honiara.
Australian Trent Lee and Briton Stephen ‰??Luke‰?? Atkinson died when an unexploded ordnance is believed to have detonated shortly after 7.30pm on Sunday.
The blast, inside the men‰??s rented accommodation in Tasahe, in the west of the city, was felt more than five kilometres away: cries for help from inside brought rescuers and emergency services to the building.
Several other unexploded bombs were found inside the apartment according to police inspector Clifford Tunuki. He said police did not know bombs were being brought back to a residential area and were ‰??concerned that they decided to conduct explosive ordnance disposal operations within a residential area‰??.
The residence is a crime scene, he said.
The two men were employees of the NGO Norwegian People‰??s Aid (NPA), which maps unexploded ordnance across Solomon Islands, working alongside the police bomb disposal unit.

CHIPATA CENTRAL FIRE ACCIDENT WORRIES PRESIDENT LUNGU

President Edgar Lungu is concerned with the fire accident which occurred at Chipata Central Hospital on Friday.
Ministry of Health permanent secretary for administration Kakulubelwa Mulalelo has said President Lungu has since directed that remedial measures should be put in place to avert such occurrences.
Ms Mulalelo said this when she toured Chipata Central Hospital on Saturday to assess the extent of the damage caused by fire.
‰??The President has been notified of the inferno that was here and he has expressed concern, hence he directed a quick response and that remedial measures be put in place so that we avert such an occurrence. I am here basically to lead a technical team that shall work with you (hospital authorities) to map out what occurred and come up with remedial measures and a preventive maintenance plan so that we do not have a re-occurrence,‰?? she said.
Ms Mulalelo commended the hospital staff and other stakeholders for working hard in putting out the fire on Friday night.
‰??What we intend to do is to work with the Ministry of Works and Supply as we carry out our work as part of the one government approach. We note that the power bank room is where the fire did take place and that some equipment was lost and we are very happy that the team did respond and that there were no lives that were lost,‰?? she said.
Part of the laboratory department at the hospital was gutted by an inferno on Friday night.
A quick response by hospital staff and Chipata fire brigade prevented the fire from extending to other parts of the hospital.
The microbiology section of the laboratory department was extensively damaged.

Sept 19, Colombo: The Marine Environment Protection Authority states that the laboratory reports of the analysis of oil samples from the MT New Diamond oil tanker ship have been submitted to the Attorney General.
Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority Dharshani Lahadapura said that the laboratory report of the oil samples obtained from the location of the fire-stricken oil tanker submitted by the Government Analyst has been forwarded to the Attorney General Dappula de Livera Saturday (19).
She also said divers were still checking to see if there were any holes in the ship, which is now located about 90 nautical miles off the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
MT New Diamond oil tanker carrying 270,000 metric tons of crude and another 1700 metric tons of diesel caught fire on 3rd September in the seas about 38 nautical miles off Sangamankanda Point in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
A combined effort of Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force and Indian defense forces battling for six days put out the fire completely on 9 September. However, the damage to the engine room has caused the diesel from the ship to leak leaving kilometers long oil slicks.

BOUNTIFUL, Utah (ABC4 News) ‰?? A tanker rollover in Bountiful closed 500 south for several hours early Saturday morning.
According to South Davis Metro Fire, 500 south is closed in all directions between 700 west and 800 west after a pup (smaller tanker) rolled.
Authorities said there were no injuries but hazmat teams are on scene containing a fuel spill.
No estimated time of opening 500 south, the gasoline in the pup tanker have to be offloaded into another tanker before it can be uprighted.

A major hazmat spill has shut down County Route 539, between Route 72 to the south and Lincoln Boulevard to the north, in Lacey Township, and News 12 has confirmed the accident is fatal.
The accident happened just before 6 a.m.
News 12 is told a dump truck and vehicle collided. A fire broke out, and up to 60 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway. At least one person is dead.

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Reno Fire Department responded to a chemical spill Friday, resulting in the closure of several streets near St. Mary‰??s Hospital.
The spill is contained and there is no danger to the public, officials said.
It was reported just before 11 a.m. September 18, 2020 at 343 Elm Street which is St. Mary‰??s Surgical Center.
Officials said services at St. Mary‰??s Hospital were unaffected. Nearby roads were shut down for about two hours but have since reopened.

Forestdale, Ala. ‰?? The ABC 33/40 I-Team is working to uncover the kinds of chemicals that Forestdale residents have been breathing since the end of May.
The chemicals are in the debris that‰??s been burning underground at an illegal dump in the middle of a neighborhood.
GASP Executive Director Michael Hansen set up a monitor on a Forestdale resident‰??s deck at our request.
‰??This tube is collecting the chemicals that are in the air. We‰??ll send it to the lab and get an analysis done,‰?? Hansen said.
