Lab workers in Hamilton Hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln caused a chemical flash fire around noon on Sunday, according to Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
LFR Captain Bob Watton said UNL chemists were working with two highly flammable chemical compounds in a small lab on the eighth floor when a water leak caused a reaction and started a flash fire.
Watton said the fire was contained in the room, which has scorch marks and water damage. There are no injuries.
LFR remained on the scene for a considerable amount of time, he said, taking extra precautions to avoid any burns or adverse health effects due to the chemicals.

ALBANY ‰?? In what may be the latest battlefront over potentially toxic PFAS chemicals in the environment, the state Legislature has approved a bill that would ban using the substances in food packaging.
PFAS‰??s, or poly and perfluorooctanoic acids, are associated with health problems such as thyroid disorders and cancers. Discovery of the chemicals in the village of Hoosick Falls‰?? water supply several years ago prompted emergency measures followed by a planned rebuilding of the municipal system.
There also has been a move to ban PFAS incineration amid worries about emissions such as those coming from the Cohoes‰?? Norlite aggregate plant, which had been burning firefighting foam made with the substance.
PFAS substances, which are known for their sturdy chemical makeup, have long been used in food packaging such as bags for pastries and popcorn as well as pizza boxes.
With that in mind, bills to ban PFAS used in food containers that were sponsored by Manhattan Sen. Brad Hoylman and Albany Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy, both Democrats, were approved by lawmakers last week.

Nearly two dozen people, mostly children, were sickened by a cloud of toxic chemicals at a pool in New Jersey, officials said Friday.
At least 23 people fell ill shortly after 9 a.m. Friday morning after breathing in the noxious vapor at the Glacier Hills Association Pool in Parsippany, police said in a statement.
Investigators believe the toxic cloud was a mixture of pool chemicals that included chlorine and muriatic acid.
Chlorine is used to kill bacteria in pools. Muriatic acid, a diluted yet still corrosive form of hydrochloric acid. It is generally used to lower the alkalinity and pH levels in pool water.

New Delhi [India], July 24 (ANI): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has suggested a need for preventive action including conducting mock-drills to avoid any incidents related to massive fires in the chemical plants and asked the Chief Secretaries of all States to hold meetings with concerned officers and stakeholders to take stock of the situation and issue such directions as may be found necessary.
"In view of the repeated failures of compliance of safety norms, there is need for preventive action to avoid any such incidents for which the Chief Secretaries of the all the States may hold meetings with concerned officers and stakeholders within two weeks from today to take stock of the situation and issue such directions as may be found necessary. The preventive action may also include mock-drills as a statutory requirement to be performed under the 1989 Rules," the NGT bench headed by its chairperson AK Goel said.
"We have come across several incidents in recent past (within last three months) resulting in deaths of and injuries to human beings and damage to the environment on account of the failure of compliance of the statutory provisions including the on-site and off-site emergency plans and also other safety measures," the green tribunal said.

PARIS ‰?? An orange-brown chemical sheet spread over 15 acres (6 hectares) of a nationally recognized marine life area in the French Mediterranean following a leak at a petrochemical plant in southern France, the local fire service said Friday.
The leak at the Lavera refinery spilled 200 gallons or more of iron chloride into the sea, American-owned chemical company Kem One, which runs the plant, said. Contact with iron chloride can harm eyes and mucous membranes, and ingesting it can be fatal.
Refinery officials said the problem at the processing plant in Martigues, near Marseille, was reported at 1:50 a.m. Thursday. They said the iron chloride spilled from a tank onto a faulty safety system, which flooded into the nearby sewage systems and into the sea.

What pollutants billowed into the air as a Navy ship burned in San Diego harbor earlier this month are finally now public ‰?? and so are a number of violations against the military for emitting them.
The USS Bonhomme Richard, an almost 900-foot marine assault vessel, caught fire on July 12 and blanketed the region in smoke. Within days, the haze caught a westerly wind, casting fine particles through the air as far as El Cajon.
Residents of San Diego neighborhoods (especially those close to the shipyards) reported nausea and headaches.
A team of air pollution specialists worked overtime last week, following social media reports to locate where smoke from the burning ship reached San Diegans. They carried with them silver canisters, a bit smaller than a basketball, which capture air in a vacuum and store it until laboratory technicians can analyze its contents.

For years, researchers have linked various chemicals found in daily-use products to diseases, including cancer. Now, a research team from New York University's Grossman School of Medicine found another set of chemicals found in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and can linings that cause infertility, diabetes, and impaired brain development.
The study published in the journals Endocrinology and the Lancet reviewed hundreds of research papers. They found several endocrine disruptors that lead to obesity, to endometriosis ‰?? a painful and abnormal growth of tissue on the outside of the womb ‰?? and to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which causes infertility. The toxins that cause these health issues include perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Not only women's fertility but also men's fertility is affected by these chemicals.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is planning to move its plutonium analysis into a radiology building where officials say the work can grow.
Relocating the plutonium work from a 1950s-era chemistry and metallurgy facility to the radiology lab will allow an increase in the amount of low-level radioactive material technicians can handle ‰?? to 400 grams from the current 38.6 grams ‰?? as LANL ramps up its production of nuclear weapons triggers.
The radiology lab is designed to house nuclear operations and is conveniently located near LANL‰??s plutonium facility, said Toni Chiri, a spokeswoman for the National Nuclear Security Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Energy that oversees national labs.
‰??The project would allow NNSA to optimize the use of laboratory space for all plutonium work at Los Alamos,‰?? Chiri said in an email.
But the move will require significant upgrades to the radiology facility.
