A small hazardous materials leak closed the Washington State Patrol port of entry weigh station on the westbound side of Interstate 90 near the Washington-Idaho border Thursday evening.
The leak had no impact on travel along I-90 or the surrounding area, according to Trooper Jeff Sevigney, a Washington State Patrol spokesman. There was no estimate as to when the weigh station would reopen.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department identified the liquid leaking out of a trailer as a corrosive aluminum cleaner, KHQ reported.

Lithgow's hazardous materials team was called to a chemical spill at Wallerawang Sewerage Plant on Thursday, October 17.
Wallerawang Fire and Rescue NSW was alerted to the spill at about 9.30am on Thursday morning as part of a general emergency response.
Deputy captain Luke Curran said patches of dead grass and puddles of chemicals were found in a dirt drain at the site.
Lithgow's HAZMAT unit was called to address the spill, which was believed to be caustic soda.

HAZMAT INCIDENT IN KARN'S MEADOW ‰?? JACKSON HOLE RADIO

Jackson Hole Fire/EMS was called to mitigate a chlorine gas leak at the Karns Meadow well house Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, responders recognized the hazard of the leak and requested assistance from the Region 8 Emergency Response Team. Team members donned their Level A hazmat suites and made entry into the well house. Two compressed cylinders of chlorine gas were turned off and gas levels were monitored to ensure the leak had been terminated. Jackson‰??s water manager John Ryan blames the leak on a broken valve between the two cylinders. Emergency responders worked for two hours to ensure public and responder safety as the hazard was being mitigated. No area evacuations were required. The Town of Jackson Public Works staff provided critical information for the mitigation crew throughout the event. The Region 8 Response Team consists of 17 multiagency members who receive specialized training for incidents involving hazardous materials or bomb threats.

Tillamook Fire District responded to a report of a Hazardous Materials incident at 10:08 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Shilo Inn in Tillamook.
The accidental mixing of muriatic acid with chlorine resulted in two employees requiring medical attention at the Tillamook Emergency Room (ER) for breathing problems.
They were driven to the ER in a personally owned vehicle prior to emergency responders arriving at the incident. One employee was evaluated and released and the other remained in the ER for treatment and monitoring.

Washington, DC, Oct. 17, 2019 ‰?? A massive refinery explosion that this week paralyzed much of the San Francisco Bay Area raised uncertainties about the contents of the massive chemical plume coating neighboring communities. A new regulation requiring that regulators, responders, and communities be informed about chemicals released by industrial accidents, won through a lawsuit by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), has yet to take effect.
Tuesday‰??s tank explosion and fire at the NuStar refinery in Crockett forced nearby residents to shelter in place and closed the interstate for hours. First responders fought blazes that covered surrounding hills and threatened to engulf even more of the massive fuel tanks.
Since 1990, the Clean Air Act has required the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), which is charged with investigating chemical fires and other accidents, to determine and disclose air pollutants accidentally emitted by any industry within its jurisdiction. But the CSB never implemented this mandate until PEER and community groups obtained a court order earlier this year directing the adoption of this regulation by February 4, 2020.

Buffalo County (WQOW) ‰?? A hazmat team was called in after a truck hauling acid and chlorine caught fire Tuesday in the Town of Alma.
Buffalo County Sheriff Michael Schmidtknecht said it happened around 1:42 p.m. on County Highway S near Richard Dierauer Road.
The truck belonged to Bob‰??s Surge of Arcadia. The driver told investigators he first noticed smoke in the engine compartment. When he went to inspect the engine, he saw flames inside. He told investigators that he attempted to put it out with a small fire extinguisher, but the fire was too large so he called 911.
Sheriff Schmidtknecht said when deputies arrived on the scene, the truck was engulfed in flames. Officials learned the truck was hauling 75 gallons of acid and 75 gallons of chlorine. Several fire departments were able to work together to contain the blaze before any barrels caught on fire.
The La Crosse County Hazmat team was called in to assist in the case. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The dramatic fire at the NuStar tank farm Tuesday prompted a Contra Costa County supervisor to call for more rigorous oversight of at least six petrochemical facilities that he says are currently exempted from his county‰??s more rigorous regulation under the industrial safety ordinance governing oil refineries and chemical plants.
The fire at the facility in Crockett near the Phillips refinery in Rodeo destroyed two ethanol storage tanks and led to the prolonged shutdown of Interstate 80 and shelter-in-place warnings. The fire was smaller, but similar to what happened in March, when, for several days, fire ravaged 11 petrochemical tanks in Deer Park, Texas.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An old, degraded piece of metal pipe that had not been tested for corrosion led to the June fire and explosions at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions oil refinery, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board said on Wednesday.

The pipe fitting gave way around 4:00 a.m. ET (0800 GMT) on June 21, releasing propane containing more than 3,200 pounds of highly toxic chemical hydrofluoric acid (HF) that escaped into the atmosphere, the CSB said in its first update on its investigation.
Three separate explosions then hurled pieces of the refinery across the nearby Schuylkill River and onto highways, causing a blaze that was visible for miles and destroying an alkylation unit that uses HF to produce components of high-octane gasoline.
No one was killed, and only five minor injuries were reported. However, Philadelphia Energy Solutions filed for bankruptcy a month later and shut down the 335,000 barrel-per day refinery, the largest on the U.S. East Coast.

FDNY fire inspectors averted a potentially lethal post-season blast near Citi Field, removing some 4,000 flammable gas tanks from a Queens welding company just two minutes away from the Mets‰?? home field.
The FDNY descended on the T & T Supply Co. on Willets Point Blvd. in Flushing after an Oct. 9 inspection by the Bureau of Fire Prevention Salvage Yard Task Force uncovered the plethora of tanks, most used to hold propane or acetylene, authorities said.

The business was immediately shuttered as the owners of the company were ordered to hire outside contractors for removal of row after row of the dangerous canisters.

Firefighters have been called to a toxic chemical spill at a industrial site in south Auckland on Wednesday night.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesman told Stuff emergency services were alerted to the spill at the Verissimo Drive about 9pm.
He described the substance as a toxic, corrosive chemical, however it was not clear exactly what it was.
At least 100 litres of the liquid had spilled, the spokesman added.
Seven fire crews, including two specialist hazmat units, had been called to the Mangere property.

bus passenger in Lodi had to hospitalized after she sat on what responders said was drain cleaner.
The 69-year-old New York woman boarded the 164 bus near the corner of Essex Street and Maywood Avenue around 2:20 p.m. Sunday, sat down and immediately notified the driver of an injury, authorities said.
Apparently ‰??some type of liquid‰?? on the seat ‰??was causing a reaction on her leg,‰?? NJ Transit‰??s Jim Smith said.
A Bergen County Hazardous Materials unit determined that the substance was drain cleaner, responders said.

Attorneys on Tuesday petitioned a judge to lift an order halting progress of more than a dozen lawsuits against Santa Clara Waste Water Co. over a 2014 explosion at its facility near Santa Paula.
Now that the criminal case stemming from the incident is nearly closed, plaintiffs seeking to recover costs and damages want their day in court.
The Nov. 18, 2014, blast at the plant on Mission Rock Road injured dozens of first responders and employees. It also affected county entities, local businesses and insurance companies and resulted in numerous civil lawsuits being filed in the years after the incident.

CROCKET, Calif. - At least two storage tanks are burning at a NuStar Energy facility in northern California Tuesday afternoon, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
NBC Bay Area reports that the fire has sent a large plume of black smoke into the air that can be seen for miles. It has also spread to nearby brush, according to Cal Fire. About five acres of brush have burned.
People in the area reported an explosion before the fire began, but investigators have not confirmed the cause at this moment.
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded in the area last night, although it's unclear if or how the fire is related to that.
