I would add that, just as with all PPE and other safety measures, what should be shown is what is appropriate to the situation. I'm okay with that being current safety measures; while I agree with Monique that there can be a delay, there is a need to model current practice, not outdated practice). And in a weekly publication or a blog, turnaround is faster.

But if folks are working in a setting, such as that in the production plants where workers were sleeping in, where face masks and social distancing isn't required, putting them on for a photo is artificial. Just as gloves that are not necessary for the hazard of the materials being handled can increase risk due to decreases in manual dexterity and false senses of protection, face masks that are not necessary can impair vision and increase fatigue.

With stock photos used to illustrate, you still have to ask whether it is an accurate representation of what is appropriate for the article being illustrated. For real photos, folks should be following appropriate safety precautions. But, let's say that folks submit photos of parents helping their children with at-home science. Neither social distancing nor masks are called for in those photos, in my opinion (although eyewear and gloves might be) - although if they want to verify that quarantining/stay-home measures had been faithfully followed, and mention that in the article, that could be a reasonable publishing decision to emphasize the safety aspects of the current time. For "timeless" articles not embedded in the current situation (as mentioned by... Chris?), you could argue that, in the absence of specific pandemic aspect, the safety practices should be those relevant to the discussion.

This is an excellent question. My thought is that most people reading these publications know that the writing and publishing process can take a while and that much of what they read today was written and possibly even submitted in the past, before the pandemic. It took me months to finish up a SHORT opinion piece and I have been sitting on finalizing a submission to JCE for over 4 years. Therefore, I do not think that those reading would assume that the pictures they are seeing are under our current circumstances and wouldn't see any reasons for limiting the pictures to fit the current scenario unless it is an article specifically about how we are working now.
