JOHOR BARU, Dec 9 ‰?? A total of 12 chemical factory workers in Jalan Nibong 1, Tanjung Langsat Industrial area near Pasir Gudang sustained burns in a fire at the factory yesterday.
Seri Alam district police chief Supt Ismail Dollah said the fire, which happened at around 9.21am to 9.27am, was completely put out by Lotte Chemical Titan (M) Sdn Bhd firefighting unit.
‰??The incident resulted in 12 workers sustaining burn injuries on their body.
‰??Two of them were treated at Sultan Ismail Hospital here while four were at Pasir Gudang Penawar Hospital. Another six were given outpatient treatment at Penawar Hospital,‰?? he said in a statement here yesterday.
Ismail said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Datuk Yahya Madis confirmed that the fire was extinguished by factory‰??s emergency response

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas ‰?? The Harris County Fire Marshal‰??s Office has completed its investigation of the devastating fire at the ITC plant in Deer Park in March.
Investigators have ruled the fire accidental.
The final report says the fire was caused by a mechanical failure within the "manifold power frame" at one of the storage tanks at the site. That piece of equipment contains a motor and set of pipes used to pump product in and out of the tank. Investigators could not determine how the equipment failed or the ignition source.
The 203-page report did conclude about 9,000 gallons of the highly flammable chemical naphtha leaked before it caught fire.
The fire raged for four days. A report from the U.S. Chemical and Safety Hazard Investigation Board in October claimed the facility was not equipped with gas detection alarms or emergency shutoff valves that could have isolated the fire.

WASHINGTON, DC ‰?? Language that would have given the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the authority to order cleanups at sites contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals has been dropped from the annual defense spending bill in Congress.
According to capitol news outlets, Democrats have agreed to advance the ‰??must pass‰?? 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, without provisions regulating PFAS in toxic site cleanups or drinking water in order to meet a legislative conference deadline.

State Representative Wendell Gilliard and community leaders met with managers of the Lanxess chemical plant in Charleston today.
Last week, a phosphorous leak ignited a fire that kept fire and hazmat crews busy for hours.
Phosphorus ignites when it touches air, explained plant manager Jean-Francois Berthiaume.
Rep. Gilliard used to work at the site when it was run by a different company.
Monday, he sent a letter to the plant expressing his concerns about the recent chemical leak and a chlorine leak in May that ‰??resulted in plant workers needing medical treatment.‰??

Three days after officials said the fire at TPC Group in Port Neches had been extinguished, the unified command responding to the situation released a statement Friday saying small fires have been detected on site.
"We have identified small fires in the impacted area on site," the update states. "These small residual fires were anticipated and are being contained. Response teams continue to monitor and assess. Smoke may be visible."
On Thursday, the Chemical Safety Board said the Nov. 27 explosion was caused when a vapor cloud over a butadiene unit ignited, releasing various chemicals including 1,3-butadiene and asbestos.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) ‰?? At least four people were injured in a HAZMAT incident near Metro Center Thursday morning.
Crews with the Nashville Fire Department were dispatched to 221 Cumberland Bend, which is a Social Security office, around 10:15 a.m.
The department said four people needed treatment after the HAZMAT situation.
Larry Clymer, Chief of Special Operations with the Nashville Fire Department described the incident as ‰??a dried out pee trap, it‰??s an s curve in the plumbing and if it the trap dries out, odors can come out‰??
According to authorities, those that felt sick left and possibly went home before fire officials arrived.

Santiago, Chile, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) A blast occurred Thursday morning at a chemical plant on the outskirts of Santiago, sparking the preventive evacuation of many local residents.
Firefighters were alerted by residents of the Maipu commune after the explosion, which according to the authorities was a result of a reaction caused by the mixture of chemical components.
According to reports, the blast was also felt in other municipalities in western Santiago, and at least eight people were admitted to hospital in the commune, although without serious injuries.
Five firefighter companies were deployed to the site and, as a preventive measure, evacuated the nearby population and workers from companies within a 500-meter radius, Radio Bio Bio reported.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authorized the use of "cyanide bombs" to protect livestock against wild animals on Thursday after adding additional safety requirements in response to backlash from environmental groups.
The new requirements call for increased distances between where the M-44 chemical trap devices can be placed. Advocacy groups had raised concerns in August when the previous proposal was announced.
The EPA's earlier authorization for use of the devices ‰?? to manage populations of coyotes, foxes and other wild animals ‰?? was withdrawn a week after it was introduced, with the agency saying further analysis was needed.
‰??Through our discussions, we identified new restrictions that will raise awareness and create additional buffers around where M-44s are placed, which will reduce the potential for unintended impacts on humans, pets, and other non-target animals,‰?? EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Alexandra Dunn said in a statement Thursday.

The first details of what happened right before the TPC Group plant in Port Neches erupted in flames last week were laid out Thursday, but federal officials warned that real answers are likely months away.
A vapor cloud over a butadiene unit exploded in the early morning of Nov. 27, setting off the catastrophic explosion at the TPC Group blast that ignited a nearly week-long fire at the plant and led to the release of chemicals including 1,3-butadiene and asbestos, the Chemical Safety Board reported at a news conference Thursday.
The Chemical Safety Board, the independent federal agency tasked with investigating and documenting plant and refinery incidents, arrived in Southeast Texas earlier in the week but hadn‰??t released updates on their activities until Thursday.
CSB board member Manuel Ehrlich said the six investigators sent to Port Neches haven‰??t been able to make it inside the plant site because of ongoing response efforts but have gotten accounts from the three workers injured at the site.
