In January 2020 a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) researcher was pulling data from a Thermogravimetric Analyzer - Mass Spectrometry (TGA-MS) computer in a lab in the LSL2 building while electricians were replacing the lab's light bulbs. The researcher noticed an acrid smell he attributed to the work the electricians were performing. However, because the smell was out of the ordinary the researcher decided to check the heating elements on the TGA manifold. At that moment the researcher heard a clicking sound coming from the water chiller used to cool the TGA manifold and then noticed sparks and small orange flames coming from the side grill of the chiller. He alerted the electricians, unplugged the chiller power cord and pulled the fire alarm, while the electricians called the PNNL Security Operations Center.

A50-year old man was injured in a 'minor' explosion of an abandoned chemical liquid container at a garbage heap in Adugodi area in the city on Sunday, police said.

The chemical, used for cutting granite, was exposed to the sun for quite some resulting in the explosion, they said.

"Minor explosion of an abandoned chemical liquid container at Adugodi used for cutting granite. One person injured. Nothing to worry and panic," Bengaluru Commissioner of Police Bhaskar Rao tweeted.

The man, identified as Narasimhaiah, was injured in his left leg and had been admitted to a hospital, police said.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Srinath Joshi, the man was sitting near the heap of garbage, close to a Ganesha temple, when the explosion took place.

"It has come to our light that there was a chemical lying there, which was exposed to the sun for quite some time. No other object nearby was damaged. It was not caused intentionally. For further investigation, we have called people in the Forensic Science Laboratory, he told reporters.

An explosion occurred at Lotte Chemical's Daesan plant. The accident, which occurred at the Naphtha Cracking Center, dubbed the flower of petrochemicals, is expected to cause production disruption. Lotte Chemical shut down seven plants, including BTX and BD plants.

Lotte Chemical, particularly, is facing a problem of insensitivity to safety as the explosion continues every year. Lotte Chemical has been under eight institutional sanctions over the past two years for safety accidents such as gas leaks and fires.

According to the fire department on March 4, an explosion occurred at 2:59 a.m. at Lotte Chemical's plant in Daesan, South Chungcheong Province. The accident caused a total of 36 casualties, including two serious injuries and 34 minor wounds. They are also known to include nearby residents.

Lotte Chemical has shut down seven plants, including BTX and BD. Six plants, including the EOA and EG, are operating normally. However, as ethylene production has been disrupted, it is expected to have a negative impact on HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE) and synthetic fiber raw materials.

Firefighters in North Yorkshire have tackled a blaze that broke out after a pig swallowed a pedometer which then combusted in its pen after excretion.

The fire crews were called to a blaze covering 75 square metres at four pigpens in Bramham, near Leeds, on Saturday afternoon.

The North Yorkshire fire and rescue service said the fire was caused by ‰??nature taking its course‰?? and copper from the pedometer battery reacting with dry hay and the pigpen‰??s contents.

The pedometer was being used to prove the animal was free range and had been taken off one of its fellow pigs.

No animals were harmed as a result of the fire.

‰??Should be an oink not a tweet,‰?? said the fire service on social media. ‰??A hosereel was used to extinguish the fire and save the bacon.‰??

KARACHI: As many as 70 people suffered multiple problems because of gas leak at a chemical plant in Bin Qasim area on Friday. The incident caused due to the "release of chlorine gas through the vents". The matter was quickly contained and the affected people were immediately rushed for necessary first aid to nearby medical facilities. Patients were being released once cleared after necessary inspection and necessary first aid. No fainting spells, injuries or fatalities have been reported so far." Owing to the incident, specific areas of the plant have been "taken offline" as a precautionary measure, and further investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the incident are under way. The incident did not occur due to a boiler explosion, adding that all employees exposed to the gas were being screened.

However, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Executive Director Dr Seemin Jamali said that 80 patients had been brought to the facility, at least one of whom was in critical condition. She later clarified that 70 people had been brought to the facility.

Jamali maintained that an emergency had been declared at the hospital due to the gas leak.

"Around 55 patients were discharged after being provided first aid. Around 15 patients are still at the facility," she said, adding that all those affected by the incident were facing breathing difficulties.
