A gas leak in Kingsville, which prompted town officials to declare a partial state of emergency, is causing headaches for residents and businesses.
Since early Sunday morning, the Kingsville Fire Department has been at the scene of a convenience store and gas bar at Essex County roads 20 and 23, along with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Windsor Fire and Rescue Service HAZMAT team ‰?? but they've hit some snags in their cleanup effort, and it's unclear when the intersection will reopen.
"There's a larger issue than we they originally thought," said Andrew Plancke, Kingsville's director of municipal services, one day after homes and businesses within 500 metres of the scene were evacuated.
Town officials said they thought the leak would be a quick cleanup but it's turned into a bit of a mystery. Fuel is leeching into the ground and they are not sure where it is coming from.

CONYERS ‰?? Rockdale Fire and Rescue firefighters were expected to keep watch at the scene of a BioLab chemical fire throughout the day Tuesday after fire broke out in a warehouse early Monday morning.
Fire Chief Dan Morgan said firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 6 a.m. Monday. Although the chemical that caught fire was stabilized by mid-afternoon, Morgan said firefighters continued to work the scene until about 6 p.m.
‰??It was very stabilized with very few fumes coming out at that point,‰?? said Morgan. ‰??We had the (Environmental Protection Division) all around the area monitoring the air, and they were getting very low readings, if any, so we felt good about that.‰??
Morgan said a couple of crews and an engine were stationed at BioLab overnight Monday to watch for any further chemical reactions.
No serious injuries were reported as a result of the fire, although Morgan said nine firefighters were taken to the hospital emergency room for treatment of chemical inhalation. He said they were treated and released by 5:30 Monday evening. Morgan explained that a brief rain storm Monday afternoon caused a wind shift, which pushed a plume of chemical smoke across an area where firefighters were resting or changing out their gear.
‰??From actual firefighting and being in the building and in contact with the chemical, we had no injuries,‰?? said Morgan ‰?? ‰?| Just as a precaution we sent them to the ER to have them checked out.‰??
Morgan said the cause of the chemical fire is not known at this time. He said when firefighters arrived at BioLab early Monday morning, several pallets of the dry chemical were on fire. He said the fire was ‰??popping from pallet to pallet as they got hot enough to ignite.‰??

'FOREVER CHEMICAL' RESEARCH DELAYED DUE TO COVID-19, PENTAGON SAYS

Research into a new safer firefighting chemical for the U.S. military has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, said a high ranking member of the Department of Defense (DOD) on Tuesday at a hearing before the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Readiness.
The U.S. military has been using a fire retardant foam which includes chemicals called PFAS, which have been linked with causing cancer in humans. Other items that include PFAS include some non-stick cookware, cleaning products and water repellents. PFAS are known as "forever chemicals" because when they enter the human body, they are not expelled. Many areas, especially around military bases, have found PFAS in their water supply. The DOD has been attempting to develop PFAS-free firefighting foam but when the new technology will be available for widespread usage is still unknown.
"It's too early to answer that question," said Herb Nelson, Director of the Defense Department's Strategic Environment Research and Development Program. "We're just getting started. Normally, on this day, I could give you some early indicators, but like everyone else on this Earth, they've really taken a delay because of the COVID situation."

PHOENIX ‰?? Three people were injured by a chemical explosion at a research lab at Arizona State University in Tempe on Tuesday.
Tempe Fire Department Assistant Chief Andrea Glass told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the explosion was caused by chlorine dioxide, which resulted in a workbox becoming overpressurized.
A third-party contractor was conducting a routine cleaning of the Biodesign Institute lab at the time.
‰??This was a standard procedure that they utilize to prepare a research lab for the next project that was coming in,‰?? Glass said.
Three people were treated at the scene with skin lacerations and punctures from the incident. Two of victims, a 50-year-old male and a 27-year-old male, were transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

TWO COMPANIES CITED OVER THURSDAY'S PUNGENT CHEMICAL SPILL IN COMPTON

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has cited a land developer and contractor over a chemical spill in the Compton area last week that caused thousands of complaints of a pungent smell across a large area of Los Angeles and Orange counties.
Bridge Point Gardena Land LLC and contractor OFRS Inc. were cited for causing a public nuisance in violation of rules concerning the release of air contaminants.
If no settlement is reached, the two companies could be subject to civil penalties or a lawsuit.
The spill occurred Thursday at a job site when they attempted to move a small storage tank containing mercaptan, a pungent chemical added to natural gas to help with leak detection.
Fire officials said the site was an abandoned oil field near South Main Street and Rosecrans Avenue in an area near Compton.

AURORA FIRE RESCUE RESPONDS TO REPORT OF CHEMICAL SPILL AT GAYLORD ROCKIES RESORT

A loading dock at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center was evacuated Monday afternoon as Aurora Fire Rescue crews and the South Adams County hazardous materials team investigated a spill that sent one person to the hospital.
Fire Lt. Ben Pfeiffer said employees at the Aurora resort reported that chemicals had spilled into some of the drains. A loading dock on the north side of the resort was evacuated as crews cleaned up the hazard.
The chemical was sodium hypochlorite, Aurora Fire Rescue said in a tweet a little after 5 p.m. The dock was turned back to the Gaylord staff.
One person who was feeling ill was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two others were treated at the scene.

A woman is dead and ten people are injured, including six paramedics and three firefighters, in a chemical spill involving hazardous materials in Mississauga, Peel police and firefighters say.
One of the injured is a civilian whose injuries were considered serious. The person has been taken to a local hospital, Peel police said on Sunday.
The paramedics and firefighters were being treated as a precaution, according to Const. Akhil Mooken, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police.
According to Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, the chemical spill happened inside a home near Mavis Road and White Clover Way. Firefighters were called to the house at 6:11 p.m. on Saturday.
Platoon Chief Ryan Baird told CBC Toronto that the call was initially for a medical emergency, but it turned into a chemical spill. The substance came from inside the house and was contained to the house, he said.
Baird said the substance that was spilled is still being investigated and he could not say what or how much was spilled.

(MENAFN - Jordan Times) AMMAN ‰?? An explosion that rocked the northeastern city of Zarqa early Friday was caused by a chemical reaction inside a shell in a warehouse containing unusable mortar shells, according to the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF).
No injuries were reported, only minor material damage to some old machinery, according to officials.
Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh said that the explosion occurred at a Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) warehouse containing unusable mortar shells.
He said that initial investigations pointed to a short circuit in the warehouse, located in the Ghabawi area, east of Zarqa, in an isolated and uninhibited area.
However, the army announced that the explosion was due to a chemical reaction in one of the mortars, caused by an increase in temperatures due to the heatwave currently impacting the Kingdom.

Seven people were hospitalized, including five law enforcement officers and a tow truck driver, after coming into contact with a chemical at the scene of a collision on the Golden Gate Bridge Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The incident began after someone was spotted driving erratically on the Golden Gate Bridge, said a California Highway Patrol spokesperson. A Lexus was seen scraping the center barrier before coming to a stop just before noon.
Officers responded to the scene where one of them entered the vehicle in an attempt to turn the ignition off and found the driver unconscious and blue in the face.

New Westminster Fire Chief Tim Armstrong tells Global News they received a call around 8 p.m. about a brush fire that had started along Front Street near the Skytrain bridge.
‰??Upon arrival, crews saw it had gotten into the decking on the old creosote wharf,‰?? said Armstrong, ‰??and quickly spread through the wharf‰?| about six to eight hundred feet of waterfront fully involved.‰??
The fire began spreading west from there, said Armstrong.
Armstrong said that it was too dangerous to put crews on the wharf, and they needed some tugs and a Vancouver fire boat to get at the fire burning beneath the pier.
‰??Well, the biggest thing is access‰?| (getting beneath the pier deck) is the only way to fight it. We‰??ve got creosote pilings with creosote decking. You‰??ve got asphalt on top of that. Then you‰??ve got sand for the volleyball pits on top of that. So it‰??s free burning underneath there, probably 200, 250 feet. So it‰??s all free burning. There‰??s no way to really access it without penetrating the top of it and getting underneath it that way.‰??

Sept. 19 marks 10 years since retired US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the national incident commander in charge of the Deepwater Horizon response, announced that the spill was over. Although workers had capped the well on July 15, it wasn‰??t until mid-September that the drilling of the relief well was completed. Cement pumped in through this secondary well permanently sealed the petroleum reservoir.
In the years since the blowout, scientists have studied many aspects of the spill. They‰??ve tried to measure its ongoing environmental and public health impacts. They‰??ve attempted to catalog the natural processes by which the oil transformed and degraded. They‰??ve continued to debate the injection of chemicals called dispersants near the site of the blowout and whether the benefits outweighed the risks. And as funds for researching the disaster have waned, researchers hope to apply the lessons they‰??ve learned to prepare for the next major spill.
