Vancouver firefighters and a hazmat team spent more than two hours at the scene of a gas leak Friday.

Someone drove into a gas meter, causing natural gas to leak into a self-storage facility, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Joe Hudson said.

Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. to Northwest Self Storage at 2410 S.E. 164th Ave. Two fire engines and a battalion chief responded.

After fire crews learned what happened, a hazmat team was requested to assess the situation. The team detected concerning levels of gas in the air, which required an evacuation of the building, Hudson said.

Taos Volunteer Fire Department controlled a chemical spill of an unknown substance that pooled in the ground at RAC Transport at 809 Gusdorf Road in Taos Friday morning (Oct. 18).

A firetruck arrived at the scene of the spill around 9:30 a.m. at the RAC headquarters located near two apartment complexes just down the road from Taos High School.

Inside the fenced entrance to the headquarters, a large container on a tranport pallet in front of the company's open bay door appeared to have been damaged. Around it, a blue liquid pooled on the ground.

Taos firefighters controlled the spill as of 10 a.m., but were still working to absorb the chemicals from the ground.

When firefighters rolled up to the flaming NuStar fuel storage facility in Crockett this week, they found the gates locked and no one around to immediately tell them what was on fire, according to an official briefed on the incident.

It was just one of the delays in responding to Tuesday's chemical fire that triggered shelter in place for several nearby towns and shut Interstate 80 for hours.

‰??What we don't know is whether they felt at risk for their lives and their safety, so all of this had to get looked at in the investigation,‰?? said Contra Cost Supervisor John Gioia said. ‰??But the fact that personnel from NuStar left without activating the fire suppression is just a piece of information that needs to be considered. Whether they had cause to do that we don‰??t know until the investigation is done. ‰??

NuStar said the explosion and fire happened so quickly that the suppression equipment was inaccessible at first. The company also claimed that its workers are well-versed in what's in the tanks. The problem on Tuesday was just a matter of identifying which tanks were on fire.

Jackson Hole Fire/EMS was called to mitigate a chlorine gas leak at the Karns Meadow well house Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, responders recognized the hazard of the leak and requested assistance from the Region 8 Emergency Response Team. Two compressed cylinders of chlorine gas were turned off and gas levels were monitored to ensure the leak had been terminated. Jackson‰??s water manager John Ryan blames the leak on a broken valve between the two cylinders. Emergency responders worked for two hours to ensure public and responder safety as the hazard was being mitigated. No area evacuations were required. The Town of Jackson Public Works staff provided critical information for the mitigation crew throughout the event. The Region 8 Response Team consists of 17 multiagency members who receive specialized training for incidents involving hazardous materials or bomb threats.
