A mixture of salt and water with a splash of vinegar and a jolt of electrochemical activation is supplying Waco firefighters with a safe but powerful disinfectant as they work to keep their equipment and quarters free of COVID-19.
Crews at Waco Fire Station No. 11, where the department‰??s hazardous materials unit is housed, have also developed a new spray system for the disinfectant using their air tanks and other common firehouse equipment. Their formula for homemade hypochlorous acid paired with the spray system lets them kill viruses, bacteria and fungus on gear, trucks and high-use firehouse areas in 60 seconds without the need to wipe everything down afterward.
‰??For lack of a better term, we are the science nerds at Station 11, you know the hazmat crew. Because there is a lot of chemistry that goes into working hazmat calls, we knew we could do something during this time,‰?? said Waco fire Lt. Philip Burnett, who works at Station No. 11. ‰??The mixture is basically water, salt and we have to put vinegar in it to lower the pH level to make it neutral, then basically ‰??cook‰?? it by putting electricity to it to make the acid with a kill-rate higher than bleach.‰??

A major fire broke out at a chemical factory near Jatwar village of Shahzadpur block here late on Sunday night. Drums filled with chemicals were lying in the open at the factory.
Fire officer Amar Singh said foam was being used to control the fire. Five fire tenders had been pressed into service to douse the flames. It would be checked if the factory had any fire NoC or not. The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
No injury or casualty was reported in the incident so far. Fire-fighters were still making efforts to control the fire till the filing of the report.
Meanwhile, another fire incident was reported at Pratap factory in the Saha block of Ambala late this night. The SHO, Saha, who reached the spot, said 6 fire tenders had been pressed into service to douse the flames. No loss of life has been reported yet. The exact cause of the fire was not known yet. ‰?? QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF SAFETY AND HEALTH RISKS IN HAZMAT ROAD TRANSPORT USING A HYBRID APPROACH: A CASE STUDY IN TEHRAN

Given the catastrophic consequences of hazardous materials‰?? leakage from trucks, it has become necessary to adopt a coherent approach for quantitative risk assessment in this process. Therefore, this study aimed at assessing the quantitative risk in the road transport of hazardous materials using a Bayesian network and the fuzzy inference system. Using a bowtie analysis in a Bayesian network, this study conducted a cause‰??consequence analysis of material leakage from trucks. Accordingly, hybrid equations and a fuzzy inference system were used to evaluate the severity of health and safety consequences and determine the severity correction factor of the studied nodes. Finally, the quantitative risk was calculated. Based on the results, it was found that the probability of chemical leakage from trucks carrying hazardous materials was 3.7512 Ì? 10‰??1. In addition, the probabilities (in years) of health damage, BLEVE explosion, and fire were 2.47 Ì? 10‰??1, 5.775 Ì? 10‰??2, a!
nd 8.25 Ì? 10‰??2, respectively. The safe distance at the time of BLEVE of gasoline and dispersion of chlorine gas was 49.3 and 187 m, respectively. The results of this study showed that the combination of the Bayesian network (BN) and the fuzzy inference system (FIS) could be used as a precise tool for assessing the quantitative risk of hazardous chemicals‰?? transport.

ICHEON, South Korea, May 3 (Yonhap) -- Police resumed Sunday their search for the remains and personal belongings of victims of a fire that killed scores of workers in Icheon, south of Seoul.
The fire that broke out at a warehouse in Icheon, 80 kilometers south of Seoul, on Wednesday at 1:32 p.m. killed 38 and injured 10 others. Among those killed are one Chinese and two Kazakh workers.
Authorities believe the fire started on the second underground floor during construction work involving urethane, a combustible chemical used for insulation work, and the installation of a freight elevator.

One person was transported to a Las Vegas medical facility after sustaining chemical burns in a motorhome over the weekend.
Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Services Chief Scott Lewis said crews were dispatched to the area of Highway 372 and Raindance Drive just before 10 p.m. on Sunday, April 19.
‰??Upon arrival, we found an extinguished fire within the motorhome and the occupant had self-transported to Desert View Hospital,‰?? he said. ‰??Our investigation revealed significant burns sustained by an ignition of spilled acetone, which is a volatile, flammable liquid with a characteristic odor. That patient was subsequently transported to a Las Vegas burn center and the fire is thought to be accidental in nature.‰??

Although pyrimidines are not among the most reactive partners in intramolecular inverse-electron-demand [4ì?s + 2ì?s] reactions with alkynes, they can be activated under mild and practical conditions, leading to fused nitrogen-containing heterocycles. We report an optimized synthesis of a 5-iodo-7-azaindazole by a one-pot Diels‰??Alder cascade that starts from a pyrimidine substituted at the 2-position by an (alkynyl)hydrazone. The safety of the process and the environmental impact were thoroughly evaluated. Eventually, a selection of cross-coupling reactions of 17 were studied and found to allow the introduction of carbon- and nitrogen-based nucleophiles at the 5-position in good to excellent yields.
