I received this request from our Chemistry Department chair today.
I'm starting to think about the fall lab curriculum, and we are working toward designing some online labs as well as modifying others we hope to be able to run this fall. I was wondering if you knew of any decent virtual lab safety simulations or modules we
could use. Or, perhaps we could brainstorm how to make one. This is for our general chemistry level. My hope would be to either use, or make something that students complete online before coming to lab. Then in lab, we can review, point out safety features
in the actual room, and then begin lab.
I know that such a resource from France was described this week in J Chem Ed (see "Open Digital Educational Resources for Self-Training Chemistry Lab Safety Rules" at
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jchemed.0c00094 )
but I haven't been able to connect to the web site they cite and it's not clear from the article if the content is appropriate for our setting (rules-based safety education has that disadvantage).
I wonder if CHAS members know of other electronic resources that can be adapted to this purpose for the first year chemistry undergraduate students?
Thanks for any help with this.
- Ralph
