HOUSTON (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell Plc <RDSa.L> shut on Saturday the gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracker (FCC) at its 318,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) joint-venture Deer Park, Texas, refinery after a fire, sources familiar with plant operations said on Sunday.

How long the 70,000-bpd FCC will be shut was unknown on Sunday, the sources said.

Shell spokesman Curtis Smith said on Sunday that all individuals were safe and accounted for at the Shell Deer Park Complex, which includes the refinery and adjoining chemical plant.

"We responded to a small fire and leak at one of the units at our Deer Park Manufacturing Complex," Smith said. "The fire is extinguished, all individuals are safe and accounted for and our operations team is working to stop the leak and safely repair the unit."

VANCOUVER -- Mounties in Richmond are investigating after a fire at what they believe to be a clandestine drug lab located in a home on a suburban side street in their city.

Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Adriana Peralta told CTV News Vancouver it was the Richmond Fire Rescue Service that first alerted police to the incident.

Fire crews were called to the home in the 5000 block of Calder Court - a dead-end street in a residential area near the intersection of Railway Avenue and Blundell Road - around 2 p.m. to put out a structure fire.

AFTER SEVEN WORKERS DIE, FOUR MORE KILLED CLEANING TANK OF SAME GUJARAT FIRM

Four labourers on Saturday died while cleaning out a chemical tank of a private firm, Vishal Fabrics, owned by Chiripal Group, located in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Police said that labourers followed each other into the tank containing chemical waste after the first one to go failed to respond. This is the second fatal incident this year involving the same group. Earlier, seven workers had been burnt to death in another denim factory in the city where gross negligence of fire safety norms had been revealed.

"There were four workers who had been hired by a private contractor for cleaning the chemical tank. After the first labourer didn't come out and stopped responding, three others stepped into the tank one by one and died," said Ahmedabad district superintendent of police R V Asari. He said the incident happened in Dholi village of Dholka taluka at a chemical waste facility of the Vishal Fabrics associated with Chiripal Group. The factory manufactures stretch denim fabric.

The victims have been identified as Mayur Barad, Vijay Barad, both resident of Sanand and Pravin Rathod and Prabhu Jamod, residents of Dholka. They were in their early 20s. Assistant Superintendent of Police Nitish Pandey said that the process of FIR was underway. Meanwhile, Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani twitted pictures of the victims and alleged that the police were "reluctant to lodge an FIR" against the company for its connection with the political party.

LEAD FALLOUT FROM NOTRE-DAME FIRE MORE THAN ORIGINALLY REPORTED

Ever since a fire devastated the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in April 2019, locals and environmental groups have raised concerns about the fate of lead in the cathedral‰??s roof and spire. Alexander van Geen of Columbia University set out to determine if those fears were justified. In December 2019 and February 2020, van Geen collected multiple samples of soil near the cathedral and measured lead concentrations via X-ray fluorescence. Statistician colleagues then used these measurements to estimate how much lead fell near the fire. Their results suggest that about 1,000 kg of lead settled within a kilometer of the cathedral‰??more than six times the amount estimated by local authorities (GeoHealth 2020, DOI: 10.1029/2020GH000279). Van Geen‰??s tests show that lead-laced dust settled in the area and may have also got into buildings. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ingesting contaminated house dust or soil is one way children become exposed to!
lead. Larger environmental tests immediately after the fire would have alerted health officials to the dangers, the researchers say. But few samples of soil, dust, or blood were collected immediately after the fire, making it difficult to ascertain how the lead from this event may affect human health.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ‰?? Every time a gun fires, lead leaches into the air. A scientific advancement could provide a comparable replacement for lead-based explosive materials found in ammunition, protecting soldiers and the environment from potential toxic effects.

Purdue University researchers, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command‰??s Army Research Laboratory, developed two new lead-free materials that function as primary explosives, which are used to ignite powder inside a gun cartridge.

The work, funded by the Army Research Office, appears in a paper published in Chemistry ‰?? A European Journal.

‰??Right now, whenever you are shooting, you‰??re going to be spreading lead into the air around you,‰?? said Davin Piercey, a Purdue assistant professor of materials engineering and mechanical engineering. ‰??Any use of lead is going to end up polluting the environment in small amounts. The more lead you remove, the better it is for the environment.‰??
