I highly recommend Debra Bloom's book "The Poison Squad: One Chemist's Single-Minded Crusade for Food Safety at the Turn of the Twentieth Century." Less than 15 bucks in paperback.

While I'm recommending books, I'll also recommend Kate Moore's "The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women."
