Los Alamos National Laboratory is planning to move its plutonium analysis into a radiology building where officials say the work can grow.
Relocating the plutonium work from a 1950s-era chemistry and metallurgy facility to the radiology lab will allow an increase in the amount of low-level radioactive material technicians can handle ‰?? to 400 grams from the current 38.6 grams ‰?? as LANL ramps up its production of nuclear weapons triggers.
The radiology lab is designed to house nuclear operations and is conveniently located near LANL‰??s plutonium facility, said Toni Chiri, a spokeswoman for the National Nuclear Security Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Energy that oversees national labs.
‰??The project would allow NNSA to optimize the use of laboratory space for all plutonium work at Los Alamos,‰?? Chiri said in an email.
But the move will require significant upgrades to the radiology facility.

The exit ramp from northbound I-75 to the Ohio Turnpike and State Rt. 795 near Perrysburg is closed because of a hazardous-materials spill resulting from a truck crash, the Ohio State Highway Patrol‰??s Bowling Green post reported.
The 5 a.m. crash involved a single commercial vehicle and was believed to have caused injuries of unknown extent, troopers said. They did not specify the truck‰??s cargo.
Crews remained on scene nearly three hours later, though the Ohio Department of Transportation is not reporting additional traffic delays because of the incident. It is unknown how long crews will be on scene.

Firefighters responded to a Hazmat situation on Atlantic Avenue and Essex Street Thursday after a construction company cut through an HVAC coolant line, causing about 100 gallons of material to spill into the street, officials said.
The accident, which happened around 8:30 p.m., caused a nontoxic material, ethanol glycol, to spill from a fourth floor window, onto the sidewalk, and into the drains below, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Several area fire departments responded to an explosion at the Granite Packaging LLC manufacturing plant in Social Circle, GA on Thursday morning, local news organizations reported.
The town‰??s mayor, David Keener, told Your Local News that the blast at the Leggett Road plant caused some injuries, but he could not provide specific details. Social Circle Police Department Deputy Chief Jimmy Robinson said in coverage by the Walton Tribune that one person was transported to a hospital in Atlanta by helicopter and several others with injuries received treatment on scene.
A fire official with Walton County Fire Rescue described the incident as a chemical explosion in Your Local News‰?? account.
No information was available on the cause of the explosion.

TORRINGTON ‰?? Several buildings were evacuated and power was shut off in a residential area of Torrington Wednesday, after crews found propane gas leaking from a 500-gallon, underground tank.
Fire Chief Peter Towey said the leak was reported at a home at 207 Silver Brook Lane at 3:07 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered the tank‰??s fitting had been damaged by a trailer, and was ‰??not able to be plugged or repaired, ‰?? Towey said.
Torrington police and firefighters evacuated the homes surrounding the leaking tank and power to the area was shut off. The Waterbury Fire Department‰??s regional Hazmat team were called to the scene.

HONOLULU (KHON2) ‰?? On July 21, The Honolulu Fire Department responded to reports of a gas leak at the Pacific Marina Inn near Keihi lagoon around 9:10 p.m.
The HFD response was comprised of 4 units, including 14 Hazardous Materials Unit (HAZMAT) personnel.
The first unit arrived at 9:15 p.m. and HFD staff successfully plugged the leak shortly after. No evacuations were ordered and no injuries have been reported.
Hawaii Gas determined that the site is safe, and says that more permanent repairs will be made in the future.

INDIA: WHY WAS DAYTIME OZONE POLLUTION HIGHER DURING THE LOCKDOWNS?

At the end of the first lockdown period, from March 24 to April 14, the level of criteria pollutants in Delhi had declined to different extents ‰?? but the daytime average for the amount of ozone in the air had begun to increase. As The Wire Science reported, this was the result of atmospheric chemistry. NOx, the generic term for the nitrogen oxides important in atmospheric chemistry, comprises nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). NO eats ozone and NO2 makes ozone.
Vehicular emissions are responsible for more than 50% of Delhi‰??s NOx emissions. With only a limited amount of NO present, ozone accumulates in the atmosphere.
The data showed the same thing happening during the subsequent lockdown phases as well, in Delhi as well as around the country. Other datasets showed similar trends around the planet.

CSB ISSUES GUIDANCE ON ACCIDENT PREVENTION

Company Boards of Directors and senior executives of oil and gas companies should take notice of a May 14, 2020, guidance document issued by the Chemical Safety Board (CSB) entitled, ‰??CSB Best Practice Guidance for Corporate Boards of Directors and Executives in the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry for Major Accident Prevention.,‰?? And don‰??t be deceived by its title reference to offshore activities. Companies also need to pay mind to the guidance for onshore operations. Why? If there is an accident, government agencies will likely argue that the principles articulated apply equally as well on dry land.
Why issue guidance now? The guidance comes at the 10-year anniversary of one of the most significant offshore explosions in history‰??the Deepwater Horizon explosion that occurred in the Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, offshore of Louisiana. The symbolic step of issuing the guidance just one week ahead of the 10 year anniversary of the May 20, 2010, Macondo blowout, fire, and explosion was surely intended to bring additional attention to its release.
The guidance focuses on boards of directors‰?? and executives‰?? roles in ensuring implementation of effective safety management systems to manage risks of major accidents properly. The guidance points to a recent industry report [1] noting that process safety is one of the least discussed topics at corporate board meetings. Clearly, the CSB perceives this to be a sign that top-level management at oil and gas companies are not paying enough attention to these issues.

ABSTRACT: Academic institutions are faced with the complex problem of accurately determining the hazards associated with a proposed or ongoing project. For many reasons, compressed gas safety can be a significant challenge at universities, especially those that involve research using many uncommon materials. This article is a call to action for implementing better safety practices when using compressed gases and helps to fill the gap on resources related to compressed gases. General operating procedures and resources for safe practices when using compressed gases are outlined in this article, as well as lessons learned from incidents involving compressed gases.
