Seven units from Ennis and Shannon Fire Brigades attended an incident at the grounds of Avara Pharmaceuticals in the Shannon Industrial Estate on Sunday morning.

It is understood that the incident occured after 06:13 on Sunday morning with Shannon Fire Brigade ordered to the site at 07:02 following reports of smoke on the ground floor of a building. Ennis Fire Brigade were also mobilised to the incident as backup.

‰??On attendance, they met with Avara personnel, and a search of the particular building was then carried out by Fire Service personnel wearing Breathing Apparatus. It was determined that there may have been an equipment fault earlier, and the building was then declared safe by the Fire Service,‰?? a spokesperson for Clare County Council told The Clare Echo.

The Clare Echo understands that the fire occurred due to poorly maintained equipment overheating which subsequently filled a production area with smoke, then setting off the main site evacuation alarm.

It is listed by the HSA as a notified Seveso lower tier establishment. ‰??Major industrial accidents involving dangerous substances pose a significant threat to humans and the environment, such accidents can give rise to serious injury to people or serious damage to the environment, both on and off the site of the accident.
