Spelman College, a small (‰?1Ú42150 students) Black women‰??s liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA, USA, is dedicated to empowering women of African descent to become global leaders and change agents. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting abrupt and unforeseen campus closure, Spelman experienced pressure and urgency to maintain a high quality curriculum for its students, while balancing student and faculty well-being. This communication is a reflection of the teaching practices that the faculty in Spelman‰??s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry implemented during the transition to emergency remote instruction (ERI). We first describe the initial week-long planning phase used to transition the Department to ERI, including detailed information on the faculty‰??s efforts to redesign lecture and lab courses via the adoption of new learning platforms, teaching strategies, and student learning objectives. Next, we use student survey data, collected by i!
ndividual faculty, to reflect on the challenges, opportunities, and iterative course redesign that occurred throughout ERI. Student well-being, engagement, and adaptation were of particular concern and challenge to the Department during ERI. Nevertheless, by embracing a spirit of ‰??productive disorder‰??, the Department was able to channel its faculty ‰??superpowers‰?? toward pedagogical change and transformation. More importantly, by allowing students to operate as independent and resilient learners in the time of COVID-19, we found that students rose to the challenge of creative expression and critique even in unconventional times.

A flaring event at the Chevron Refinery in Richmond on Friday that officials called an important part of keeping the refinery safe sent plumes of black smoke above the Bay Area on Friday.

The event brought a response from a Contra Costa County hazardous materials team and further dirtied the air on a day already designated as a Spare the Air alert by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

The refinery in a statement called the flaring a result of ‰??an upset at a process unit.‰?? Refinery officials said the flaring was brought under control quickly, and that it had stopped completely by 2:30 p.m.

A UN agency said Friday it is trying to determine what kind of hazardous debris landed across Beirut after the catastrophic port explosion and how to clean it up safely.

The United Nations Development Programme said it also wanted to find out how much the August 4 blast in the Lebanese capital may have polluted the Mediterranean Sea.

"Within seconds, Beirut was covered in layers and layers of debris," Rekha Das, the UNDP's crisis advisor in Lebanon, told reporters at the UN in Geneva via video-link.

"We are assessing the types of debris: the bricks, the steel, the glass, hazardous waste, medical waste, and electronic waste also needs to be dealt with.

"We have to find out what is dangerous and what is not. What can be recycled and what cannot.

"And if it cannot be recycled, where can it be safely disposed? Lebanon already had a huge solid waste crisis before the blast."

RIPPED CHEMICAL BAGS ADDED TO RISK OF BEIRUT BLAST

Lebanese officials knew that more than half the bags of a 2,750-ton stockpile of ammonium nitrate that caused a deadly explosion in Beirut were damaged six years ago but took no action to dispose of the chemical.

A 2014 inspection report by Beirut port authorities, seen by the Financial Times, labels the chemical as ‰??explosives‰?? and said that 1,950 of the 2,750 one-tonne bags filled with the chemical were ‰??torn." Photos of the stockpile taken the following year, also seen by the FT, show the huge sacks appearing to be stacked haphazardly on top of each other and ammonium nitrate spilling from large rips in the industrial bags.
The evidence will increase concerns that negligence and poor management were the root cause of the blast at the port, which killed more than 170 people and devastated the capital. Prime Minister Hassan Diab blamed ‰??political corruption‰?? for the tragedy as he resigned on Monday.

The ammonium nitrate, which can be used in fertilizers and as an explosive, was stored at Beirut port, on the northern tip of the capital, for six years after the load was impounded by Lebanese authorities.

Authorities in the south Indian city of Chennai have moved hundreds of tonnes of explosive chemical ammonium nitrate to Hyderabad.

That is after customs officers fast-tracked the process following last week's massive explosion in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The chemical was stored in Chennai since it was confiscated upon arrival five years ago.

A fire at the PRT Harrop Nursery sent clouds of black smoke into the sky all afternoon on Thursday.

The nursery lost a chemical storage building and machine shop to the fire, and on a neighbouring property a workshop was destroyed, according to Nora Hannon, regional fire chief for the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

‰??There was a large amount of Styrofoam that was near that fire, and other fuels,‰?? Hannon told the Star. ‰??So with the weather conditions and wind, the fire spread very, very quickly.‰??

KOCHI: A major fire broke out at Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) Industrial Park, Nelladu, near Kochi in the wee hours of Saturday causing a loss of about Rs 1 crore.

Beekay Foams, a chemical manufacturing firm, working here gutted in the fire. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

According to the Fire and Rescue Service officials, a short circuit inside the building caused the fire and it soon engulfed the entire firm as chemicals were kept inside.

Receiving an alert, six units of fire service units from Muvattupuzha, Kolanchery, Tripunithura and Perumbavoor reached the spot and pressed into service. The fire was brought into control by hours of fire fighting, by around 8 am. Officers said, nobody was inside the building during the incident.
