A woman is dead and ten people are injured, including six paramedics and three firefighters, in a chemical spill involving hazardous materials in Mississauga, Peel police and firefighters say.

One of the injured is a civilian whose injuries were considered serious. The person has been taken to a local hospital, Peel police said on Sunday.

The paramedics and firefighters were being treated as a precaution, according to Const. Akhil Mooken, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police.

According to Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, the chemical spill happened inside a home near Mavis Road and White Clover Way. Firefighters were called to the house at 6:11 p.m. on Saturday.

Platoon Chief Ryan Baird told CBC Toronto that the call was initially for a medical emergency, but it turned into a chemical spill. The substance came from inside the house and was contained to the house, he said.

Baird said the substance that was spilled is still being investigated and he could not say what or how much was spilled.

(MENAFN - Jordan Times) AMMAN ‰?? An explosion that rocked the northeastern city of Zarqa early Friday was caused by a chemical reaction inside a shell in a warehouse containing unusable mortar shells, according to the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF).

No injuries were reported, only minor material damage to some old machinery, according to officials.

Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh said that the explosion occurred at a Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) warehouse containing unusable mortar shells.

He said that initial investigations pointed to a short circuit in the warehouse, located in the Ghabawi area, east of Zarqa, in an isolated and uninhibited area.

However, the army announced that the explosion was due to a chemical reaction in one of the mortars, caused by an increase in temperatures due to the heatwave currently impacting the Kingdom.

Seven people were hospitalized, including five law enforcement officers and a tow truck driver, after coming into contact with a chemical at the scene of a collision on the Golden Gate Bridge Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The incident began after someone was spotted driving erratically on the Golden Gate Bridge, said a California Highway Patrol spokesperson. A Lexus was seen scraping the center barrier before coming to a stop just before noon.

Officers responded to the scene where one of them entered the vehicle in an attempt to turn the ignition off and found the driver unconscious and blue in the face.

New Westminster Fire Chief Tim Armstrong tells Global News they received a call around 8 p.m. about a brush fire that had started along Front Street near the Skytrain bridge.

‰??Upon arrival, crews saw it had gotten into the decking on the old creosote wharf,‰?? said Armstrong, ‰??and quickly spread through the wharf‰?| about six to eight hundred feet of waterfront fully involved.‰??

The fire began spreading west from there, said Armstrong.

Armstrong said that it was too dangerous to put crews on the wharf, and they needed some tugs and a Vancouver fire boat to get at the fire burning beneath the pier.

‰??Well, the biggest thing is access‰?| (getting beneath the pier deck) is the only way to fight it. We‰??ve got creosote pilings with creosote decking. You‰??ve got asphalt on top of that. Then you‰??ve got sand for the volleyball pits on top of that. So it‰??s free burning underneath there, probably 200, 250 feet. So it‰??s all free burning. There‰??s no way to really access it without penetrating the top of it and getting underneath it that way.‰??

WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM THE DEEPWATER HORIZON DISASTER?
https://cen.acs.org/safety/industrial-safety/learn-Deepwater-Horizon-disaster/98/i35
Tags: industrial, discovery, environmental, petroleum

Sept. 19 marks 10 years since retired US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the national incident commander in charge of the Deepwater Horizon response, announced that the spill was over. Although workers had capped the well on July 15, it wasn‰??t until mid-September that the drilling of the relief well was completed. Cement pumped in through this secondary well permanently sealed the petroleum reservoir.

In the years since the blowout, scientists have studied many aspects of the spill. They‰??ve tried to measure its ongoing environmental and public health impacts. They‰??ve attempted to catalog the natural processes by which the oil transformed and degraded. They‰??ve continued to debate the injection of chemicals called dispersants near the site of the blowout and whether the benefits outweighed the risks. And as funds for researching the disaster have waned, researchers hope to apply the lessons they‰??ve learned to prepare for the next major spill.

Vivian Nunez says a sense of panic runs through her body when she hears the pipes rumble behind the wall of her South Lawrence home.

Other times, it‰??s the smell of burning food or the low growl of her boiler switching on in winter that sends Nunez back in time to Sept. 13, 2018.

That‰??s when gas explosions erupted in communities across the Merrimack Valley that killed one person, injured over two dozen people, and damaged more than 100 homes and buildings.

Two years later, Nunez, 59, still has sleepless nights. When she does manage to slip into slumber, it‰??s common for her to snap awake in the middle of the night, panicked that she can smell gas in her home.

‰??I don‰??t remember what normal life was like before that September,‰?? said Nunez, who shared the house with her elderly father. ‰??I‰??m still going to therapy every other week, I went onto all kinds of medication to stop these vivid dreams I have. After the explosion, I lost life as I knew it.‰??

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Texas prosecutors agreed to drop assault charges against chemical maker Arkema SA and one of its executives over injuries suffered by workers during a fire triggered by a 2017 hurricane.

Assault charges against the French chemical company and logistics executive Michael Keough "cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt," prosecutors wrote in a motion filed in a Harris County District Court on Friday.

Arkema's Crosby, Texas, plant became waterlogged and lost power needed to keep stored organic peroxide chemicals cooled after Hurricane Harvey dumped more than 50 inches of rain on the area.

The judge in the case has not yet ruled on the motion.

"A prosecutor felt that there was enough evidence for a criminal charge, but he could not prove that charge beyond a reasonable doubt," said Dane Schiller, a spokesman for the Harris County District Attorney's office, explaining the motion.

Aerial firefighting has come a long way since the 1930s, when pilots in Ford Tri-Motors kicked water-filled beer kegs out the open doors of their planes and crossed their fingers.

Witness the coordinated attack from the sky that went on for a week against the Valley fire southeast of Alpine.

As many as 22 aircraft ‰?? from a lumbering 747 to darting helicopters ‰?? have been deployed daily in a tricky ballet. From sunrise to sunset, they dropped hundreds of thousands of gallons of chemical retardant and water to help slow the flames while crews on the ground protected houses and cut and bulldozed a containment perimeter.

PORTAGE, Wis. (WMTV) - Two people were injured in an accident involving a semi-truck filled with flammable materials overturned on Interstate 90 Friday afternoon.

According to a news release, troopers were called to the site of a possible four vehicle crash on I-90 near MP 116, near Poynette.

The troopers continued saying when they arrived, the found a semi truck had overturned while hauling hazardous, corrosive and flammable materials.

The semi had significant damage as a result of the crash and some of the hazardous material leaked out of the truck, troopers noted.

I-90 westbound was closed at State Highway 60 near Lodi and the Portage Fire HAZMAT team was called to the scene. The HAZMAT team said they rendered the scene mostly safe after an evaluation.

BROOKFIELD ‰?? A large hazmat spill in the Grays Bridge Road closed several roads Thursday afternoon.

Brookfield Fire Chief Andrew Ellis said he called the incident in after he saw a tanker leaking chemicals from a container a little after 2:30 p.m.

The leaking substance turned out to be 200-proof alcohol. About 100 gallons spilled on the road.

Ellis said the chemical container shifted in the truck and punctured on a support beam. The driver noticed the spill and immediately pulled over, the fire chief said.

‰??There was a large quantity of other chemicals in the vehicle as well,‰?? Ellis said.

BEIRUT ‰?? A huge fire broke out Thursday at the Port of Beirut, the site of last month‰??s catastrophic explosion that killed nearly 200 people and devastated parts of the capital. The new fire nearly 40 days after the blast triggered widespread panic among traumatized residents of the area.

It wasn‰??t immediately clear what caused the fire at the facility, which was decimated by the Aug. 4 explosion when nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate detonated. The blast triggered a shock wave that blew out windows, doors and walls miles away and was felt as far away as the island of Cyprus.

A column of thick black smoke billowed from the port at midday Thursday, with orange flames leaping from the ground. Smoke covered the capital and firefighters and ambulances rushed to the scene. Army helicopters were taking part in efforts to extinguish the fire.

Residents from Long Beach to Orange County noticed a strange odor in the air on Thursday, Sept. 10 ‰?? the result of a chemical spill near Compton, officials said.

Workers cleaning by an oil well in the 200 block of Alsina Street in Los Angeles knocked over a tank of liquid mercaptan, a non-toxic chemical used to add a detectable smell to natural gas and other hazardous materials, at about 11:15 a.m., Los Angles County Fire Department officials said.

The substance gave off an odor as it evaporated and was blown south.

‰??It‰??s highly concentrated in its liquid form,‰?? said Marvin Lim, a Fire Department spokesman. ‰??It went up into the air, and the winds carried it.‰??

LOCK HAVEN ‰?? UPMC Lock Haven Hospital on Cree Drive was evacuated Thursday night, with patients taken to a safe area after fire broke out in the boiler room about 9 p.m.

A hospital spokesman said maintenance crews were working at the boiler room earlier today sealing an old passageway, but the sealant being used apparently had some sort of chemical reaction and started a fire.

That‰??s the belief, anyway, but an investigation will further determine the cause, said Tyler Wagner, UPMC spokesman.

Citizens Hose Fire Chief Norm Wolfrom told The Express that firefighters encountered flames upon arrival.
